It was nearly dawn. The sky was dark still, but not a dark to fear. This was a dark that promised light, and those were the least terrifying kinds of darkness. The clouds painted themselves in a series of purples, golds, and orange hues and scattered across the sky. Then the morning sun rose, peeking out from beyond the horizon line and pouring its radiance over all that was good in Sunshire. The elegant spiral towers of the castle especially gleamed in the early glow. Strands of gold twisted intricately together to form a joined image of power and grace.

Inside the castle, a pure quietness hung in the halls since the castle's residents, mainly the servants and maids, had not yet risen from their beds. They all remained succumbed to their sleep and their peaceful dreams. All of them… but one.

Gentle footsteps came from the direction of the queen's private chambers. With skirts flying, the High Queen Consort of Sunshire raced through the empty main hall, eager to catch a glimpse of raw morning haze. She knew her destination: the balcony that overlooked the castle's gardens. Where the sun would poke through the trees at just the right angle at just the right time that she could catch it and let it heal her. Finally, she found the doors she was looking for. Taking the smooth golden handles in her palms, she flung the doors open wide and stepped onto the gorgeous balcony.

Sights like these were rare. The pure morning sun was just beginning to rise, and with its arrival, the sky began to blush. Adelia sighed quietly and lifted her fingers up into the light. She had to stretch a bit (she had been running late), but the moment the light brushed her hand, a sense of peace washed over her.

"Let the light lift you," her mother always told her.

Adelia closed her eyes. "Lift me," she murmured and felt instant reprieve. A sweet breeze filled her lungs, and after a few moments, she exhaled softly. Her eyes fluttered open, and a smile was born on her lips. Another blessed day.

Far from the castle, in a cottage at the edge of a secluded village, Victor kneaded Veronica’s blankets. He softly purred, waiting for Veronica to awaken. When her eyes finally began to open, Victor chirped and hopped down from the bed.

Veronica sat up and looked toward Victor. He had gone to a window, and sat behind the curtain, chirping at something outside. Curious, she walked over to the window and pulled up the curtain.

The brilliant sunrise beamed upon the meadow outside. Its gentle rays blinded Veronica for a moment, but she recovered quickly. She smiled and rushed out of her room to find her sister.

Veronica barged into Kathrina’s pitch black room, the morning light breaking through the darkness like fire, and shook her sister’s shoulder. An angry groan answered and Kathrina flipped her blanket over her head.

“Kati, you must see! It’s as I predicted! The sunrise has come!”

“For the hundredth time, Veronica, it’s just a stupid sunrise! Leave me alone!”Kathrina said.

“No, Kati! It’s time!”Veronica insisted, pulling Kathrina off the bed.

Kathrina growled and glared at Veronica, but stood up and followed her. She stumbled a few times, walking much like some of her undead friends. Her mood soured even more as Veronica opened the curtain.

“Shut that thing, will you?”Kathrina snapped at Veronica.

Victor turned and meowed sweetly, his gold eyes looking back and forth between the two sisters. Kathrina sighed and ruffled the fur on the tomcat’s head.

“Hi, Victor,”Kathrina mumbled.

“He’s the one that discovered this! Isn’t this wonderful? It’s time! It’s time! It’s time!”Veronica said, jumping around excitedly.

“Shut up and sit down, Veronica. I suppose I’ll make breakfast,”Kathrina ordered.

“I could make breakfast,”Veronica offered.

“The last time you did that, you nearly set the house on fire. Never again.”

Kathrina disappeared into the kitchen and a wonderful smell soon drifted from it.

(This was a bit longer than I expected)

Meanwhile, in your average condo…

Zelda was already plenty awake, as she had woken up just a few hours ago. She paced around her living room, waiting for the kettle to finish heating up.

Soon enough, the kettle screeched and she poured the boiling water into a mug with a teabag full of Oolong tea.

"This is going to be a day," she said, sighing, "I can already tell that little goody two shoes is happy!"

She drank her tea, staring into the hallway occasionally. When she finished, she went into one of the rooms in the hallway.

"You know," she said with a bit of a sassy tone, "for a shadow, you sure do sleep a lot."

Reese, the subject of Zelda's speech, let out an audible groan.

(Zelda 100% has a British accent, BTW.)

About an hour later, Adelia was dressed in much more queenly attire than her pale green nightgown and strolling through the castle's halls. Her faithful head maid Jovie kept near to her queen's side.

"Anything I can do for you Your Majesty?" Jovie asked as they approached the queen's study. It was on the other side of the castle as it was originally designed to be the king's study, and the queen's was much smaller and closer to her resting chambers. However, both Adelia and Jovie agreed that since Sunshire currently had no king, the queen would benefit from the larger study.

"No, Jovie," Adelia assured her. "I'll be alright."

"Alright, Your Majesty. But if you need anything-"

"Just let you know," the queen teased. "I know."

Jovie looked surprised, but she laughed a little. "I'll be going then, Your Majesty."

Adelia smiled kindly. "And I know you have many responsibilities, Jovie. Go on."

The shy maid nodded and made her way back from where they'd came.

Victor watched as Veronica hurriedly scribbled runes onto a scroll. She mumbled a spell to imbue the runes with magic, a large smile on her face.

“Victor, go bring me something. Um… a rose petal, dry, even if you must steal it,”Veronica abruptly said.

Victor hopped down from his perch and trotted out of the room, heading straight from Kathrina. He squeezed into the dark room, his fluffy tail swishing at the sound of Kathrina’s own spellcasting, and jumped up to a shelf with dried herbs. He snatched a dried rose petal from the neat pile and hopped down.

“Victor! How many times have I told you? There’s herbs in the kitchen!”Kathrina shrieked, looking up from her bubbling cauldron.

Victor raced from the room and back to Veronica. He meowed and Veronica scratched him on the head, snickering.

“Little rascal,”Veronica said, taking the petal and crushing it, sprinkling it on the scroll to complete the imbuing spell.

Reese rolled over to look at Zelda.

"I may not need to sleep," they said, "but I like to."

Zelda let out a bit of a sigh but decided not to say anything.

"It's morning," she said a little brashly, "It's time to get up. Do you want me to get you tea?"

Reese sat up on the bed. "Do we have any peppermint tea?"

Zelda nodded and headed to the living room to pour them a cup. Reese followed shortly behind.

(I love how Adelia lives in a castle, Kathrina & Veronica live in a cottage and Zelda & Reese live in a straight-up Condo.)

@emilyevewrites group

(Haha right? Character development at its finest. Also, just a reminder the sisters need to be gearing up for return/revenge soon. No rush, but like… soon ;))

Adelia watched Jovie walk away, her eyes soft. She turned back to her study, opened the door, and went inside.

Thoughts, ideas, conversations all floated through her mind as she worked her way through mindless policies for her people. She continuously sipped on her tea to keep herself awake. She hadn't been able to sleep last night (not that she would admit it to Jovie or anyone else for that matter). Adelia found her sleep becoming less frequent, and when she would finally manage to doze off, she slept restlessly. This was why she needed the raw morning light to refresh her every morning. However, sipping on her tea didn't do much good to erase another restless night, and the queen nodded off into a light sleep over her papers.

(I'm not sure what kind of dream I want her to have, but it involves her sisters.)

(Waiting for ‘the signal’. I was actually thinking it might happen at dusk, just because of the darkness, but that’s up to Zelda. Oh, and I forgot to mention this earlier, I do tend to write longer stuff, but I’ll try to keep it reasonable)

Veronica finished her fifth scroll, and gasped. The same results. Her prediction had come true. Finally! It was time!

“Kati! Kati! We must pack! I feel it! It’s time! I know it with every bone in my body. The call will come!”

Veronica hurriedly bundled as many scrolls, trinkets, cat supplies, and herb jars in her pack. She then rushed into Kathrina’s room, where her sister was busy pouring the last few drops of poison into a vial.

“Yes, yes, Veronica. Your little prophecy will come true and you will have all the fun you want,”Kathrina replied sarcastically.

“Oh, you’re no fun at all.”

“You woke me up! For what, some stupid sunrise that happens everyday?”

“This one is different. I predicted this very sunrise would happen. Then, the call comes and we rise to glory once more, ruling at the sides of our elder sister, Zelda!”Veronica insisted dramatically.

Kathrina sighed and shook her head. She then noticed Veronica’s pack.

“Amateur. Is that really how you carry your things? You clearly need some lessons on magic then.”

Veronica huffed,”I enchant items better than you ever could!”

“Then make a portable house. Or, at least, a portable chest. Besides, I’m already packed.”

Kathrina put a stopper in her newest poison vial, put it in a case next to her, closed it, and tapped the lock. The case shrank and Kathrina placed it in her belt pouch.

“Done.”

Reese sat on the couch, drinking their tea, while Zelda stood in the kitchen making hash browns.

"So," she said, her voice trailing off, "we're going to see your aunts today. The twins and I are meeting to talk about something."

"The twins," Reese asked, "Kathrina and Veronica?"

Zelda nodded. "I know you've never met them before, but you're coming with me to see them this time instead of me leaving you with your babysitter."

"I didn't like her anyways," Reese said, "Ms.Karen was pretty mean to me."

"She was pretty mean," Zelda nodded, "though I thought you didn't mind being called a boy."

"I don't mind," Reese said, "but yelling at me that my 'opinion' didn't matter is not okay with me."

"Hmm," Zelda agreed, "Hash browns are ready, by the way."

@RiverTheSeawing

Zelda and Reese finished up their breakfast.

"Could you grab your Katana?"

Reese nodded, going to grab said Katana.

"Wait," Reese said, "Why are we heading to their place if they only live in a cottage and we have a huge condo?"

"They live closer to something important," she said casually, "which is probably my fault for moving out of the country."

The two packed up and headed to Kathrina and Veronica's cottage.

(Something I forgot to mention in the character notes, Reese gets mistaken for being an enchanted child a lot.)

@emilyevewrites group

(Ooooh, a dusk attack sounds perfect!)

"Your Majesty? My Queen? Queen Adelia?!"

The distressed calls of her maid woke Adelia from her haunted sleep. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes to see Jovie's alarmed face staring back at her. "Your Majesty, are you alright?"

"Yes, yes, I'm fine," Adelia quickly smoothed her hair and clothes as she talked.

Jovie didn't look the least bit convinced. "I hate to contradict you, but I don't believe that you're fine."

Adelia pursed her lips. The words begged to come from her lips, just as they did every day, but she'd made a vow to never speak how she truly desired to her head maid. Instead, she only sighed and shook her head. "I'm sorry, my dear, but it's only a headache. It will pass with time, I promise."

Jovie took a small step back and nodded. "I understand. Is there anything I can do for you?"

Adelia noticed her tea was nearing empty. "Could you refill my tea?"

"Of course, Your Majesty." Without another word, Jovie took the teacup and left the room.

Adelia released a shaky sigh.

@RiverTheSeawing

(Why am I just imagining Adelia giving Zelda trouble for "enchanting a child", Reese being confused as hell and Adelia telling Reese that she can fix whatever Zelda did? Why is that the main thing on my mind?)

Kathrina and Veronica spent much of the morning packing and tidying up. They prepared for every outcome they could think of, including a visit from their elder sister.

Victor, as usual, watched the whole thing. He occasionally move to the window, but would return to his perch if nothing interesting showed up.

As the sisters worked, they sang of their sister, the wrongs done to her, and the glory to come. By the time they were finished, they both gave happy little shrieks before sitting down to take a break.

“I wonder what we’ll do, once our brat sister is removed from the throne,”Veronica said.

“Don’t think too far ahead. We still have to remove her,”Kathrina warned. Veronica sighed.

“Still, I can’t help but wonder.”

“When will you ever learn, Veronica?”

@Serpentess health_and_safety language

“Oh, she’s here!”Veronica burst.

She jumped up from her seat and opened the door, smiling wide.

“Come in, dear sister! You’re always welcome in our humble abode. And who is this?”

“Veronica, really? Why do you always have to get so formal?”Kathrina sighed.

“It’s being respectful, Kati. I wish you would do the same,”Veronica snorted.

“Hello, Zelda. The weapon rack is just to your left,”Kathrina said, ignoring Veronica.

Veronica huffed and crossed her arms over her chest. Victor hopped up on a window near the door, meowing his own greeting at Zelda. His eyes bored into Reese, cautious but curious.

@RiverTheSeawing

She placed her and Reese's weapons on that rack.

"This is my child, Reese," she said, "I usually leave them with their babysitter, Ms.Karen, but she got fired a week ago. I also brought them because they're going to help us."

"It's nice to meet you, Aunts."

Zelda patted her child on the head.

@Serpentess health_and_safety language

“It’s good to meet you too, Reese! I’m Veronica, and this is Kathrina. You are so unique, just look at you. You’re gorgeous!”

“I thought I was going to say that,”Kathrina complained.

“You were too slow,”Veronica replied with a giggle.

Victor meowed and hopped down, brushing Reese’s legs and purring. He hopped back up on the windowsill, kneading the wood.

“Ooh, I think Victor likes you. He’s a wonderful guardian, and so lovable. Just remember, Victor is the leader of this house. We are all guests at his convenience,”Veronica commented.

Kathrina snorted.

“That was just to stop us from fighting. Anyway, I have made a feast, and there is plenty to eat for all of us.”

Kathrina left for the kitchen. Veronica giggled and waved for Zelda and Reese to follow.

After her napping incident, the rest of Adelia's day seemed to fly by. She found herself winding down a little earlier than usual, so, with the sun still a ways up in the sky, she changed into a different dress and decided to go for a leisurely walk around the gardens.

Adelia was quick to soak up the sunlight as she stepped outside the castle's walls. She had always loved the castle, but the gardens were overly special to her. As she walked through the rows of flowers, each stem seemed to straighten up, and the buds tilted towards her, and the petals unfurled. The flowers were almost brought back to life when Adelia returned to the garden.
