The Sylphs and the humans have been fighting since the beginning of time. The humans have wanted to get rid of them simply because they are afraid of them, and they think that they can use parts of them for science and medicine. They think that they can extract the Sylph's magic by their blood.

The time period would be in the medieval times if you were in our world.

Sylph: Nature based magic. There are four different "types" of magic - water, earth, fire, air - but it really depends on which lineage you descend from as to what type of magic you can use. And each sect can manipulate that element/create it, and each element has a couple of extras that some people get really good at.
Elves have a form of spoken magic in this world. They can't just conjure elements. Perhaps it's possible to manipulate them with spells but that different from the inate magic that the Sylphs have.

Animalia: Essentially sentient animals.

Like earths.
