Chapter 2:

The prison was in an uproar. The guards could not find the lost prisoner nor explain how he escaped and someone or something wanted answers.
When Fallyn emerged from the hallway, there was a sigh of relief from those that cared for her.
"She is safe!" Several women shouted the news down the line. "She is back!"
Reesa had opened the door to their cell, stepping out of the confines to let Fallyn in but when she saw Fallyn collapse to the floor she rushed out to her. A small group of women came out from their cells to help Reesa carry her back where Meryha stood on stand by, waiting to see if she could help heal her.
The small cuts and bruises were quickly mended but her broken arm and her head were another matter.
"I can't heal her arm. I can feel that her bone is cracked but I am not strong enough. And her head. Dear god, her head is bleeding so badly. I ..." Meryha's voice was weak and could barely be heard. She was using too much energy.
Reesa gently pushed her away from Fallyn, forcing her to stand. "It's alright. We can bandage her arm and her head to stop the bleeding." She turned to look at the women surrounding the cell. "Quick, someone bring me cloth!" Reesa barked, quickly taking charge of the women and giving orders to those that were near.
"Maybe if I rest for while, I can do some more but..." Meryha was swaying on her feet.
"That's enough, you've done great. Just rest now." One of the women lead her to a corner where she slumped down into it. Her matted white hair that was caked with grime, dirt and other things that no one spoke about stood in stark relief against the grayish black stone walls. Her once flawless dark skin was scraped bloody and patches of grime spotted her exposed flesh.
All the women looked awful, dirty and tired. They had been in these cells for months with nothing changing. They were all ready to make some escape but now that Fallyn, their unspoken leader, was hurt no one knew where to start. The best that they could do was to wait.

Days had gone by and Fallyn was still not awake. Meryha worked on her as much as her body would allow but it was draining on her and she had to rest for hours after each session. The women would take turns tending to both of them; making sure they had something to eat and drink, washed them the best they could and watched over them as they slept.

Reesa was keeping busy by listening into the guards conversations and letting other know what was happening on the surface. She overheard that someone was coming to the prison and before they arrived the guards had to find out how the prisoner escaped... by any means. She told all the women to prepare themselves for the guards to ask questions but nothing could prepare them for what the guards were willing to do for answers.

It was several days later when the guards came to interrogate the women. The guards looked as if they had been beaten and interrogated themselves. A large group of men came down to the cells at once and split off into groups with three guards going into each cell and locking themselves in with the women. The screaming that followed was deafening. They yelled questions and beat the women. For hours the assault continued but the women held their silence.
In Fallyn's cell, they did whatever they could to keep her hidden. They moved her to the corner of the room onto the floor and covered her with all the blankets they could, trying to make it look like a pile of rags.
All of the women were exhausted. Every single female had a cut, bruise or was bleeding but still they stayed strong, not saying anything.
A large guard came down to the cell rooms. When he reached the bottom step, all the beatings stopped. The guards left the small confined spaces and stood at attention outside their cells. He obviously was their leader and demanded complete obedience.
"Report!" the guard barked, crossing his arms.
"Nothing," was the low response of every guard.
The women huddled together in small groups, many trying to stop the bleeding, others comforting those that were crying. When the echo of the guards slowly faded something in the room changed. Energy began to swirl around the leader and every other guard shrank back in themselves. It was barely noticeable at first, just the air shifting in the stagnant room until the swirling intensified. The air took on an orange like color when he exploded with rage, sending out a blast of power that felled those closest to him.
"These pathetic cows know something! I want answers now!" He roared his demands to his men.
"Tai'arwein(leader), we have done everything but still they will not speak." A guard at the end of the cell block spoke up.
"They will not speak?" He walked further into the room towards the end of the room. "You say they will not speak?" He spoke calmly, even gently which set everyone; guards and prisoners, on edge. "You worthless brat!" He backhanded the guard so viciously that it sent him into the bars of the cell. "You make them talk! Bring me a prisoner."
All the guards moved into action, opening the doors and dragging a female from the confines.
"If they don't speak, you make them speak." He grabbed the closest prisoner, a young girl who had not yet seen fourteen cycles. Her large sea-green eyes wide in fear.
"Look," he turned himself in a circle, dragging the girl with him. "I want to know who went down there." He picked her up by her arm, his meaty fist squeezing it tightly so that she dangled off the ground. "I want to know who helped that man." Low murmurs from the women, begging and pleading that he let the young girl go fell on deaf ears. "I want to know..." He grabbed her by the head with his other hand and slammed her into wall. "Who!"
The young girl slumped to the ground. She was dead.
"No! No! My baby, my...No!" A small petite woman pushed her way through the guards to the fallen girl. She let out a loud shriek that had everyone covering their ears. She tried to gather the girl in her arms but the large guard kicked her in the side. Coughing and groaning, she laid onto of her unmoving daughter.
"No one has anything to say now?" His tone was gentle again and many stepped back from him. "You have to know that I do not care about you... any of you." He kicked the woman again. "I do not care if you are hungry, if you are thirsty or if you are in pain." The sound of her knee being crushed under his heavy boot was sickening, but her scream even more so. "You useless cows are dispensable."
The small woman tried to get away. Her nails scraping along the cold stone floor as she pushed herself with her one good leg. Her mangled leg dragged behind her.
"I have no need for you and I do not care if you live..." He reared back his leg and with full force kicked her in the head. "Or die." The noise of her skull being hit by his boot then bouncing off the wall resounded in the small area. Several women were sick, other weeping or trying to give comfort, and a few were standing with clench fists; anger radiating off of them.
"Bring me another!"
Everyone scrambled for the door, climbing over one another, pushing the guards out of the way and fighting back when the guards grabbed them.
"Enough."
Like a ghost emerging from the dark, Fallyn stood up from the corner and walked toward the bars. Her voice was low and raspy from days of not speaking. She was pale from the blood loss, her cheeks were sunken in and she had to use the cell bars for stability but her eyes blazed with fury. The chaos seemed to quiet down as everyone waited to see what the would happen to their now awakened leader and this monster. Even the guards appeared to wait.
"Well, well. We have a cowering rat." The large guard made his way to the front of her cell, he rested his hands on the bars next to hers. "Do you have something to tell me zenska'ine (derogatory female name). You do, don't you? All rats have something they are hiding." He flexed his hands on the bars, an orange red mist began to swirl around his feet. "Tell me what I want to know or I will have another ..."
"I am the one who set the prisoner free. I am the one." Fallyn held her head high and looked the guard in the eyes daringly. Her voice was low but firm and although her body was weak she stood with complete authority. "Only a pathetic worm would hurt those weaker than ..."
He roared his anger, the colored energy now engulfing his body as he flexed his hands on the bars, ripping the door from its place and throwing to the side.
"You are the one, huh, zenska'ine?" He had to bend down to enter the cell to reach Fallyn and grab her by the shoulder. Dragging her out, he threw her on top of the dead mother and her daughter. "You are the cause of all of this. You caused them to die."
Bracing herself for the fall, she had no choice but to land on them. Although many of her injuries had been healed by Meryha, her head was not and she was slow to get up.
"Fallyn!" Reesa tried to reach her but two of the guards held her back. "Fallyn get up, please."
"Keep quiet or I will kill you along with those other cows."
"No."
"What did you say, zenska'ine?"
Fallyn braced herself against the wall. The front of her body stained red with the blood of the two prisoners he had killed. She faced him and spoke quietly but firmly. "You will not hurt anyone else."
The large guard let out a sadistic laugh. Slapping the back of the nearest man, he pushed and shoved the prisoners out of his way, sending many to the floor. "You think you are a strong one, hmm, zenska'ine? I will show you the weakness of a female." He stepped forward and grabbed her by the throat. "Come, so me how strong you think you are." He dragged her to the end of the corridor, her limp body hanging from his hand.
"Put the cows back in their pens," he barked as he and Fallyn disappeared around the corridor.
"No! Fallyn! We..."
"Not now Reesa." Meryha dug her fingers deep into Reesa's arm. "We have to stay calm and think of a way to get out." They were both being pushed back to their cells. "Find a way to get her back."
Some women started to fight back. They hit and kicked at the guards but it did not end well. They were severely beaten, the sound of fist connecting with flesh echoed in the cold dark room. A few of the women were piled on top of the dead mother and daughter.
"I want to get her back but if we get hurt or worse then we will be no help to her."
They were forced back into another cell along with a few different women. The door slammed shut.
"She has not been awake for days and now that... that monster took her. He..."
"That's what I don't understand. Her head was not healed. I felt her injury and there is no way she should be awake. It was too severe." She took Reesa by the hand and led her to the corner where they were away from the guards and others.
"Maybe it took time for your healing to take affect. You worked on her day and night, your powers may need more time." Reesa was looking around the room, taking in the scared women, the guards, the growing heap of the dead.
"Maybe...?" Meryha's voice was a whisper but something in her tone caught Reesa's attention.
"You don't think so?" Reesa's head whipped around giving Meryha her full attention. "What do you think it could be then?"
The sound of heavy footfalls reverberated throughout the room as the guards finally left, leaving behind the women they killed.
"I think Fallyn has some kind of power too." Meryha hugged her arms around her body. "I felt something when I was healing her. It would surface when I couldn't do anymore... like something crawling out of a deep dark well. It was old... strong. I think that thing helped Fallyn recover."
"Let's talk about this later when we have Fallyn. Right now we need to see who is able and willing to fight. We have to get out of here." Reesa stepped away from the corner and faced the women in the cell. " I know that everyone is tired and scared but we need to get all."
"Are you crazy! They just killed seven of us! What are we suppose to do?" Te'Mia cried. "My friend was murdered by those monsters and you want us to what? Fight back. No Reesa, I can't. We can't! They will kill us all."
"They are willing to kill us anyway." Xandria stepped forward, leaning her body into the bars of her cell. "I am with Reesa. I would rather die trying to get away than sit here and wait for them to kill us on a whim. If anything, we could take a few out with us."
Slowly, more and more women stepped forward. Their consents of approval rang out as several others joined in the plan for escape.
Meryha walked up and stood next to Reesa. "It's like you are a different person. Before, you hated it when Fallyn would leave the cell and now, you are leading us all out. What changed?"
Reesa grabbed Meryha in a suffocating hug. "I am scared, Meryha."
She jerked out of Reesa's hold. "Wha..." She stopped short seeing the tears course down Reesa's face.
Trying to stifle her sobs, Reesa kept her head down whispering to her. "They are going to kill us all in three days."
"Reesa!"
"We have to leave before then. They are preparing for someone to come to the island and,"
"Island! We are on an island? How are we going to get off an island?" Meryha grabbed her by the arms and dragged her over to the corner, away from the others as they were making plans.
"I don't know, a boat? There has to be a way for the others to come and go. I hear whispers, conversations that someone important is coming. 'It's time; the plan is being moved forward; we have to do it now...' they keep repeating the same things over and over. I think that they are leaving the island and we are no longer needed."
"So what, they brought us here just to kill us? That doesn't make any sense, why would they go through all that, the kidnapping, taking us away from our homes on those huge monsters, bringing us here...just to kill us." Meryha's voice was strained, like she was in between crying and screaming.
"They did need us. They needed all of us but.."
"For what?"
Reesa took a deep breathe and sat down on the stone bench. "They needed female's to have offspring." She ignored Meryha's shocked expression and continued. "From what I heard and can understand their people are dying off slowly because there are no females. They have been doing this for generations, kidnapping women and bringing them here, hoping that the males will take a female prisoner as a 'mate'. But it's different now. The prisoner that Fallyn helped was important, they want him dead and we are no longer needed. They are moving ahead with their plans."
Meryha could not believe all of this. 'What is going to happen to all of us?' she wondered. "What are their plans?" she whispered, terrified of the answer.
"War."
