Lucas laughed softly as well. "When you've experienced super intense spikes of anxiety, the constant uneasiness just starts feeling normal and tolerable."
Lucas laughed softly as well. "When you've experienced super intense spikes of anxiety, the constant uneasiness just starts feeling normal and tolerable."
"Lu… that's terrible." Melissa pouted, adjusting her position so she was sitting on her legs. Just slightly she was holding herself above him, pressing her forehead to his. "Have you ever even tried to figure out what would help you?"
Lucas shrugged. "Never really had a chance to. I mean, I think I tried a bit when I was younger, but I eventually gave up. I mean, I didn't exactly see any way out of my situation.
"Well, you are now. So you should definitely try." Melissa whispered, sinking back down into her usual position. She pulled back away from him, giving him a soft smile. "But right now, I don't really want to get up and leave."
"W-Well, being around you always helped…" Lucas blushed a bit. "Even if I didn't tell you what was going on, being around a positive influence like you definitely kept me hanging on. Just… knowing that despite everything else, there was one person who cared about me and my wellbeing."
Her own cheeks were flushed, and slowly she traced circled into the knee of her jean. "Of course I care Lucas, I always have. Probably always will." She whispered, looking down at the little space between the two of them.
Lucas nodded. "I-I… uh… thanks, Mel." He smiled weakly and looked up at her. "It means a lot, really."
Lifting her green eyes just slightly, she gave him a sweet smile to go along with her flushed face. "So… how long have you liked me? I'm wondering who's had a crush longer."
"Um… probably since I hit puberty, so… I would've been twelve or thirteen? So that would be three or four years. Well, I'm almost seventeen, so… math is dumb, but you get the point."
"I got you, that makes sense." Melissa laughed, trying to think back to when she had gotten a crush. "I think I started mine at like nine, but at ten I refused to like boys. So I denied my crush on you, but then accepted it about twelve or thirteen again." She shrugged, doing the whole thing in her head. "And it would be four or five years for you. If we round your age up."
"Yeah… I hate math." Lucas laughed a bit. "You know, Claus always made fun of me for not having a girlfriend. And I was just like, 'Claus, we're like, eight?? Why do you have a girlfriend??'. It was an… interesting time. Apparently he and Katie were dating on and off through elementary school."
“Honestly that’s disgusting. I remember her telling me they kissed once, and I got so excited.” Melissa laughed at the memory, of both girls getting all giggly over the boys. “It’s so funny how people change so much when they grow up. But somehow we’re the exact same.”
"Yeah." Lucas laughed softly. "I wasn't exactly super popular with the ladies when I was eight. Or now, really… Claus was always the outgoing, charming one. I just preferred to sit in my little corner and doodle all day. Talking to people always made me nervous, so people started thinking I was stuck up because I never wanted to talk to anybody."
“Mmm, I don’t think you’re paying good attention then.” Melissa hummed, a slight smirk on her lips. “When school starts, just take a look around you.”
Lucas seemed confused. "What do you mean?" He asked, clearly completely clueless. He legitimately didn't think that anyone would be interested in him.
“You oblivious child.” Melissa snickered, shaking her head back and forth. “Don’t tell me you’ve never seen the group of girls going Gaga over you during lunch. Or the group that follows you around during free period.”
Lucas shook his head, definitely bewildered now. "Usually you and I are together during those times. I guess I was too distracted by you to notice them. Do people really do that??"
“My goodness, yes they do. You seriously haven’t? Because that’s just sad.” Melissa hummed, reaching over to run her fingers through his hair.
Lucas flushed red, embarrassed. "W-Well, I guess I just wasn't looking for it… I didn't think anyone was interested in me."
“Well I can go down the list if you want.” She snickered, carefully brushing his hair back in her fingers. “So soft…” Melissa mumbled mindlessly.
Lucas blushed a bit harder. "Are there seriously that many people that like me…?" He asked tentatively.
“It’s a list, but not an incredibly long one. But yes, there’s at least a dozen.” Melissa hummed, giving him a soft smile. “I just don’t think you’ve paid enough attention.”
Lucas nodded and fidgeted nervously with his hands. "It… it's just kinda a weird thing to think about, you know? That people are like, staring at me and following me around without me knowing."
“It’s incredibly weird, even though you do know. It’s just… creepy. That’s why I try and stay with you whenever I can.” Melissa shrugged, giving him a soft smile.
Lucas nodded again. "I-I mean, I've noticed a group of girls walking behind us before, but I never thought anything of it. I just figured their class happened to be in the same direction as ours."
"Well, if I was still trying to hide my feelings, I wouldn't have to worry about you finding out." Melissa laughed softly, pulling back from him with a soft smile. "But hey, now I don't want to hear you saying anything about not making friends. I have a feeling more people would be your friend if you looked."
"But they wouldn't be real friends. That's the problem." Lucas sighed. "They probably just like me because of baseball. There's more to me than just baseball."
"Then show them that." Melissa shrugged, giving him a soft smile. "I could always introduce you to one of my loose friends. I'm sure they'd be happy to meet you."
Lucas nodded. "The problem with being as introverted as I am is that I would much rather have one or two close friends than try to keep up with twenty acquaintances… but I can try to be a little less standoffish."
"I get wanting to have the close friends. Though I try to have a mix, in case my friends are unavailable." She hummed, booping the tip of his nose. "Especially when one of them has games all the time."
