Nina saw the growling dog, and the obviously-not-terrified reactions of the others, and nearly lost her nerve. She knew there was no way she'd be able to actually hurt any of them. But she was still hungry, and wasn't sure if they would really help her.
"I don't care what you give me. W-whatever you can spare is fine." She took a step back and lowered her knife, but only slightly. "I'll–I'll leave you alone after that. I don't want any trouble." She hoped her fear and exhaustion weren't totally obvious.
Jess sighed and stepped toward her after grabbing a can of some sort of beef soup out of his bag. He rolled it over to her and waited for her to drop the knife. She was still dangerous.
"No. Please stay. We wanna help you the best we can. And its safer to stick in groups around here anyway. Just…dont stab me" he smiled
Nina picked up the can and held it close. She stared at Jess for a minute longer, her strength wavering, then slumped with relief. "I could never. It—it was just a bluff." She laughed weakly, sitting down at the top of the stairs so she could figure out how to open the can. "I'm sorry I threatened you…..I don't know what came over me. Honestly, I'd rather not be alone either." It didn't really occur to her that the strangers might not be safe. At the first sign of friendliness from them, she trusted them immediately. "I'm Nina Drafter, by the way. Who are you guys?"
He waved shyly at the new girl. "N-nikko..are y-you hurt a-anywhere?"
"Hi Nikko," Nina said, returning the smile as she finally pried open the can. "Hurt? Oh…..no, I'm fine, just hungry. But thank-you." Digging through her backpack, she found a metal spoon and started devouring the cold soup as if it was the best thing she'd ever tasted. "I'm glad I didn't actually attack any of you. You seem like very nice people. Actually, you're the first humans I've seen in a long time. Are you new in town?"
Mocha fell silent as Serenity gave her a pat on the head. "I got here this morning." Serenity said. "I got caught by a Screamer and almost died, but lucky me these two showed up." She gestured to Jess and Niko with a smile. "You're the first humans I've seen for a while, too." The last time she had seen a person had been a few months ago, and that person had died saving her life. "I'm Serenity, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Serenity," Nina said, trying not to talk with her mouth full and look like an absolute slob. "I love your dog, she's so cute. I'm glad you're okay—those screamers are horrible." It was a miracle she herself hadn't encountered any screamers lately. If she had, she would have been too weak to survive. "Is the screamer that attacked you still around, then? Or….?"
"No, its not. We killed it. We searched the rest of the building too. Its clean. So we've decided to camp here for a good bit. It seems pretty safe." Jess shrugged
Nina looked relieved. "Good." She hoped they wouldn't ask if she was good at fighting screamers herself. She was terrible in combat against anything, and she worried she'd be kicked out of the group because of that. "Um….I don't think I caught your name?" she added, glancing inquisitively at Jess.

if being good at killing screamers was a requirement, then nikko would be kicked out. sure he helped kill that last one but it was a suprise to even himself. plus he would much rather stick to treating people and first aid then killing. he'd had enough killing for a lifetime. he listened to everyone talk, not adding in much since he wasnt good social wize.
Serenity sat up and swung her legs over the side of the table, the pain in her side now a dull ache. "So, are you guys heading anywhere?" She asked, stretching one leg, then the other.
