"I'm not an idiot, Lucas. I meant you could get hurt worse." Melissa said simply, resting her head back against the wall with a sigh.
"I'm not an idiot, Lucas. I meant you could get hurt worse." Melissa said simply, resting her head back against the wall with a sigh.
Lucas sighed as well and looked away. "But what am I supposed to do, then? I… I'm the captain, they need me."
"Just because you can't play doesn't mean you can't still be captain." Melissa told him softly, still holding onto his hand. "You just have to shift things a little. Assign other players to lead different warm-ups. Things like that."
"I've been such a terrible captain all year… and it hasn't even been that long. I just keep getting injured and stuff…"
"Hey, it's not your fault." Melissa whispered weakly, looking over to him. "Some of this is even my fault."
"It's not your fault, Mel… it's my own." Lucas sighed, looking down at the cot. "You can't control my actions and… apparently neither can I."
"I worried you, though. I asked you to sit with me, and you didn't eat. And then asked you to come with me, back home with me. Causing you to be late, and over-exerting yourself in practice." Melissa mumbled, sighing softly.
Lucas sighed again and rested his head on Melissa's shoulder. "But I wanted to. I could've easily just said no, couldn't I? Just say 'sorry, I have practice and I can't be late' and have you take the bus? But I didn't, because I wanted to help you. That's not your fault."
"It feels like my fault, though. I feel like I'm the biggest reason that happened." Melissa insisted in a soft tone. "Come on, don't tell me that it wasn't even partially my fault."
Lucas shook his head. "I'm not going to blame you for my own actions, Mel. It's not your fault. You needed help, and I offered it."
Melissa went to argue further, but decided dropping the subject would be best. Sighing weakly, she dropped her shoulders before resting her head back against the wall.
"I love you, Mel…" Lucas said softly, fidgeting a bit with his hands. "You know that, right? I don't want you to forget."
"I do know that," Melissa whispered, glancing over to him. She gave a weak smile before continuing her sentence. "I never let myself forget it."
"Good…" Lucas held one hand out weakly to Melissa, wanting to try and hold her hand. "If you ever feel like you're forgetting, come get me."
Melissa took his hand, leaning over and kissing his forehead. "I'll do that— as long as you do, too." She was whispering, but assumed he could hear her… considering how close they were together.
Lucas nodded a bit and returned the kiss as best he could. "I will… do you think they'll let me leave soon?" He asked softly.
"I'm hoping so." Melissa mumbled, sliding lower on the cot to try and cuddle up next to him. "Have you tried walking, yet?"
Lucas nodded a bit. "Yeah… I'm still kinda unsteady and it hurts to walk, but I can do it." He hugged Melissa close to himself.
Melissa sighed softly, leaning into him a little. "Then you'll probably be here for longer than you want to… I'm honestly not sure."
Lucas sighed as well. "It's not that bad, really… I kinda limp a bit, sure, but it's not that bad."
"But you said it hurts to walk." Melissa pointed out, wrapping her arms around his waist. "That's serious, Lu."
Lucas shrugged a bit. "Yeah, it hurts a bit, but it's not like I'm crippled or anything." He rested his head on Melissa's shoulder.
"But you're in pain. You probably shouldn't be walking, especially if it hurts." Melissa insisted, resting her head against his. "You're healing. You should let yourself rest."
Lucas sighed. "But I don't wanna be stuck here for another night, Mel… I hate it here. I wanna go back home."
"I know, Lu. But I want you to heal." Melissa mumbled, nosing up against him. "You wouldn't be able to go to school, you'd be stuck at home all day."
"But isn't home better than a hospital? It's more comfortable there and it's less cold and Cody can run around outside…"
Melissa sighed softly, kissing the top of his head. "You're probably right. I just… I don't want anything bad to happen to you while you're there."
"Your dad will be there… I can just sit outside where he can see me or something. I could do with some fresh air anyway…"
"I… I know… I'm worrying over nothing, aren't I?" Melissa asked softly, curling her legs up closer to her chest.
Lucas shrugged a bit. "I dunno… I mean, I can't really blame you for worrying after I did this…" He sighed.
