Melissa gave him a soft look, Cody climbing up on his torso when he whined. "I know, babe… I'll do what I can, so you don't have to."
Melissa gave him a soft look, Cody climbing up on his torso when he whined. "I know, babe… I'll do what I can, so you don't have to."
Lucas pet Cody weakly, trying to relax. "O-Okay… I just… s-sometimes I wonder if it would be better for me, but I really don't wanna go…"
"It… it probably would be good for you. But I understand not wanting to go…" Melissa whispered, glancing up at him.
Lucas curled up on his side, still holding Cody close. "W-Why can't my brain just— f-fix itself…?" He stammered.
"Lu, honey…" Melissa whispered, giving him a worried look. She knew this never ended well for him, later on that evening.
"I-I don't want them to lock me up, please…" Lucas whispered. "I don't wanna be stuck in there, Mel…"
Melissa quickly pushed off the bed, coming up closer to him. "I know you don't, honey… I won't let them." She whispered in return, offering a hug to him.
Lucas clung tightly to Melissa, exhaling shakily. "B-But what if you can't stop them…?" He asked in a shaky whisper.
"Then I'll have my dad step in." Melissa told him softly, keeping him close as she played with his hair. "Just take a deep breath, Lu… try to relax."
"W-What if your dad can't stop them either? He's… h-he's not my legal guardian… I dunno who can make medical decisions for me…"
"Lucas, darling," Melissa whispered, kissing the top of his head. "Me and him can get this sorted out. Please, try to relax."
Lucas whimpered a bit as he trembled. "I'm s-scared… I can't… I c-can't be locked up there, Mel…"
"I know sweetheart, but please… let me handle this. Take a deep breath, and let me hold you." Melissa whispered, gently tracing circles into his back.
Lucas nodded weakly and drew in a wavering breath, trying his best to do as he was told. "I don't wanna go…"
Melissa sighed weakly, giving him a gentle squeeze. "I know… I know you don't…" She mumbled, sitting back while still holding onto him.
Lucas fell silent, just clinging tightly to Melissa for comfort. After a while, his trembling slowly faded and his breathing evened out.
Melissa continued rubbing circles into his back, not sure what else to do. She was already making huge promises, and was quite frankly worried about trying to keep.
"Mmm… I love you…" Lucas whispered. "Is your dad coming, or… or is it just you?" He asked softly.
"It's just me, to my knowledge…" Melissa mumbled, not convinced he was doing any better. "And I love you, too… so, so much."
"O-Okay…" Lucas curled in on himself a bit more with a shaky sigh. Cody cuddled up close to him, whining softly.
Melissa kept quiet for a couple minutes, before finally pipping up a little. "Is there anything I can do, to distract you? Or just in general?"
"I dunno…" Lucas sighed. "Did you bring the notes and homework?" He asked quietly, looking up at Melissa.
"I did… I even stopped by to tell your coach you wouldn't be at practice. Your team hopes you 'get better' soon." Melissa whispered, glancing over to her backpack by the door.
"Mm…" Lucas closed his eyes again and curled up in his blanket. "I dunno how long it'll be until I can play again…"
"I don't know either, but sometime remotely soon, I'm guessing." Melissa whispered, watching him curl up.
"Maybe… my arms have been pretty weak…" Lucas sighed shakily as he looked down at his bandaged forearms.
"I'm sure they'll have some kind of stretches for you to do. When your arms have healed some." Melissa told him softly, taking one of his hands.
"I guess so…" Lucas sighed, weakly gripping Melissa's hand. "I wanna play baseball now, though…"
"I know, Lu, but you're gonna get hurt." Melissa told him softly, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "You've gotten hurt enough for me to be certain that it would happen again."
"I could get hurt regardless of whether or not I'm already injured. That's kinda how sports are most of the time."
