"It's nothing, Lu…" Melissa insisted, keeping her gaze off of him. "And even if it was something, I don't want to talk about it."
"It's nothing, Lu…" Melissa insisted, keeping her gaze off of him. "And even if it was something, I don't want to talk about it."
"Mmmm…" Lucas buried his face in Melissa's shoulder again. "Okay… but you'll tell me if you're ready, right?"
"Yeah…" Melissa sighed, resting her head against his. She numbly traced into the folds of his shirt, keeping quiet for the time being.
"Mmkay, Mel…" Lucas kissed Melissa's cheek and hummed softly to himself, eventually managing to relax some.
Melissa stopped tracing him, and just laid there. She kept quiet for a long time, eventually letting out a weak sigh. "We need to eat, don't we?"
"Mhmm… got anything in mind for breakfast? I can try my best to make it." Lucas yawned a bit.
"No, not really. Something that won't get you hurt, preferably." Melissa mumbled, giving him a half smile. "So maybe not pancakes. I don't want you burning yourself."
"True." Lucas laughed softly. "Mm… Alrighty. Maybe some toast? If that's okay with you, of course."
"Yeah, that's fine." Melissa shrugged, starting to untangle herself from his arms. "Whatever's easiest."
"Mmkay, Mel. I'll… I'll go do that." Lucas got to his feet and left the room to go to the kitchen.
When Lucas was gone, Melissa fell back against the pillows, letting out a weak sigh. She stared up at the ceiling, tears already forming at her eyes. "What's wrong with me?" She whispered weakly to herself. Laying there, she did her best to collect herself. But only found herself wanting to cry more. "Stop it. You know he'll be worried about you…" She muttered to herself, sitting up on the bed. At that she sucked in a deep breath before sliding off the bed. Forcing herself to breath normally, and calm down in general, she quietly made her way out of his room to follow him into the kitchen.
Lucas was almost done with the toast by the time Melissa came down. "Hey, Mel… what do you like on your toast?" He asked, pulling out a very dull knife that he could trust himself with to spread butter, jam, or whatever else Melissa might want.
"Butter is fine." Melissa replied softly, sitting down at the table. She curled up on the chair, pulling her knees up to her chest. She gently set her chin on top of her legs, looking over to where he stood. "Thanks, Lucas."
"Mhmm… you doing okay?" Lucas asked as he put some butter onto Melissa's toast. He came over to the table and slid her plate to her.
Melissa shrugged, pulling her plate closer to herself. "I guess…" She whispered, slowly eating what was given to her.
Lucas sighed and started eating his own toast. "Anything I can do?" He asked softly.
Melissa shook her head, tucking loose hair behind her ear. “No… I um- no, you can’t.” She mumbled, eating slowly. “Well- I um, how are you doing?”
"I'm… okay." Lucas sighed again and took another bite of his toast. "As good as I can be at the moment."
Melissa nodded, reaching to hold onto his free hand. “Well… um, if there’s anything I can do to help…” She whispered, continuing to slowly eat.
"Mm… I wanna help you, though…" Lucas laced his fingers with Melissa's.
“I- I’m fine. You don’t have to help me with anything.” Melissa insisted, slowly continuing to eat.
"But you shouldn't just have to help me all the time… you need help too, and I wanna make sure you're feeling okay…"
“But right now I’m worried about you. You said you didn’t sleep great, and you had another nightmare this morning.” Melissa insisted, looking up at him.
"Yeah, I had a few… but that's not that important…" Lucas sighed softly. "I have nightmares all the time. What's up with you?"
Melissa wanted to argue further, but grew quiet when he continued to insist. “It’s nothing, Lucas… I’m fine.”
"Mm…" Lucas rested his head on his hand and sighed softly. "I have a feeling you're not telling me the truth, though…"
Melissa pulled her hand away from him, hugging her knees closer to her chest. "I don't know what's wrong, Lu. Even if there was something, I- I don't know what it is. I- I just… I don't know."
"Can you maybe try to explain it? I wanna help you, Melissa… I know I'm not the only one who's struggling…"
“I- I don’t know…” She whispered, hiding her face from him. “It’s… it’s the same as yesterday. It just- it’s worse. I… I feel really weighted down. And- and I feel like crying, a lot. And… I feel numb, and just overall terrible… I- I don’t understand. But… but then it just goes away. No explanation. And I feel fine.”
Lucas held tighter to Melissa and closed his eyes. "Do you feel… uhm… empty? Like everything is heavy all the time? Like you can't even be bothered to get up sometimes?"
