"Sorry mother," she said teasingly. "And do we have to listen to the news, it's so boring…" she muttered, rolling her eyes slightly.

Deleted user

"It's not boring, it's informative," He whined, pouting in her general direction. "Besides, it has stuff we need to know. For instance: there are some dragons loose around here and it could be a real problem for us if we're not careful."

Deleted user

"I guess so…But I mean, dragons are pretty cool sooo," she said sarcastically. She slammed on the breaks suddenly. After being distracted, she hadn't even noticed a stop sign.

Deleted user

Kallen lurched forward, giving a distressed swack. "Jesus Veronica! Be more careful!" He elbowed her in the side to get the point across.

Deleted user

"Oww….you hurt me," Veronica said sarcastically. She sighed softly and turned around a corner, not looking at Kallen.

(I'm so sorry, notebook completely stopped working for a few hours! I tried everything but it literally JUST got going again)

Deleted user

"Oh please," Kallen snorted. His stomach rumbled loudly, keeping him from going for a second hit. "Hey, can we stop for lunch? I'm dying."

Deleted user

"You're lucky there's a rest stop in 2 miles, after that there's nothing for 2 hours," Veronica agreed. She pulled off onto the exit that was marked to have the rest stop and parked very sloppily in a spot. "We're here!"

Deleted user

Kallen gave her a weak smile as he peeled his sweaty calves off the seat. "Thanks." He got out of the car and streached, wincing when his back gave a loud pop. "I'm going to grab as much junkfood as I can get my hands on, want anything?"

Deleted user

"Nah, I'm on a diet. You know that," she said, sounding disgusted. Veronica shook her head and shut off the car, but kept the radio on.

Deleted user

"You and your diets," He joked, slipping into the store with a wink. Inside there was a single orc sitting at the counter, reading some sort of magazine. Kallen smiled uneasily at him and quickly picked out his snacks. The orc seemed less than thrilled to check him out, but Kallen was soon outside again, munching halppily on potato chips.

Veronica cringed when she saw him shoving the food into his mouth, even though he really was only eating them normally. She rolled her eyes and picked up her phone, the news app had sent her a notification. She shrugged and set it down without checking.

Deleted user

Kallen noticed her cringe and gave her a smile before he crinckled up the chip bag and threw it into the nearest trashcan. "What's up now?" he asked, gesturing towards Veronica's phone. "Becuase if it's not too serious I'd like to leave soon. The guy in the shop freaked me out a little." He gave a short shudder.

Deleted user

"Why don't you check, I'm driving," she teased before pulling out of her spot and heading towards the exit.

Deleted user

"Gosh, you make me do everything" he teased, unlocking her phone and checking the news app. The top article was an opinion piece on some strange goings on in a town not far from where they were. Apparently, people had been disappearing for weeks on end, only to reappear later with completely different personalities. "Veronica, check it out!" he said, shoving the phone in her face. (Dis ok?)

Deleted user

(Absolutely)
Veronica flinched slightly and pushed his hand away. "You're going to get us killed," she muttered, before taking the phone. She read the article quickly and smirked. "We should go."

Deleted user

Kallen frowned. "But we'll be going off course. Didn't we say we wanted to go all the way across the country?"
(Cool, I'll be awol from like 6-8 tonight, fyi)

Deleted user

"What's can it hurt. Just a small detour," Veronica said suddenly excited. She made a sharp left turn and started to head towards the town.

Deleted user

Kallen heaved a sigh and grumbled, but deep down he was looking forward to seeing the strange little town just as much as Veronica was. Still, he felt an odd sense of foreboding as they drove closer and closer. The world around him seemed to share his mood, clouds growing darker and grass getting yellower and more sickly as they approached.

Veronica's favorite song came on and she turned it up almost as loud as it could go. She started to sing along with it obnoxiously, nudging Kallen with her elbow telling him to join in.

Deleted user

"Oh my god," He groaned, showing her elbow away from him. The song kept booming, and eventually, he gave a defeated sigh and began singing. He realized he'd been sighing way too much lately. Maybe he should try to break the habit.

"There we goooo," she said excitedly. She was hardly paying attention to their surroundings and didn't notice things becoming…darker? No, just dead. Trees with no leaves in the middle of summer. Grass almost brown. It looked as though no one had been in this place for years….decades…
