"Nope, everything is alright." Mr. Brennahan nodded, gently ruffling his hair a little. "I don't want you to worry about any of this, alright? We're perfectly fine."
"Nope, everything is alright." Mr. Brennahan nodded, gently ruffling his hair a little. "I don't want you to worry about any of this, alright? We're perfectly fine."
"…Okay…" Lucas buried his face in Melissa's shoulder and clung to her, still trying to get himself to calm down.
Melissa ran her fingers through Lucas's hair, looking over to Mr. Brennahan with a soft look. She gently started pulling Lucas back into the living room, leading him to the couch. "Why don't we sit down? I'll go make us something to eat in a couple minutes."
"B-But it's your birthday… you… you shouldn't have to…" Lucas curled up on the couch with Melissa and held tighter to her.
"It's okay… you're clearly stressed out, please just let me. I want you to relax." Melissa insisted, kissing his forehead as she laid down next to him.
Lucas whined shakily and held tighter to Melissa. "But it's your birthday… w-we can just order something if you'd prefer…"
"Lu, it's okay. I don't mind making something." Melissa insisted, resting her chin on his shoulder. "Just please, relax."
Lucas was still pretty pale and jittery, and he wasn't really processing a ton of what Melissa was saying. "But… it's your birthday…" He repeated.
Melissa sighed softly, just gently petting him gently. She kept holding him close, glancing up when her dad walked through the room. She waved a little, watching as he disappeared upstairs. When he was gone, Melissa buried her face into his hair, kissing him softly. "You're alright… I'm here for you…"
"I-I could've burned your house down and killed all of us…" Lucas whispered shakily, holding tighter to Melissa. "I-I'm such a dumbass, I… I'm s-sorry…"
"Lucas, we're alright. Neither of us are hurt, and my dad only has a minor injury. He'll be alright." Melissa insisted, kissing the top of his head. "You're okay, neither of us are mad, and we've already forgiven you."
"Mm…" Lucas buried his face back in Melissa's shoulder and drew in a wavering breath. "I-I just… I feel awful…"
"What about?" Melissa asked softly, rubbing circles into his back. She continued to pet and rub him, attempting to relax him.
"What do you mean what about? I could've killed us! I could've burned down your house!" Lucas wailed.
Melissa sighed weakly, pulling him closer. “Lu, I need you to stop thinking about what could have happened. Focus on what did happen. Nobody died, and the house is still standing. The only injury is pretty minor. Please, don’t blame yourself. I fell asleep too, I could have stayed awake and waited for the oven to go off. It could have, but it didn’t happen.”
Lucas whimpered again and exhaled shakily. "I just… I feel bad about it, okay? I shouldn't have let myself fall asleep… food was my responsibility."
Melissa sighed softly, still rubbing circles into his back. “I don’t really want to, but do you want me to let you feel like this? Just leave you alone for a couple minutes?” She asked softly, trying to soothe him still.
"I…. I dunno, honestly…" Lucas sighed. "I just dunno… I just need a minute to get myself clearer… I think it's time for me to take my meds again."
Melissa nodded, kissing the top of his head as she sat up. “It is later in the afternoon… I- I’ll get Cody to get them for you.” She nodded a little, calling for the puppy and repeating what she remembered Lucas doing yesterday. “I’ll go get you some water.”
"Okay…" Lucas sighed softly and accepted his pills from Cody, swallowing them as well as he could when Melissa got him some water.
Melissa kissed his forehead, not laying back down next to him. “You probably need to eat, too… can I please go make lunch?”
"Fine, fine… just… don't strain yourself or whatever… I don't want you to have to work on your birthday…" Lucas curled up tighter on the couch and sighed again.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll probably just make sandwiches, something easy.” She whispered, kissing him again before heading into the kitchen.
"Okay…" Lucas fidgeted with his hands until Cody jumped up on the couch and cuddled up with him, at which point he relaxed a bit.
After a couple minutes, Melissa came back with their sandwiches, sitting down on the couch. "Here, love." She whispered, setting hers on the coffee table.
"Thanks, Mel… don't forget to eat, okay?" Lucas huddled up with Melissa and quietly started to eat.
"I won't, I just want to make sure you're okay, first." Melissa whispered, leaning back into the couch. She pulled him close, nuzzling against his cheek.
"Mm…" Lucas rested his head on Melissa's shoulder and sighed softly. "I love you…"
"I love you, too…" Melissa whispered, kissing the top of his head. "You know I'm not upset at all, right?"
Lucas nodded weakly and kept eating, curling up against Melissa's side.
