Jay's breathing was quick and painful. all his senses felt numb. He couldn't stand the silence.
"I… I don't know. He can't be far.. We split up to cover more ground looking for you… I asked him to shout if he needed me so perhaps nothing has happened to him." Kale hugged themselves tightly, shaking and shivering. "Are you alright to walk?"
"No. Hardly. But I can manage. At least until we find him."
"Is there a bullet in you?" Kale asked, kneeling down in front of Jordan.
Jordan watches, "Yeah. But leave it. We have to fine Jay."
Kale nodded and started moving through the trees slowly. "He can't be far."
Jordan nods but doesn't move. He sinks down against the tree trunk and sits against it. His breath had become hitched and sharp
Kale noticed that Jordan wasn't following them and turned around, contemplating what to do. "I don't think I have a choice right now, I'm sorry." They took a deep breath, lifting Jordan, bridal style, into their arms. Kale was in no fit state to be carrying anyone, but they were close to the orphanage and thought it would be best to let medics tend to Jordan. "I'll let someone take a look at you while I find Jay."
Jay sat against the tree his panic not subsiding. Usually it didn't stay this long. He still had trouble breathing, everything was still spinning.
Jordan chokes, "What?! Hey!" Hile kicks out, "I'm fine!"
"You're not fine, you have a bullet stuck in your leg and the longer it stays in there the more pain you are going to be in. It's better if I let someone help you than just leaving you to get worse." Kale's grip on him tightened as they approached the orphanage. From there they could see the police apprehending the houseparents while medics tended to the confused and upset children. Something about their presence caused Kale to freeze in place. "Are we doing the right thing?"
"You will he if you let me go!" Jordan roars, not really registering the rest
Kale gently put Jordan down on the ground and ran off without another word to him. They kept running, weaving through all the trees, hoping that they would find Jay. "Come on wise guy, where are you?"
Jay breathed quick and heavy. He was overwhelmed by the silence. His whole body was shaking. He felt like he was spinning and that he was numb all over.
Kale kept searching, soon becoming confident that they were running in circles, until spotting a figure in the distance. Kale stumbled towards the figure and realised it was Jay, although the boy was silent and shaking even when they approached him. "Jay? Are you alright?"
Jay started to hear some noice. But he couldn't tell where. Every just felt blurred to him.
"Jay what's wrong? Why aren't you saying anything?" Kale started panicking. "I shouldn't have left you, I don't know what to do."
Jay recognized the voice and tried to control his breathing. The Panic attack stopped after another moment. "Kale?" He whispered.
"Jay?" Kale paused after hearing a whisper. "Jay!"
"Kale. Hi." Jay said not knowing what to say. He felt the ground and then felt the tree behind him.
"Are you alright? You had me worried."
"I. I um had a panic attack." Jay said.
"Because you were alone?" Kale gently placed their hand on Jay's shoulder. "Do you have them often?"
"um not because I was alone. But yeah. I have them often" Jay explained.
"Why did you never tell me?" Kale grew a little concerned.
"didn't want to concern you. Usually you are sleeping when it happens also."
"I'm always concerned." Kale sighed. "You could have always tried to wake me up if you needed someone to keep you company."
"they usually go away quick enough." Jay said then stood up.
"Still… I'd appreciate it if you'd told me this…" Kale mumbled.
"sorry. Didn't want to add more for you to be concerned with." Jay joked.
