Melissa nodded a bit, taking her free arm to hug his waist. "I honestly don't understand why your dad was so horrible to you. You've literally done nothing bad."
Melissa nodded a bit, taking her free arm to hug his waist. "I honestly don't understand why your dad was so horrible to you. You've literally done nothing bad."
Lucas smiled weakly. "I suspect it's because I remind him of them. Claus and my mother. I survived when they didn't, and he blames me for it. He also thinks I'm weak because I don't fight back. I don't want to hurt him."
"But… but he hurt you?" Melissa said softly, looking up at him. "You never even tried to fight back? You didn't try to protect yourself?"
"Well, I tried my best not to get killed. I'd shield myself with my arms and stuff, but I never hurt him. I don't want to be like him. I don't want to hurt anyone."
Nodding a little, Melissa grew quieter. "I know you don't… it was stupid of me to say anything about it. I know you wouldn't."
Lucas smiled weakly. "It's not your fault, Mel. I'm alright. He just… didn't want any reminder of them around."
Melissa glanced away from his face, nodding a little. "I understand that. Though it doesn't excuse the fact he was hurting you." She said, seemingly trying to end the conversation. She didn't want to sink his mood, anymore than she probably had already.
"I know, love. I know it doesn't…" Lucas kissed Melissa softly, still leading her to the park.
Resting her head back against him, she let out a soft sigh. "I love you…" Melissa added on in a whispered tone.
"I love you too, Mel." Lucas kept his arm around Melissa and looked up. "We're close to the park now."
Glancing up at him, she felt a gentle smile pull up. "Race you the rest of the way?" Melissa asked, glancing down at her flats.
"Sure, Mel." Lucas grinned and broke into a run, letting go of Melissa's hand so he wouldn't hurt her.
"Hey!" Melissa shouted after him, starting to run behind him. She had a smile up, and laughed lightly as she sprinted along.
"Where are we running to?" He called back, keeping up the pace he was going at.
"I'll tell you when I get there!" Melissa called out, still smiling brightly. "Or we can go to the clearing."
"We'll just go to the clearing. Then I know where we're going." Lucas kept running, easily clearing a log that was in their path once they got into the forest.
Melissa had to slow her running when she got there, so she wouldn't trip. Though she kept a decent pace. "I need to learn, you can't challenge a baseball player to a race."
Lucas grinned, clearly pleased with himself. "It's alright, Mel. You're better than me at like, everything else."
Rolling her eyes a bit, she stumbled a little before catching herself. "Am not. You just don't like talking about your talents." Melissa called out after him, giving up trying to beat him there.
"I really don't have as many as you seem to think. I'm a pretty average person when it comes to skills." Lucas stopped running when he reached the clearing, panting lightly.
Jogging the rest of the way, she came up to his side and rested her empty hand on her hip. "Do you really want me to get into this?"
Lucas looked over at Melissa, confused. "I'm really not that special, Melissa, but I'm glad you think so."
"I swear, I want to start listing off everything you're good at. But you'll get flustered, and be upset with me." Melissa huffed, pouting a little.
Lucas sighed softly and kissed Melissa. "Other than baseball and drawing, what am I really that good at?"
"I've heard you sing. You're quite an excellent one." Melissa replied rather quickly, kissing him back. "And you're a pretty decent kisser." She added on with a little smirk.
Lucas flushed a bit and looked away. "There's no way I'm a good kisser… I just started like, a month ago."
"Mm, why do you think I always want to kiss you?" Melissa asked softly, setting the box in her hand aside so she could wrap her arms around him.
Lucas flushed harder and hid his red face in Melissa's shoulder. "I-I… um… I think you're a good kisser as well…" He said softly.
Melissa smiled, resting her head against his. "Mm, I'm glad I got to share my first kiss with you."
"M-Me too…" Lucas held Melissa close and sighed, keeping his face hidden.
