Dragon Rider
The name Dragon Rider is a bit of a misnomer, as it implies the rider chooses their dragon and has any measure of control over the beast. In reality, dragons choose their Riders and if the Rider doesn't respect and work with the dragon then the dragon will often simply abandon them and choose another.
Every dragon picks based on their own personal criteria, and anyone can be chosen to be a Dragon Rider. Most live in The City of Song, a place specially designed for dragons and the Riders to live together no matter what form the dragon chooses to take.
To become a Rider isn't all adventuring and fun either - in many cases it's boring, platonic, and domestic. Being chosen as a Rider also means adjusting to the dragon, and while many try to pick Riders they think will mesh well with their own personalities (an adventurous dragon choosing an equally adventurous Rider, for example) sometimes things don't always work out. But one who is willing to adjust to the dragon's lifestyle, or who can convince the dragon to adjust to theirs, is a welcome change for most.
Dragons often share their hoards with their Riders, allowing them to take what small bits they need to survive, and of course provide their Riders with care and protection. To be chosen is an honor that is rarely turned down.
