"Huh?" Melissa asked, snapping herself back. "O-oh yeah… that… that'd be terrible." She mumbled, trying not to start nodding off again.
"Huh?" Melissa asked, snapping herself back. "O-oh yeah… that… that'd be terrible." She mumbled, trying not to start nodding off again.
"We should probably go soon before we both fall asleep." Lucas stretched a bit and yawned again. "It's getting kinda dark."
"Is… is it?" She asked, noticing the beginning of the setting sun. "Oh, yeah I guess it is. I might just walk my bike back, it'll keep me from getting hurt if I lose myself."
"Yeah… I'll probably do the same." Lucas slid down the branch and landed in the middle of the tree. He lost his balance and very nearly fell, but managed to grab onto a stray branch and pulled himself back up.
Watching him start to get down, a sharp gasp escaped her lips when he slipped. "Lucas!" She squeaked, quickly taking a hold of his arm. "Oh my gosh are you OK!?"
"I'm fine, Mel… calm down." Lucas drew in a wavering breath, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He couldn't pretend that he hadn't at least been momentarily startled, even if he was fine now.
"I- You just fell from the tree! You could have gotten really, really hurt!" Melissa continued to breath heavily, her own heart pounding. "W-we need to be more careful, one of us is going to get hurt."
"Melissa, I'm okay… I-I didn't fall, so it's fine." Lucas pulled Melissa into a hug and sighed softly, trying to calm down the both of them.
Holding on to him tighter, she buried her face into his shoulder with a shaky breath. "You just scared me, I'm sorry." Melissa whispered, giving him a tight squeeze.
"Scared myself too, Mel." Lucas laughed weakly and rested his head against here. "But I'm fine… even if I'd actually fallen, I've gotten hurt way worse. I could handle it."
"I don't think I could've." Melissa mumbled, trying her best to relax her nerves. "I hate knowing you're hurt, so watching you get incredibly injured is excruciating." Totally dramatizing the situation, she pulled back just slightly from the hug.
"Well, I've fallen before and it hasn't been too bad… haven't broken anything, anyways. Sprained my ankle once, but nothing worse than that." Lucas shrugged.
"That does not make me feel better Lucas." She frowned, resting her chin on his shoulder once again. "If anything, it makes me feel worse."
"Why doesn't that make you feel better?" Lucas asked, confused. "A sprained ankle isn't all that bad… I mean, I was still able to walk on it."
"Because now I know it's happened. And it makes it more real that it could happen again." She whispered, loosening her hold on him. "It's not a good thing to have on my mind."
"Oh… sorry, Mel…" Lucas said softly, looking down at the ground and feeling guilty. "W-Well, I'll try my best not to fall?"
"Don't be sorry, I'm just a wuss." Melissa laughed lightly, pulling back from him fully. "Wanna head down before one of us actually does fall?"
"You're not a wuss… but yes, we should definitely head down." Lucas carefully made his way down to the ground and held up one hand to help Melissa.
Following his lead, she slowly ducked out of the tree, holding onto his hand for support. "I am too." Melissa hummed, regaining her balance on the ground. "Thank you!"
"Are not. And no problem. Let's go." Lucas led Melissa out of the forest by one hand and managed to get them back to their bikes.
Walking pass him, she glanced over her shoulder as she bent down to unhook the bikes. "How long do you think it'll take to get back, by walking?"
"Hmm… between five and ten minutes depending on how quickly we walk, I'd say." Lucas hummed, rolling his bike out of the rack.
"But that's so far~" She whined, leaning back with a groan. Of course it was all jokingly, so she wasn't actually upset about walking.
"I'm sure you'll live." Lucas patted her on the head affectionately. "I could carry you, but it would be kinda hard to move both the bikes as well."
Flushing softly at the offer, she sighed nodding. "Too bad, I guess we have to walk then." She pouted, pulling her bike from the rack as well. "Maybe next time we'll walk."
"Mhmm." Lucas started walking towards Melissa's house, rolling his bike beside him. "I'm sure we'll get there before you know it."
"Oh yeah, probably." Melissa hummed, setting her helmet on the top of her head. "We'll see though. There's no promising I'll make it."
"You'd better not pass out. That'd be kinda problematic. I know first hand." Lucas booped Melissa's nose playfully.
Giggling at the touch of his finger, she continued to lead her bike along the path. "Yeah, I guess it would be." Melissa hummed, biting into her lips once more.
"Mhmm." Lucas hummed softly to himself while they walked, seeming content for the moment. The baseball conversation had distracted him from his father for the time being, anyways.
