Melissa shrugged a little, pulling her hair back into a loose bun. "Guess so." She replied just as plainly, coming up to the bed. "Can I do anything, for you?"
Melissa shrugged a little, pulling her hair back into a loose bun. "Guess so." She replied just as plainly, coming up to the bed. "Can I do anything, for you?"
"No, I'm fine, but are you?" Lucas asked, clearly still not convinced. "I don't want you being upset over anything."
"I'm fine," Melissa replied, giving him a little smile. "Just a little bugged. But I'll be fine in a couple minutes."
"What're you bugged about, Mel? You know you can tell me anything, right?" He asked softly as he looked up at her.
"It's really nothing, Lu. Just school stuff, you don't need to worry." Melissa insisted in a soft tone. "I know I can tell you, but it's really nothing."
"Please, Mel… anything at all that's upsetting you is something that's important to me, Mel. I wanna know."
"Lucas, really, everything's fine." Melissa stressed further, sitting on the cot. "I had a rough day, and it's bothering me. End of story."
"Were they bothering you again?" He asked softly. "It's really important to me, Mel. I love you and I want you to be happy."
Melissa sighed weakly, pushing back so she was leaning up against the wall. "A little, but it's really fine. I'll get over it."
Lucas sighed softly. "Mel, we gotta tell your dad or something… he can… he can call the school and do something about it, right?"
Melissa sat up a little straighter, violently shaking her head. "No— don't tell him. Please don't tell him." She replied rather quickly, looking over to him.
"Melissa, please… if you don't think it's such a big deal, it shouldn't be hard to tell him, right? They were harassing you. They upset you, and I can't just be okay with that."
"Please Lucas." Melissa whispered, giving him a pleading face. "Please don't tell him. He's already doing so much, I don't want him doing another thing. I-I'll be fine… i-it's only a little-" Her voice wore down, trying not to break down into tears.
"Melissa… please. It could get so much worse if at don't do anything about it, okay? I know firsthand. We can't just ignore this and hope it goes away."
"B-but Lu…" Melissa tried to insist, holding back the tears that were threatening to run down her face. "I… I can't tell him… please, don't tell him." She was begging him, giving him a pained expression.
"Melissa…" Lucas gently brushed away Melissa's tears. "I love you. So much. I'm not going to tell him because I think that you should."
"But… but I can't." Melissa insisted, avoiding having to look at him. Her breathing was patchy as she tried to calm down, but she only caused herself to start crying more.
"Shh, shh… why can't you, Mel?" Lucas asked, pulling her into a hug. "I really think you should tell him. Your dad is great and I really think he'd care. And I sorta already told him the day that I came home from passing out at practice, so you really don't have all that much extra work to do."
Melissa buried her face in his shoulder, trying to relax so she wasn't gasping for air. "I-I… I j-just can't. H-he's already doing so… so much.." She replied weakly, her voice muffled by his shoulder. "P-please… I-I can't…"
"I know he's doing a lot, Mel, but he's your father. He loves you so much, okay? He wouldn't want this to continue happening to you. And like I said, I already told him the night I passed out at practice."
"H-how can you… you be sure?" Melissa asked weakly, her shoulders still shaking. She had grown limp in his arms, face still buried. "H-h-he seems to… to like you better."
"He doesn't like me better than you, Mel. You're his daughter. He loves you." Lucas insisted. "And I love you too."
"B-but… what- what if you're wrong?" Melissa lifted her head, her face splotchy and rather red. "W-what if… what if you find… find someone better?"
"Hey, shh, shh… I won't, Mel. I adore you, okay? You're absolutely wonderful and we've always got along so well. I love you so much."
Melissa tried to relax, but was failing. "B-but what if I mess up? What… what if I'm not good enough f-for you someday?"
"You won't, okay? Don't think about that… I love you, and that means that I don't expect you to be perfect. I love you regardless."
Melissa grew quiet, letting his words sink in. He loved her; he didn't need her to be perfect. As the seconds became minutes, she finally let out a deep breath as she pulled back. "I-I feel like an idiot…" She mumbled weakly, laughing a little.
"You're not an idiot, darling." Lucas smiled weakly. "You're just scared, and that's okay. I get scared all the time. It's nothing to be ashamed of."
"But I know all of this…" Melissa mumbled, drawing her knees up. "It's just… Eliza insisted you didn't love me, and you'd leave me. And despite your constant reassurance, I let it get to me."
"Well, fuck what Eliza thinks." Lucas huffed a bit. The drugs clearly made him have a bit less of a filter. "Since when do you trust her? I'm your boyfriend and I love you more than anyone or anything else in the world."
