Kallen began feeling more and more uneasy until he was actually shivering. The world around them was dead, and he felt like someone was watching them, even though that was ridiculous. They were driving at 70- miles per hour and there wasn't a car in sight. "Veronica, I'm getting a bad feeling about this," He said, hints of fear seeping into his voice.
Veronica stopped singing and looked around. "What the…this place is creepy," she said quietly. She began to slow down as she came into the town because of a speed limit change.
"Veronica," Kallen whined. He grabbed at her sleeve for some kind of comfort.
"We can turn back if you want…" she said, sounding more confident than she felt.
Kallen frowned. He didn't want to force Veronica to miss out on something really cool just because he was a little wimp. He took a few deep breaths and steeled himself. This was all just one wreird coincidence. Besides, dark magic had been illegal forever. "No, no. It's fine!"
They finally pulled up to the town and Sofia was driving less than 20 miles per hour. "I wonder why this pace is so dead…" she wondered half to herself.
"There was a string of kidnappings Veronica, they're all probably baracading themselves in their houses." He turned the radio down to see if there was any noise outside, but there was nothing to be heard.
"If it were me I'd just move," she said, slightly confused. She shrugged and kept driving, not really knowing where to go.
Kallen gave her a judgmental look. "It's not that easy Veronica, this is a small town. Most of them don;t have enough money to move." He flinched when they passed a particularly forboding building.
"Well I get that, but still. Like couldn't they move to some city and live off of subsidized housing or some other government thing? Like, it would be horrible to stay here…" she said quietly.
(And just to make this clear that was not meant with any shade to any person. I once had to live off government money with my mom so I know kinda how it works. It's a not so great thing and I don't want any person to get offended if they read that <3)
Kallen shrugged. He caught site of a lone coffee shop with an open sigh in the window, and he pointed it out. "How about we stop there. It's open, and I could really use some coffee if we're going to explore this scary as fuck town."
"Sure," Sofia agreed. She pulled into the parking lot of the shop slowly and parked close to the front door, grabbed her keys and wallet, and got out of the car. The place looked decades old. With it's light blue paint peeling away from the walls, and the glass being fixed with clear packaging tape, it didn't seem like the nicest place. But it was coffee…you can't go wrong with coffee.
Kallen grabbed his wallet too, hurrying out of the car with as much grace as he could muster. The air around the shop smelled like rot, and it got stronger and stronger as he and Veronica approached, until they finally opened the door. They were immediately hit with a draft of warm, humid air that smelled like a rotting body. Kallen hesitantly stepped inside, hoping for the best.
Veronica stood in the doorway for a moment, taking in her surroundings. The coffee shop was empty. Which wasn't really surprising when she thought about it, but at the same time very unnerving. She walked over to a booth in the back and sat down, not feeling comfortable sitting by the windows. The whole inside of the shop looked about the same as the outside.
When Kallen tried to sit down beside Veronica, the chair broke, splintering into tiny fractals of wood. He let out a tiny yelp and tried again with a new chair, which thankfully held. He glanced around the room, noting that everything was covered in a thick layer of dust. "It's like nobody's been here in a hundred years," he joked, trying to lighten the mood.
Veronica nods and picks up a very dusty menu, blowing the dust off of it. She coughed slightly and rubbed her eyes. "The menu looks…normal."
Kallen nodded, standing up to inspect the counter. It too was covered in dust, but when he peered over it he noticed a few footsteps leading into a back room. There was a bell on the counter, so without thinking too much, he rang it. A few seconds later a teen boy walked out, looking like he'd had all the life drained out of him.
Veronica stood up and walked over to join Kallen. She saw the boy and gasped slightly. "Ummm…"
The boy gave a light groan before gesturing at the smudged chalkboard behind him. His uniform had been ripped a couple times, and he had circles under his eyes the size of quarters. Kallen glanced up at the menu before shakily ordering a black coffee.
