Nikolai and their family existed in Bozja, the hrothgar born in the midst of the war. When their parents died a couple with an infant daughter took Nik in, not caring that they were deaf and it was difficult to communicate.
Then they died too, and Nikolai was left with the infant and a warzone. Astraea and Lalaan found the pair a few days later, starved and traumatized and Nikolai unwilling to trust anyone again after what they had been through.
But with a bit of coaxing Astraea and Lalaan got the two away from Bozja and decided to take care of them. When the infant was old enough they realized she was mute, and the sign language developed between siblings helped her and Nik form a very close bond.
As soon as they were old enough Nikolai joined the Immortal Flames. They've taken up a gladiatorial sword and shield fighting style, always happy to lead the charge as they live by a strict code of honor. Most know Nikolai as the one they can turn to for help in almost any aspect, and for many they're the friend that would help bury a body as the meme goes.
Because several timelines exist for these characters things can get a bit confusing, so I wanted a space to give a small explainer of this.
Please be aware there may be spoilers for any point of the game's story, so read at your own risk.
The Primary Timeline is one in which Nikola does not exist.
The Secondary Timeline is where Nikola and Fyrihanth are adopted by Lalaan and Astraea from Bozja during the events of Endwalker. This only changes from the Tertiary Timeline in then when of things, really.
The Tertiary Timeline is the one that you can safely assume applies to most of the information on this page about Nikola. It's also the timeline listed in their history section.
