"Yeah…" Rowan sighed as well and rested his head back on Matthew's chest. "People don't generally treat me well. I'm easy to take advantage of."
"Yeah…" Rowan sighed as well and rested his head back on Matthew's chest. "People don't generally treat me well. I'm easy to take advantage of."
"Well, I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen anymore," Matthew said softly. He rested his second hand on Rowan's head, sighing gently.
"Thanks, Matthew…" Rowan leaned into Matthew's hand a bit. "It's so different here… do people ever even break the law? What are the laws here?"
"Sometimes, but only under certain circumstances. No stealing, no murdering, things like that. They usually vary slightly from place to place." Matthew hummed softly, his thing running over Rowan's hair a bit.
"Hopefully those two are always illegal everywhere…" Rowan sighed softly. "People break the law all the time where I'm from. Especially the stealing… there's so many pickpockets in New York."
"They are." Matthew fell silent, holding Rowan close. "I just… How are people so greedy?"
"Capitalism, I guess. Like I said, money is really important where I'm from. Everyone's just looking for more of it."
Matthew shook his head a bit, holding Rowan closer.
"Your world is strange…" Still, Matthew laid down, tired, holding Rowan close.
"Yeah, I guess it is to you… but that's all I've ever known. To me, your world is strange." Rowan sighed.
"True, true…" Martha chuckled faintly. "I suppose anything we aren't used to it strange."
"Yeah…" Rowan huddled a little closer and yawned. "We're always a little worried… there's lots of bad things happening on the news."
Matthew shook his head slightly, tucking Rowan under his chin as they talked.
"It's not like that here. You rarely here about anything bad happening, and it's usually only accidents."
Rowan nodded a bit as he yawned again. "Mm… you always hear about school shootings and murders and terrorism stuff and all sorts of things… I try not to watch the news too much because it usually just upsets me."
Matthew's arms tightened around Rowan a bit, the best tucked safely away between them.
"I…" He shook his head. He didn't even have the words for this.
"That's the kind of stuff that my society is desensitized to… I just wish there was more I could do about it."
Matthew tucked his wings tightly around them both, eyes closed a moment as he processed.
"I just… I'm sorry, but there are a lot of fucked up humans…"
"I know… there really are…" Rowan sighed shakily with his eyes closed as well. "And I don't have the means to do anything about it."
Matthew gently rubbed Rowan's back, hearing the shake in his voice.
"You can be a good person," Matthew said gently. "You didn't give in, or change yourself."
"I guess so…" Rowan sighed again as he huddled up against Matthew. "B-But hey, I could get away from it all by moving here…"
"You can…" Matthew nuzzled Rowan's head a bit, eyes closing again. "Goodnight, Rowan," he finally said, tired.
"G'night, Matthew…" Rowan yawned and soon drifted off to sleep in Matthew's arms, still a bit shaky.
Matthew held Rowan close as the man trembled, eventually falling asleep.
Rowan was still asleep in the morning when Matthew awoke, the nest held securely in his arms.
Matthew was quiet for a bit, laying with Rowan. Finally, he started to pull away a bit, careful of Rowan and the nest.
Rowan stirred a bit when Matthew moved, but stayed asleep for the time being, keeping the nest safely near himself.
Matthew stoked the fire back up to make breakfast. They hadn't had the berries last night as planned, so he did them for breakfast, humming slightly as the sweet scent filled the camp.
Rowan stirred again a few minutes later and opened his eyes. He yawned a bit, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. "…Matthew…?"
Matthew looked over when he heard his name, smiling.
"Good morning, Rowan! I'm making breakfast now, it's almost done." He hummed softly, offering a smile that was sweeter than the smell of the berries.
"Mm… you're awfully chipper for this early in the morning…" Rowan yawned again and moved over to join Matthew by the fire.
"Yes, I suppose so." Matthew chuckled a bit. "How are the eggs?" he slid the berries onto two slices of bread, offering one to Rowan.
