"Not much," Melissa started, flicking her gaze down to the table. "Just told them you were in the hospital, and wouldn't be back for a while. They were concerned, but didn't ask questions at my vagueness."
"Not much," Melissa started, flicking her gaze down to the table. "Just told them you were in the hospital, and wouldn't be back for a while. They were concerned, but didn't ask questions at my vagueness."
Lucas nodded a bit. "I'm sure that some of them connected the dots… they've seen me with bandages on my arms before."
Melissa nodded as well, flicking her gaze up to him. "Or they just assume what I said was true. But I wasn't specific for a reason- so I wasn't, y'know, straight up lying."
"I know, I know…" Lucas sighed and held onto Melissa's hand again. "Any other news I should know?"
"Uhhh… Homecoming is this week, I'm pretty sure. I don't actually know." Melissa shrugged, looking up at him. "It may have already happened. I never paid much attention, to be honest. I'm not participating in the event."
"Right… I wish I could go with you. Or… have gone if it already happened. It could've been fun, Mel."
Melissa gave a soft look, a little smile pulling up. "There's always prom. And I think there's probably some cheesy Valentine's Day thing." She hummed, squeezing his hand.
"Yeah, true." Lucas smiled weakly. "I don't have a suit, though, so I guess I'd have to rent one for the night."
Melissa's smile softened, picturing him wearing one. "You'd be pretty handsome…" She complimented softly, pulling his hand up to her lips.
Lucas flushed lightly and looked down at the table. "I dunno… I guess so. I think you'd look really nice in a fancy dress.
Melissa glanced up at him, holding her face in his hand. "Mmm… I'd probably wear a light blue one… I've always liked the way I looked in blue…" She mumbled, leaning into his hand.
"I think you would look wonderful, darling." Lucas gently kissed Melissa's hand. "I love you, alright?"
Melissa smiled softly, studying his face. "I love you too… I honestly don't know what I'd do without you…"
"I know… me either. That's why I'm still going, love. I'm always going to try my best to be here for you."
"And I want to be here for you. You can talk to me whenever you need it." Melissa hummed, holding her other hand out to him.
Lucas nodded a bit, shakily raising his injured arm to lay his hand on Melissa's. "I really love you, Mel…"
"I really love you, too." Melissa whispered, leaning down to kiss his hand softly. "You mean everything to me."
"Mm… ditto." Lucas sighed softly. He glanced up at the clock. "Um… anything else important you can tell me in the five minutes we have left?"
Melissa paused for a minute, thinking. Though she seemed to either think of something, or remember it as her eyes lit up. "Oh, right! I um… I brought this," She started, pulling her hand back and pulling a envelope from her back pocket. "Read it… read it when you feel lonely."
"Oh! Um… okay. Thank you, Mel." Lucas tucked the envelope in his own pocket. "I will… um… I'll do that. I love you, Mel."
Melissa gave him a weak smile, pushing up out of her seat. She leaned over and gently kissed his forehead. "Can I hug you, or is that not allowed?"
"I dunno if it's allowed or not, but I could do with one." Lucas smiled weakly in return. "I'm willing to give it a go."
Melissa smiled softly, slowly wrapping her arms around his neck. "I could use one, too, to be honest. I never got one before you left… a real one, that is."
"Yeah… sorry about that…" Lucas hugged Melissa as tightly as he was able and buried his face in her shoulder. "I've really missed you…"
"I've missed you, too…" Melissa mumbled, kissing his cheek softly. "But I'm sure you can get through this…"
"I'll try my best…" Lucas gently returned the kiss and hugged Melissa until he was told he had to return to his room. "Until next time, darling…"
"I love you…" Melissa whispered, kissing his forehead. "Be safe. I'll come back as soon as possible."
Lucas waved and allowed himself to be led back to his room. As soon as he was in there, he pulled out the letter Melissa had given him and opened it.
It wasn't very strong, but the soft scent of Melissa's perfume seemed to linger over the paper when he unfolded it. The letter was written in neat cursive, blue ink giving more color to the folded lined-paper.
Hey Lu,
I know this isn't the same as being here. Nowhere near it, at all. But it's the best solution I can think of. I know it's silly, but talking about you writing letters to me got me thinking. Why couldn't I do the same? As I'm in a bit of a rush to come see you, it won't be very long. But at least it's something.
I honestly don't have much to say. I miss you. I love you. Life honestly sucks without you- and it's only been a week or so. It's so hard not being able to meet you up at the clearing, and curl up for a nap on a nice day. It's just not the same.
But maybe when you get back, we could spend hours together. We could go anywhere and everywhere. The beach, the sunflower field, the clearing. We could have the best day ever, topped off with ice cream. Cody could tag along too…
Alright- I'm rambling now… I love you, darling. You mean a lot to me. I can't wait to get to see you.
Lots of love,
Mel <3
Lucas sighed shakily as he read over the letter, taking in the words before he rooted around for a paper and pen to write one in return.
Dear Mel,
I'm so sorry that I can't be with you in person. Also about everything that's happened recently. Through everything else that's fucked up, you're really the one thing keeping me going. Keep me updated on the Cody situation if you can. It would be great for me to be able to have him here with me. We can go to the clearing and get ice cream and whatever else you want as soon as I get back, okay? I'll stay strong for you, love, I just need you to stay strong for me as well. I don't really know what else to say, but just know that I love you more than I could ever say.
Missing you terribly,
Lucas
He didn't have any envelopes, so he just folded another piece of paper into one and stuck the letter inside. He'd figure out how to get it to Melissa later.
