Unicorn

Description - How would you describe Unicorn's people?

A Unicorn is a mythical horse-like beast, with a single large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. They can perform magic via a Purity System and shapeshift into a Human form. A Unicorn can be born from other Unicorns or turned from a Human.

Human Appearance

Unicorns appear to be normal Humans when in their Human form, and can run the gamut of normal Human appearances just like humans do. They will also have a mark in the middle of their foreheads that glows when they cast magic in Human form. This marking is invisible except to other Unicorns, or if the Unicorn has revealed their nature to someone. The design of the mark is Player Choice.

Identifying Markings

This forehead mark lines up exactly with the location of a Unicorn's long, pointed, spiraled horn while in their Pure Form. Both the marking and the horn itself is called the Alicorn. It is also the name of the substance the horn is made from.

All of a Unicorn's magic resides in the alicorn. This is what allows them to cast their magic. If the Unicorn is cut off from their alicorn, or their alicorn is removed from their Pure Form, they will wither away and die. The Unicorn can lose the pointed tip of their alicorn and still be fine, but if the alicorn is shattered or broken further, that is also considered cut off from their alicorn and they will die.

Should a Unicorn die, whether by choice, accident, or other unforeseen events, their body disintegrates and the alicorn is all that is left behind.

Other Forms

All Unicorns have two forms, their Human Form, to walk among others not of their kind, and their Pure Form, which takes the form of a horse with a spiraled horn. They can transform between these two forms at will using their magic. These forms are permanent and the ones the Unicorn will have all their lives.

Other Form Details

A Unicorn's Pure Form appears at first glance to be a normal horse, and can physically be any horse breed that existed at the time of the Unicorn's birth (no extinct species). They can't have any extra or additional features outside of their alicorn. So no wings, human hair instead of a horse mane, etc. Physically their bodies are normal horses with an alicorn.

However, the Pure Form's appearance is otherwise left to Player design. The coat of a Unicorn can be in a range of colours, spanning from any and all colorations of any existing horse breeds, through dark brown, jet-black, mahogany red, ocean blue, moonlight silver, dazzling gold, and the commonly seen pure white, through any mixing and matching of those colors.

Any and all patterns or coat markings are available, and Unicorns are also free to wear decorations on their hooves, manes, tails, or general coats that can come and go as they change forms, such as bells, flowers, vines, ribbons, and anything else you can think of. And although they don't need horseshoes, you are free to have them and decorate them as well.

Health & Healing

Unicorns have no rapid healing abilities and have the same constitution as Humans or Mages. However, it is impossible to poison a Unicorn; their alicorns naturally allow them to filter all impurities, whether by air, water, or food, and they can use their magic to filter for others.

Communication

A Unicorn can communicate with others while in their Pure form. To other Unicorns, Phoenixes, Dragons, Shifters, and Selkies, they can speak and be understood as normal speech. For everyone else, Unicorns can communicate via a one-way telepathy. They can only project their thoughts out, they can't take thoughts in or read minds. They do not have access to this while in their Human form.

Species Traits

Unicorn blood, especially harvested from the Pure Form, is considered an extremely potent magical item and ingredient. It has a long shelf life and is full of magic remnants. It can be difficult to obtain unicorn blood since Unicorns are considered rare, so when it becomes available it can fetch high prices and often magic users fight to get their hands on it.

A Unicorn's alicorn is also considered a potent magical item on its own, and continues to retain magical properties even after being removed from the Unicorn. It can be broken into pieces, carved up, ground into powder, and still retain its magic and potency.

grade Magic System
Branch of Magic

Unicorns are not bound to a strict magic type. Players are free to use any types of magic they wish as long as they adhere to the established site lore outlined here.

There are some restrictions on the ways magic can be performed.

A Unicorn's magic is restricted to casting. So they can't make potions, charms, enchanted items, or tomes; use anything that requires a focus (such as a wand or staff); or make use of items or ingredients that may be needed to complete a ritual or spell.

Unicorns perform magic by casting their spells through their alicorn as their focus. They can still use speech and hand movements as a supplement, but all magic goes through the alicorn and they are unable to cast without it.

For Unicorns, all magic is divided into three branches:

  • White Magic, which is considered 'Pure' and named for its white color when performed.

  • Black Magic, which is considered 'Impure' and named for its black color when performed.

  • Grey Magic, which is considered 'Neutral' and named for its grey color when performed.

What makes the casted magic fall into one of these three branches is wholly dependent on the Unicorn, and is therefore Player Choice.

For example, it is entirely possible for one Unicorn to view a healing spell as white magic and therefore 'pure', while another Unicorn views it as black magic and therefore 'impure', and for their alicorns to gain different colors as a result when casting the exact same spell.

Basic Magic Information

Unicorns have a strict magic system that they must adhere to called the Purity System. This system, in combination with the branches of magic outlined above, is what allows Unicorns to perform their unlimited magic types.

Alicorns will change and shift color as magic is cast according to the three branches. White magic adds white to the alicorn, black magic adds black, and grey magic adds grey. What this looks like on the alicorn is Player Choice.

The power and strength of a Unicorn's magic is determined by their purity as it falls within this system. This is reflected not in the coat, but in the alicorn. Rank and respect among Unicorns is determined by how pure-colored the alicorn is.

Pure White Alicorns are the strongest and most powerful, and they can perform the strongest magic. It is also the hardest color to maintain in purity and therefore considered the highest rank.

Pure Black Alicorns are the most impure, and their strength and power must be maintained by continuing to cast black magic. But when in its purest form, can easily rival (and in some cases surpass) the power and strength of a pure white alicorn.

Grey Colored Alicorns are the most common among Unicorns. These are like run of the mill average people, and most often their alicorns will be peppered in black and white. It is rare but not unheard of for Pure Grey alicorns to exist outside childhood, and those who have them are considered top tier of the mid rank.

It's important to note that there are no inherent morals attached to this system. Meaning, Players have full free reign to determine where their Unicorn falls in the Purity System and how they are viewed by other Unicorns and Unicorn society.

Magic Abilities

Species Disguise

In the supernatural underground, Unicorns are often considered just as rare and mythical as they appeared in Human legends. It is long believed their species has been in decline for centuries, and that they are on the verge of extinction.

This is, quite simply, not true. Unicorns are no less populous than any other supernatural species. They can be found all over the world just like everything else. So why are they considered so rare?

This is because of an ability given to Unicorns through their magic that no other species naturally possesses: to all creatures on earth, Human, Supernatural, or created by magic, a Unicorn will appear to be either an ordinary Human, or the same species as whoever sees them.

This is a passive ability that all Unicorns automatically have, and is also unbreakable by any means. Their magic and scent signatures are devoid of anything that would indicate they are a Unicorn. Only another Unicorn will ever know a fellow Unicorn on sight.

However, a Unicorn can choose to reveal their nature to someone else. Once that happens, the chosen person (or people) can sense the magic and scent signatures of that particular Unicorn like any other creature.

Once the Unicorn has revealed themselves, they can't take it back. It also only applies to that Unicorn and not the rest of the species.

How a Unicorn reveals their true nature to others is Player Choice. Whether or not the Unicorn appears Human or the same species (so whether or not they can cast magic in front of the other person) is also Player Choice.

The only exception to a Unicorn's passive ability is if the Unicorn is bound to another supernatural creature through a magical process, such as a Mage's Familiar, Vampire's Thrall, Selkie's Besotting, Shifter's Soul Bond, or any other such bonding. If the Unicorn has not yet revealed themselves to the creature bonding them, they will be forcibly revealed at that point.

On Bonding

Unicorns, when bonded through magical means, such as a Mage's Familiar, Vampire's Thrall, Selkie's Besotting, Shifter's Soul Bond, or any other such bonding, are highly prized in the supernatural underground due to the immense benefits given to their bonder. A Unicorn's magic and the Purity System gives anyone that manages to bond them a huge boost, depending on the bond, more so than any other species.

For Vampires, Unicorn blood is highly beneficial, both in providing a boost to the Vampire's natural abilities and in healing injuries. However, it is powerful and potent enough to almost be like a drug, the way Vampire blood is to Humans. Though it does not sustain them (as with all supernatural blood), a Unicorn's blood tastes so good and can be so addicting it is possible for Vampires to starve to death by feeding exclusively on Unicorn blood.

date_range Age & Development
Lifespan

Unicorns are a functionally immortal species. Unlike other immortals, once they are born or turned, a Unicorn can technically live on forever thanks to the nature of their magic and the Purity System. They are not forever frozen at a certain age or forced to be reborn to continue living.

We allow Unicorns up to 6,000 years old on FMRP.

Age Details

Physically, in their Human form, Unicorns age at the same rate as Humans until they are in their early twenties. At that point, their physical age begins to slow. Once they have reached their fifties, it slows to the point it appears frozen; although they are still aging, it is imperceptible to a Human's eye.

Unicorns will then be able to use their magic and the Purity System to control their appearance when it comes to aging. They can appear older or younger using their magic. This does not change their physical age or their actual physical appearance outside of how old they look. But this is done in order to hide their true nature from someone who doesn't know they're a Unicorn.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, a Unicorn can continue to live this way forever. However, although they can't die, they do continue to age, and there does come a limit: once the Unicorn reaches 3,000 years old, they have reached the pinnacle of strength and power in magic. At that point, it levels out and remains the same from then on. Any Unicorn that reaches that age is considered an Ancient among their kind.

Magic Access

Unicorns have the ability to change between their Human form and their Pure form from birth or from the moment of their turning. Born Unicorns have access to Grey Magic exclusively until 13, and then will have full access to the magic branches and the Purity System.

If they are older than 13 when turned, they have full access to the magic branches and the Purity System, but will often struggle with power and control, and the length of time it can take to settle varies from Unicorn to Unicorn.

Development

All born Unicorns are born with Pure Grey alicorns. Their magic by default is always cast as Grey Magic until they reach 13 years old. At that point, the Purity System kicks in and white and black begin to appear as magic is cast.

Turned Unicorns will either start with a Pure Grey alicorn and quickly begin to shift as magic is cast, or will begin with a color-shifted alicorn based on where they would fall in the Purity System at the time of their turning. Which one your turned Unicorn will have is Player Choice.

Regardless of the strength, power, or skill of the Unicorn in question, no Unicorn is considered to be a master of their magic until they can have and maintain a pure-colored alicorn.

Turning a Human

Humans can be turned into Unicorns through a process known as an Alicorn Ritual. The turning process for this ritual is immediate.

If a Human is pierced by the tip of an alicorn enough to draw blood, or otherwise hold or touch an alicorn with an open wound, the magic within the alicorn will immediately seize hold and transform the Human into their pure form. When they return to their Human form, they will now have an alicorn marking on their foreheads.

The alicorn does not have to be from a live Unicorn. Items that have been made from alicorns can also work in transforming the Human, as long as blood has been drawn. If not attached to a living Unicorn, the alicorn or alicorn-infused item is used up in the turning and disappears.

Turning Everything Else

Unicorns can only be created by being born a Unicorn or turned from a Human. Once someone is born or turned a Unicorn, they will always be a Unicorn. There is no way to become a Human or a different Supernatural creature.

groups Culture
Children

Unicorns can have children with the following species besides themselves:

The child of a Unicorn and another species will always be the species of one of the parents.

Example: The child of a Unicorn and a Dryad will either be a Dryad or a Unicorn. There is no such thing as a 'hybrid' species.

Other Species Relations

Unicorns can tell other supernatural species apart through their magic signatures. They have a very strong ability to determine what another supernatural is, that can be powerful enough to see through wards and other hiding spells, depending on the strength of the Unicorn and their magic on the Purity System.

Unicorns will always know another Unicorn on sight; the passive ability does not work on other Unicorns. Unicorns can still attempt to hide their magic signature from other Unicorns using other magical means.
