Melissa could feel her breath get caught in her throat, watching anxiously as he ran. When he had slid to third she could feel herself stiffen up waiting to hear if he was safe or not.
Safe was called, and Lucas got to his feet to wait for the next person to bat. His heart was only pounding harder now, and his only focus was on the game. He couldn't think about anything else at the moment. As soon as his teammate hit the baseball, he took off running again and soon passed home.
Melissa felt a grin pull up, watching the ball zip to home plate way after Lucas had made it. Her own heart was beating pretty hard, her nerves getting to her. Despite not playing the game, she high hopes for his team to win.
The game went on like this for a while, and Lucas was exhausted by the time the end was drawing near. He was up to bat again and pushed his exhaustion back for the moment so he could focus. He hit the ball hard and took off again, this time not stopped. He couldn't hear the commentator through the blood rushing in his ears, but he'd hit a home run.
As she watched the ball fly over the fence, and heard the commentator's words she couldn't help but cheer out loud with the crowd. Her grin had managed to stay up most of the game, excitement practically bursting from the seams at this point.
Lucas was panting hard by the time he slid to home. "Home run!" He looked up as the commentator spoke, trying to catch his breath. The game ended after some cheering and the teams went to congratulate each other. Lucas was completely exhausted and honestly just wanted to go home and sleep at this point, but adrenaline was keeping him going for now.
Melissa wanted to get up, and go wrap him in a hug. But knowing she should give him some space, so he could celebrate his victory was enough to keep her in her seat. She could wait… maybe.
After everyone shook hands, Lucas took off his helmet and headed over to the fence, waving to Melissa with a tired grin. He hoped that he could stay awake long enough to shower, because he definitely needed one.
When he came up to the fence, Melissa hopped up and quickly made her way over to him. "You did such a good job, out there!" She praised him with a grin. "I'd hug you, but you're all dirty."
"Thanks, Mel." Lucas laughed weakly and kissed Melissa. "I'll hug you after I take a shower. I'm exhausted…" He looked out at the field. Most of the players were clearing out by now.
"Well, I already texted my dad to come pick us up. He said he would be here in a little bit." Melissa hummed lightly, reaching out and running her fingers through his hair. "Do you wanna grab your stuff? We can head up to the parking lot, and meet him there."
"Yeah, I'll be right back…" Lucas smiled gently and headed off into the locker rooms. Within a couple of minutes, he had returned with his bag. "Alright, I'm ready when you are."
Melissa offered him a hand, starting up to where her dad had said he would pick them up. "I'm assuming we'll want to get ice cream until tomorrow, right?" She asked him lightly, lacing their fingers together.
"Yeah… I'm way too tired today. Tomorrow is Saturday anyway, so we can go at any time." Lucas yawned and held onto Melissa's hand as he followed after her.
"Then we'll do that. Tonight, you can head straight to bed after you shower." Melissa hummed softly, leaning over to kiss his cheek. "You want me to carry your stuff? I don't mind, if you do."
"No, I'm alright. I've got it, Mel." Lucas smiled softly and kept walking with Melissa. "When is your dad going to get here?" He asked.
Melissa nodded a little, not offering again. "I texted him about ten minutes ago, so he should be here any minute." She told him with a light smile, glancing around the emptying parking lot.
Lucas nodded and sat down on the curb to wait, still breathing a bit heavier than normal. "Mm… what time is it?" He asked.
Pulling her phone out of her pocket, she smiled a little at the screensaver of both Lucas and Cody together. "It's after nine thirty. Not actually that surprisingly late."
"Mm… it feels later." Lucas sighed, running his fingers through his hair. "Especially since it's already dark out."
"Mhmm… I know I didn't just play a game, but I'm really not tired. I honestly think I can keep going for a couple of hours." Melissa hummed lightly, staying on her feet and rocking back and forth.
"Well, you're welcome to stay up as long as you want, but I'm probably going to crash after I shower." Lucas yawned a bit, humming softly to himself.
"I probably will… I'm not allowed to steal Cody, am I?" Melissa hummed lightly, standing behind him to play with his hair. "He's your puppy at bedtime, and I'm not allowed to take him from you?"
"Well, he likes sleeping with me…" Lucas leaned into Melissa's gentle touch, closing his eyes. "Mm…"
"Then it looks like I don't get a puppy tonight." Melissa smiled lightly, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "You deserve him, though."
Lucas didn't reply, nodding off a bit as he relaxed. He wasn't quite asleep yet, but he was clearly very close.
As they were waiting, Mr. Brennahan's car rolled up and he tapped on the horn just a bit. "Dad's here." Melissa said lightly, reaching down to grab his things before he could react.
Lucas jumped at the sudden noise, jolting awake. He looked around for a couple seconds before he processed what was happening and got up to get into the car.
Melissa laughed softly, stacking his things in the trunk. "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. How was the game?" Mr. Brennahan asked lightly as he turned back to see Lucas getting in the car.
"Don't worry about it." Lucas laughed quietly. "The game was good. We won by a good bit. I'm exhausted now, though… I'm gonna crash right after I shower, probably."
