Melissa gave him a smile in return, before slowly letting it drop. "Wait- what do you mean? Do… do you not believe me?" She asked confused, sitting up in her seat.
Melissa gave him a smile in return, before slowly letting it drop. "Wait- what do you mean? Do… do you not believe me?" She asked confused, sitting up in her seat.
Lucas shrugged. "I mean, I dunno… why would I?" He asked quietly. "What have I done to deserve happiness?"
"Lu-" Melissa whispered softly, getting up from her seat before kneeling down next to him. "Come on, don't talk like that. If I deserve to be happy, why shouldn't you?"
"W-Well, I just… he wouldn't… if I deserved to be happy… w-why would he…?" Lucas stammered nervously, trying to find his words. "Why… why would my dad do all the stuff he did to me… and say all the things I did… if deep down, I didn't deserve it…?"
Melissa felt her face drop a little, looking up to him as he spoke. "Lucas, honey… please…" She whispered as she reached up to tip his chin up. "I suck with words, but I promise you, you deserve it."
Lucas looked up at Melissa weakly. "How do you know? Why would anyone do what he did to someone who doesn't deserve it? Clearly I did something wrong…"
“Lucas,” Melissa whispered, running her thumb over his cheek. “You haven’t done anything wrong, honey. Like you’ve told me, you reminded him of your mother and brother. It was painful to see. It’s no excuse, but it’s the truth. From what I remember of your mom, she was just like you. She was loving and kind. And Claus- you look so much like him. It’s like he was walking around the house, despite not being there. You haven’t done anything wrong, Lucas.”
Lucas sighed shakily and looked away, fidgeting with his hands. "I just… I can't feel like there's something I could've done to be better… like get rid of the alcohol or something. I think he'd have killed me, though…"
“Honey, you tried to prevent him from buying more. You tried to hide your money, but he managed to find it. It’s not your fault.” Melissa insisted, bringing her other hand up to hold his face. “You did everything you could that wouldn’t get you killed.”
"I guess so…" Lucas closed his eyes and leaned into Melissa's hand. "I shouldn't have been such a coward… I should've just called the police…" He sighed. "He just… he would know, somehow. I think he had something on my phone…"
“That doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. Lucas, it’s in the past. You can’t change it.” Melissa insisted one a soft tone, gently running her thumb over his cheek.
"What if he breaks out of prison and comes to kill me?" Lucas asked weakly. "He… he knows you… he'll know I'm here…" He whispered. "And I'm sure he's furious with me…"
“I won’t let him touch you, much less kill you. I promise you, I won’t let him get to you. You’ll be safe with me.” Melissa whispered, sitting up enough to kiss his forehead. “You’re safe here.”
Lucas buried his face in Melissa's shoulder. "I don't… I-I don't want you to get hurt for my sake though, Mel…" He whispered shakily.
“I know, Lucas. But I want you to be safe. You’re too important to me, to let you go through that all again.” Melissa continued to whisper, pulling him into a loose hug. “I want to protect you. If that means I get hurt in the process, then so be it. I can’t let him hurt you again.”
Lucas shook his head a bit. "Mel, I… I can't just let you get yourself hurt… please…" He whispered, holding tighter to Melissa. "He could kill you, Mel… I c-can't let that happen…"
“And I can’t let him kill you. This is something I’m not letting you change my mind on. I want to protect you.” Melissa whispered, rubbing circles into his back. “If you have the ability, you can call the police. He would either run away a coward, or be imprisoned for higher charges.”
Lucas held tighter to Melissa. "Please, Mel… he's dangerous… you know what he's done to me. I really don't want him to hurt you. You don't deserve it."
“Neither do you.” Melissa whispered, pulling back a little to tip his chin up. “Come on Lucas, trust me. I know how badly he’s hurt you, that’s why I’m so insistent I protect you. I can’t let it happen again.”
"B-But Melissa…" Lucas whispered weakly as Melissa forced him to look up at her. "Please… don't do this."
Melissa’s face grew soft, and she sighed softly. “I… alright, alright fine.” She lied in a soft tone, starting to pull back. “I won’t.”
Lucas nodded shakily and buried his face in Melissa's shoulder again, trembling lightly. "I don't know what I'd do if something happened to you, Mel…"
Melissa sighed softly, holding him close to herself. "I'm not sure, Lu… do- do you wanna go inside?" Melissa asked softly as she rubbed circles into his back.
"In a minute…" Lucas sighed and drew in a wavering breath. After a minute or two of slow, controlled breathing, he pulled away and dragged himself to his feet. "Alright, let's go…"
Melissa gave Lucas a soft look, stacking Cody's bowls before picking up the puppy with her other hand. "You gonna be alright?" She asked softly, starting to make her way to the door.
Lucas nodded and pet Cody before heading inside. "We should probably have dinner now, yeah?" He asked softly.
"Probably… but if you're not up to eat anything, we can wait." Melissa replied in the same soft tone as him. She set Cody down on the floor when they were inside, watching him run up to Lucas.
"I'm up for it…" Lucas picked up Cody and held him close, burying his face in the puppy's fur for a couple seconds.
Melissa smiled softly, setting the empty bowls in the sink. "Alright, why don't you two go sit down in the other room. I can bring you food in just a minute."
"Are you sure, Mel? I'm happy to help you." Lucas replied, looking up as he gently scratched behind Cody's ears.
