November 6th
Prolouge
Raised in a casually Pankóthlism family, which fled from their home country of Tu'leren Kingdom due to the weight of their family name to Qerani. Ember was raised caught between the success of her older brother, and the chronic illness of her younger one, never able to fully grasp the attention or affection of her parents. She was naturally withdrawn, and spent most of her time reading, so was easy to miss.
Her story really began in her high-school years, when she met the solitary boy Gabriel Balogobov, who worshipped at their same chapel every week, with no family to accompany him. Her natural curiousity of the boy turned to affection, and they began dating. She introduced him to her group of friends, Laken Bitsui, Tala Hajro, Alice Carroll, and he swiftly became popular in their small school.
Ember, who was forbidden to date kept the relationship secret, meeting Gabriel in the woods. Although her parents admired her friendship with Gabriel, believing him to be a sweet church boy.
Even as the relationship turned toxic, and eventually severely physically abusive, Ember didn't dare reach out to her family for advice and help. Given no teaching on how to navigate such abuse, and the topic being taboo within their holy scriptures, believing that once two are joined, they are joined for life, Ember felt trapped by a relationship where roses were an apology for bruises. She developed anorexia, partly hoping her ugliness would scare Gabriel away from her, as she was too terrified to leave the relationship on her own.
Her best friend, Laken, soon noticed that something was very wrong with Ember. He found the bruises and confronted her, and she admitted it was done by Gabriel. Crying for Laken to not tell anyone as he left, Laken confronted Gabriel in a rage right there at school, resulting in a physical altercation that landed both boys in hot water. Ember was eventually called into the office to substainate Laken's claims, but she denied any abuse.
Regardless, Laken's status in the school and his family's wealthy reputation resulted in him being able to stay at the school, while Gabriel, was punished and expelled, as well as having his scholarships revoked.
Ember tried to appease to Gabriel, but he ignored her, and began garnering status and reputation for being "martyred", rallying others who felt the school treated them unfairly, and garnered the support of Alice. Together they created a group known as Martyr.
Later, Gabriel had returned to Ember, breaking into her window in
hopes of "repairing" the relationship, getting retribution and pleading from Ember. With no one home he confronted her, and once again became exceedingly violent.
He assaulted her to the point of blacking out. Ember awoke to the sound of Gabriel's pants zipping and crazed mumbling, and she stumbled bleeding into the bathroom.
Ember, weeks after being released from the hospital when needing some fresh air, stumbled into the forest to the same place she often met with Gabriel, but the only thing that welcomed her was Laken's hand, sticking out of a ditch.
The investigators didn't put in much effort, and ultimately the case began going cold after the months turned into a year.
Ember was prescribed anxiety medications that continued to degrade her memory alongside her PTSD. She has become an unreliable narrator.
With time ticking down before the lone murder case of Oaken Stream goes cold, she knew deep down who killed Laken amongst the jumbled mess of her memories, but had no evidence to prove it. She also no confidence or strength to find such evidence deep within the violent gang of youth, Martyr. She was at a hopeless end.
If she ever was to find the truth of who killed Laken, she knew she'd have to do it on her own so no one else would get hurt.
When the solution, a Silver Amulet ( Amulet of Feline ) fell into her grasp, presenting her power and anonymity at the loss of her humanity, she took it- but only ended up trapped in the manipulative strings of the Amulet's Guardian Spirit Veikr. Veikr tried to push her to act recklessly, to abandon all assistance from others who chose to help her in her journey to uncover the truth, and Ember soon realized she had fallen trap for the same kind of manipulative abuse wrought to her by Gabriel. She had enough, and abandoned Veikr's powers, mustering up enough strength to finish the job on her own. She got the evidence she needed forged strong alliances, and confronted Gabriel and stopped his scheme.
But it was too late, and she would come to learn that the manipulation wrought to her by Veikr had already paid off- and she would spend the rest of her first life trying to atone.
