“Eve. don't lie to me “

Eve sighed and shook her head. “I don’t know how to relate to my mom anymore.”

“ I'm sorry.. “She said softly

“We’re both mind fairies. I feel like it should be easy. But it’s not.”

“Maybe that's your problem, you both try to read each other and you cancel each other out.”

Eve frowned in thought. “Maybe you’re right,” she mumbled. “But how do I… not do that?”

“I'm not sure..”

“You can stop trying to please me.”

Eve stopped short, her eyes wide. “Mom!”

Farah took a deep breath. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. But my dear, you always are trying to figure out what it is that I want from you. I don’t want anything from you. I love you as you are.”

Anya gave a soft smile “hai mom,”

Farah smiled warmly. “Hi, Anya.”

“Sooo, bonding. How is it?”

Farah laughed. “It takes time,” she replied simply. “Did the two of you get close overnight?”

Eve glanced at Anya and smiled shyly. “I guess not,” she agreed.

“I mean- we kinda did, buuuuuuuttt alcohol helps the process”

Eve effectively elbowed Anya in the ribs while Farah arched an eyebrow. “Alcohol?”

“Ah! Nothing I mean dome nice lemonade! I promise. “She giggled before elbowing eve back, “either way, at least you have a mom eve..”

Farah rolled her eyes at the girls' elbowing. "Please. At the Specialist party, correct? You really think I don't know about that?"

Eve stilled quickly at Anya's last words. "What?" she asked quietly. "You do too, you know." She inclined her head toward Farah.

“Yeah, but Farah hasn't always been there..”

Eve blinked quickly. "But she is now."

"Yes, I'm standing right here and can hear every word you're saying about me," Farah remarked dryly.

“Sorry, just a bit envy.” she said and gave a soft smile

Eve pursed her lips slightly, confused. “Envious? Why?”

“Just, you've had a mom your whole life, and you have a bond! And… I don't even know who my mom is..”

Eve's eyes flooded with sympathy. "Oh, Anya," she whispered, pulling the girl into her arms for a tight hug.

Farah approached them and gently set a hand on Anya's back. "I'm sure you'll figure out who she is. These things have a way of working themselves out. Believe me."

“But what if she doesn't want me? “ anys whispered

"Then I'm here," Farah answered easily, as if it were the simplest thing in the world.

“But it's gonna hurt, knowing she doesn't want her own child.. And I don't even know what I did wrong to be left on someones doorstep..”
