Melissa went to say no, but stopped herself. She shrugged a bit instead, starring in to the empty space in her locker. "I… a little, yeah."
Melissa went to say no, but stopped herself. She shrugged a bit instead, starring in to the empty space in her locker. "I… a little, yeah."
"What did they say to you, Mel?" Lucas asked, gently turning Melissa so she was facing him. "Did they hurt you?"
"Nothing of importance. It's not that big of a deal." Melissa shrugged again, tipping her head down so she didn't have to look at him. "I'm just tired. I want to go home."
"Please, Mel. It's important to me. I want you to be safe." Lucas tilted Melissa's chin up, still looking worried.
Tears were stinging at her eyes, and she shook her head. "Not here… not right now. I'm really trying not to cry, right now." Melissa told him weakly, her voice wavering a bit.
"Shh… can we talk about it later? Please?" Lucas kissed Melissa softly. "If they hurt you, I want you to go to the nurse."
"N-no… they didn't hurt me. Not physically." Melissa responded to his last comment, just standing there numbly. "And… I-I guess… just- prepare yourself. There's a big chance I won't be able to hold myself together anymore."
Lucas nodded nervously. "Alright, Mel… will you tell your dad? Maybe he can call the school and have something done about it… I don't want this to continue."
Melissa glanced between him and the floor, fidgeting in place. "I… I really don't want to bug him with this. He's already got enough on his hands, excluding anything else between us and my mother…"
"Mel, you shouldn't hide it, though… he wouldn't want you to." Lucas sighed. "We can do something about this."
"I really don't want to bother him, though. I honestly don't even want to bother you with this." Melissa told him weakly, dropping her bag on to the floor.
"I want you to tell me about this stuff, Mel. You're not bothering me. It's important for me to keep you happy and safe."
"But I feel like I am, Lu." Melissa insisted, hearing her voice break at the end of her sentence. She couldn't look at him, keeping her eyes trained on the floor.
"You're not. I assure you, you're not. You're never bothering me with this kind of thing. I want to help you." Lucas gently kissed Melissa's forehead and pulled her into a hug.
Melissa barely wrapped her arms around him, burying her face into his shoulder. Tears ran down her cheeks as she tried to swallow down any more of them. "I- you're sure? Y-you promise?"
"I'm absolutely certain, Melissa… you know how bad of a liar I am." Lucas gently kissed the top of Melissa's head, pulling her closer.
Melissa nodded weakly, trying to stop herself from crying. Though the longer she stayed in his embrace, the harder it was to do so. "I- I don't want… want you to let go…"
"I know… I… I can probably try to take the bus home with you, if you feel more comfortable. I can be a bit late for practice… you're more important."
"N-no… no, you can't." Melissa said weakly, pulling back so he could see her tear streaked face. "Y-you've got responsibilities… you can't ditch them, on m-my account."
"You're more important to me, Melissa. If you feel safer with me going home with you, I will. There's no question about it."
"I- I… you can't, Lucas." Melissa whispered weakly, pulling back still. She really wanted him to, but in her mind it was stupid and selfish for her to want to feel safe. "J-just… just go to practice. I'll… I'll be fine."
"Melissa… if you really want me to go with you, I'm happy to. If you will feel safer with me with you, I want to go with you."
"I-I would… but I really, really want you to go to practice. I don't want you to be late…" Melissa told him softly, hiccuping a bit as she rubbed the tears away.
"It's okay. The guys will understand. We can take the public bus so it'll be faster, okay?" Lucas gently kissed Melissa again.
Melissa nodded weakly, keeping her head tilted down. "D-do you want to tell your coach?" She glanced up to him, trying to relax.
"I'll text him while we're going. It'll be fine." Lucas pulled out his phone and quickly sent a text to his coach. "The bus should be pretty quick, anyway. You don't live far away."
Melissa only nodded once more, concentrating on her breathing for a couple of minutes as they walked. When she felt more relaxed, she turned her gaze back on him. "Thank you…"
"Of course, Mel." Lucas waited at the bus stop with Melissa and got on with her when the bus arrived. "Anything for you."
Melissa barely smiled, holding on to his hand tightly. "I'm not sure how I'm going to make this up to you." She laughed softly, keeping close to him.
"You already have, not that you need to. You help me a ton during my little mental breakdown things. And I have them pretty often."
