"Yeah… I-I can talk to him, if you really want to know." Melissa offered, studying the back of her free hand.
"Yeah… I-I can talk to him, if you really want to know." Melissa offered, studying the back of her free hand.
"Thanks, Mel… when do you think you'll be able to visit next?" Lucas asked, looking up at Melissa.
"I dunno… I think I have Thursday off of work, so maybe after school?" Melissa offered softly, hesitantly looking up at him.
"Sounds good to me, Mel. You know I love you a lot, right?" He asked, a gentle smile toying with the corners of his lips.
Melissa nodded after a split second of hesitation, giving a light smile. "Yeah… I love you, too."
"I'm gonna try my best to get better so I can get out of this place, Mel. Okay?" He pulled Melissa close to kiss her.
Taken by surprise, it took her a moment to process what he had said. Melissa kissed him softly in return. "I don't want you to push yourself, Lu."
"I know, I know… but I know I really need to be putting in the effort too. I can't just sit here and do nothing and still expect to get better."
"I-I guess so… you promise to not go too far?" Melissa asked softly, starting to play with his hair. "I don't want you to rush yourself to get better. I want you to do it right the first time, otherwise you'll be right back here."
"I'll try my best, Mel…" Lucas leaned into Melissa's touch with a soft sigh. "I want to be able to be there for you when you need me."
"And you'll be able to, when you're better. It'll only be worse for us both if you have to come back." Melissa whispered, kissing his forehead.
"I know…" Lucas sighed again and he closed his eyes as he relaxed into Melissa's touch. "I'll try to do it the right way, Mel. Even though that probably means I'll have to be here a few months…"
"I can hold myself together if it means you'll come back for good. I don't want you worrying about me, alright?" Melissa asked him softly, taking his hands and kissing his knuckles.
Lucas nodded a bit. "Alright… as long as I still get to see you sometimes, I'll be alright. I like getting to visit with you."
Melissa gave him a gentle smile, nodding to his request. "Of course. I don't think I could not visit you. It's been hard enough as is." She sighed weakly, squeezing his good hand gently.
"Yeah… I've really missed you, Mel." Lucas gently kissed Melissa's hand and sighed. "I don't know how long it'll take for my hand to work well again…"
"Can you even hold things with it?" Melissa asked softly, carefully tracing into his other hand. "Or did you damage it too badly?"
"Um… I can like, let things rest in it if that makes sense? But I can't exactly grip things tight enough to really hold them."
"Can you feel anything?" Melissa asked, wondering if the tracing was even noticeable to him. "Or is your hand like… numb?"
"Yeah, I can feel things… I can't feel it as well as my other hand, but I can still feel it." Lucas smiled weakly.
Melissa nodded a little, looking up at him. "That's good, at least." She hummed, leaning down to kiss his hand once again.
"Mhmm… I really hope that I can get it to work properly again so that I can still play baseball…"
"Make sure you're doing any and all exercises they're giving you, then." Melissa hummed softly. "I'm sure it'll work perfectly after a little bit of work."
"I hope you're right, Mel. I don't want to be out of baseball forever because of this…" Lucas sighed again.
Melissa gave a gentle look, sighing softly. "I can't promise anything, but I can always hope I'm right." She whispered, still smiling.
Lucas nodded, fidgeting nervously with his good hand. "It still hurts sometimes, but I'm on a fair amount of meds…"
Melissa nodded as well, carefully pulling her hand away. "I wish I could go back an fix this… then none of this would be happening. And you wouldn't be in pain."
"I know… I wish I could too, Mel. It's really all my fault… also the meds, I guess. I don't think I'd have done it if I wasn't on those…"
“Yeah… it’s not exactly your fault. Your brain kinda shut off, didn’t it?” Melissa asked softly, looking up to him.
"In a way, I guess… I don't know exactly how antidepressants work, especially if they're the wrong ones in effect during a panic attack."
