He was fairly close with his grandmother Adrienne, who he was named after, and so kept a similar name to hers when he came out. His nickname of Hank comes from his late friend James Carson--Jimmy thought that Adrian was a bit of a mouthful and most soldiers have nicknames anyways, and so he asked Hank his middle name. He said Henry, Jimmy said there were already a dozen Henrys and nicknamed him Hank. He liked it and so it stuck.

One translation of Schriver is "one who writes", which is fitting given the story.

Badly injured his left arm during the War. He can move it and can move his fingers, but it's very stiff and painful to. He takes painkillers to ease it. When we're first introduced to him, Hank is newly out of a sling and still uses it on rough days.

Hank is of an average height and has a lean build--he was once more muscular, but any muscle mass he put on while in the army is gone after months of hospitalization.

Hank's voice is nothing notable--it's fairly light and a medium pitch.

• He struggles to move his left arm due to injuries sustained in the War, and it has heavy scarring. On worse days, he wears a sling.


• His left side, abdomen, thigh, and lower leg have some light scarring from shrapnel from the same injury that nearly cost him his arm.


• He has mild scarring on his chest from top surgery, as well as scarring on the side of his thigh, where the doctors got the skin to use for bottom surgery. All of the scarring is fairly minor, especially compared to that on his arm.


• Slightly more prominent scarring on his chest from the same blast that injured his arm--some of the shrapnel cut into his chest, but not as deeply.

Hank is someone who feels displaced in the world. He fought in the Choran War, but was wounded in action and sustained permanent damage to his arm. He's initially a bit standoffish and judgemental, holding everyone to impossible standards, and attempts to push away people he desires to be close to, something that only makes him feel more alone. He desperately wants to feel appreciated and wanted, but is scared of losing people again. He struggles a lot with feelings of jealousy. He's a cynical optimist who tends to romanticize the people he likes and villainize the ones he doesn't, but is generally good-natured and will help people just for the sake of it. He's someone who seeks belonging but has no idea of where to begin and fears rejection. Despite priding himself on being a good observer, Hank tends to be a bit oblivious to the realities of the lives of those around him and lets his perceptions of them cloud reality. An unreliable narrator, as seen with his insistence that James Carson died when his parachute didn't work when in reality he died in the same gory explosion that damaged Hank's arm.

• He's had to completely change his mannerisms due to his arm injury--he no longer uses his left arm to gesture or anything, instead relying on his right or not doing so at all.


• His resting expression is bright-eyes and close-mouthed, and sort of gives the impression that he's a bit of a golden retriever type--enthusiastic, but not the brightest, which is not fully accurate.

The story is about Hank's journey to find his talent. At risk of sounding cruel, he's a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none type.

To find his place in a world that seems like it's completely shifted.

Writing, occasional poetry.

Self-doubting, holds himself (and others) to an impossibly high standard, judges everyone harshly, unless he likes them. Very frightened about the future, but refuses to admit it. Postures that he doesn't need anyone or anything, but is desperately lonely. Jealous. Prides himself on being a good observer, but is actually very short-sighted and self-centered, often judging people based on his biased opinions of them.

Hank was born on Ondalay and he had a decent early life; his family was never in poverty, but they also weren't particularly wealthy. The Choran War began when he was 16 and he escaped being drafted at age 18 because his records still listed him as a Yelan citizen. When he was 19 he had them updated to confirm that he was a citizen of Ondalay, and enlisted. He spent a year in training before being shipped out to fight in the thick of it on Chora, jumping in via parachute. Unfortunately for him, he was badly injured in his third battle and sent undercover to Chiri to recover. He spent months trying to regain the use of his arm, and though the injury did heal, it left him unable to rejoin. His healing coincided with the Great Truce, which ended the war, and he traveled to Wols to try and find his place in the galaxy.

Fairly decent.
