"Hmm. Well, I can take breaks from being horrific if I want to." Aria said nonchalantly.
"Hmm. Well, I can take breaks from being horrific if I want to." Aria said nonchalantly.
"So far you haven't been very horrific. Just a bit startling." Except for that first day, when she killed the little servant boy. Ru's good mood evaporated when he remembered how scared the kid was. How he was crying as he waited to die. How the light left his eyes just like it left Adrien's. Ryu swallowed heavily, wiping all trace of sadness from his eyes.
"Hmm. You're still hung up about the kid? Really? No, I can't read minds, if you're wondering. Faces are easier either way." Ariana said.
"I'll take your word for it." While Ariana was nonchalant towards death, Ru certainly wasn't. He refused to be. It just… couldn't be moral to go around hurting people, even if it was for someone's continued survival. Call him naive, but he wanted to keep people happy and safe and alive
"So, another game?" Ariana asked. She didn't care how Ru answered. But she was bored, and him saying yes would at least give her something to do. Rosanna was still quite angry with her either way.
"Sure." Ru set up his side again, deciding on a new strategy to use. He had an idea of what Ariana could do which should let him know how to beat her. Or… not get butchered in 5 moves the way he had last time. "Do you know what's up with Rosie? She seemed a little angry." As did Ariana. Had they had a fight?
"Hmm. Didn't notice." Aria said coldly.
That was a definite yes to Ru's unasked question. "Sure you didn't. You and Rosie are close, right? You've been… friends for a long time." He chose his words carefully, putting special prevalence on a few words he hoped would highlight that he knew about Rosie and Ariana. This was probably a conversation they needed to be having.
"Well, friends, obviously. Ages, duh. You say it like it's a problem." Ariana huffed, folding her arms.
"You know how to talk to her right? Can you tell me how best to speak with her? She seems really snippy and I don't want to piss her off or anything." Ru lightened his tone and groaned internally. Of course, she wasn't going to respond to subtlety. Why would she? Even if she got it, she could pretend not to and let it fly way over her head.
"Snippy? How dare you! She isn't like-never mind. Listen, why's she so interesting to you anyways? She isn't just a pretty face, moron." Aria snapped, standing up.
Oh boy. Ru took a deep breath and tried to deconstruct what Ariana was so mad about. "I'm just saying she seemed annoyed when I talked to her. I want to know how to not piss her off every time I talk to her. And I know she isn't a pretty face. She's a member of our staff who deserves respect." While Rosie was very pretty, Ru wasn't interested in her. He was interested in seeming approachable and being able to talk to someone without offending her.
"Well, she's not very good with travelling. Just leave it." Aria lied.
(Heading to bed. Goodnight)
Was Ariana kidding, or did she really think Ru was this dumb? Rosies was- according to Ariana- being hunted by scary people who wanted to use her magic and she was bad with traveling? He didn't press her. "Whatever you say, Darling. You don't need to lie to me, you know. You can just tell me to stop pushing."
"Fine. Shut up then, or I'll slit your throat here and now." Ariana threatened, entirely serious.
Ru blanched and nodded, setting up the last of his pieces. He wondered if he should tell her to make her move or just chill out on the patio and enjoy the breeze. Probably chill on the patio. There was no need to antagonize Ariana and maybe get murdered.
"So, how was your little trip?" Ariana asked, moving a piece. She knew Ru's main strategy, this game should be even quicker because of that. Or if he changed it up, she could simply adapt.
"Better than usual." Ru blocked her piece, rewriting his entire strategy to adapt to what he knew of hers. It would probably end up failing him, but hopefully, he would do better this time. If he focused on her moves, he could survive a bit longer.
"And where did you go? What did you do?" Aria asked, with only the slightest hint of actually being interested. How cute. Ru thought he knew her strategy. She stole his Bishop, and winked ironically.
"It's an ocean. I swam." Well, turned into a seal and explored the ocean until the ache in his bones became bearable again. Ru didn't really care about giving Ariana the full answer when she clearly wasn't interested. There was no need to tell a story if she didn't care to listen. He captured the piece that had killed his bishop with a small smile.
"Hmm. Right." she said, and in one swift movement, captured Cerulean's king. "Wow, you are really, really, really bad at this." she chortled.
Damn. Ru passed Ariana her pieces and took his back. "Yeah. I haven't played in a while. And I've never competed against someone as skilled as you." It had taken him a shorter amount of time to get stuck in checkmate but he had captured more pieces, so that was a win.
"Well, I take pride in winning. Never really learned how to lose." Aria said casually.
"That's a shame," Ru replied. If you never got defeated, you never learned how to take a loss. Pride festered in your heart and pride was never good in large doses. "Would you like to play again or are you sick of beating me?"
"I dunno. Would you?" Ariana asked.
"I don't care much. If you don't decide to play, I'll fuck off to some secluded part of the house and if you do, I'll learn how to play chess a little better." Ru shrugged, setting up his side of the board in case she decided to play chess again. Maybe he could go over some of the law books in the library later. Or try to explore the weird secret passages he'd found behind a few of the bookshelves. Exploring was becoming a very attractive option when compared to the dry law books on the shelves.
"Well, it is getting mildly repetitive. I'd actually like to explore the place a little more, if you don't mind." Ariana said.
"Have fun. I'll be in the library if you need me." Exploration it was. Ru had barely been able to unearth the passages before he'd had to return home. What could be hiding in those long forgotten halls? Secret rooms? Treasure? Who knew. It was all so exciting. He pushed himself to his feet, ready to head out. "If you'd like, you could come with."
"Fine. I'm bored anyways, it couldn't hurt." Ariana huffed, standing up.
Ru smiled and led Ariana into the depths of the library. The shelves that triggered the passages were on the very back wall of the room. He wracked his brain, doing his best to remember which shelves had the hallways behind them. There was a segment of the wall he could narrow it down to, and he began pulling out the fifth book to the left on the fifth shelf. "There's a passage behind a few of these. If you want to look for them with me."
