“I hope it goes well, if you do…” Melissa told him softly, kissing his knuckles. “I love you…”
“I hope it goes well, if you do…” Melissa told him softly, kissing his knuckles. “I love you…”
"I love you too…" Lucas looked up at Melissa weakly. "I wish I could just go back home with you…"
“I’d take you if I could.” Melissa mumbled, lifting her head. “Maybe now you’ll stay with me at the clearing. We can hide there, so no one can find you.”
Lucas smiled weakly. "I can't, Mel… they'd get mad, and I really need to be here, apparently." He sighed a bit.
“But you wouldn’t be so miserable. We could be happy together- we wouldn’t have to worry about anything.” Melissa insisted, sitting up. “You would never have to come back here…”
"Melissa… I'm still so fucked up mentally. It wouldn't be safe. I still couldn't just be happy, Mel." Lucas sighed.
Melissa sighed weakly, her shoulders dropping. “I-I know… I can always dream…” She mumbled, resting her chin on her one hand.
"And it would probably also be illegal." Lucas smiled weakly and kissed Melissa's hand. "I don't think you're allowed to take me out of here."
“But Lu…” Melissa whined softly, pouting to him. “You’re miserable… I miss you- I want you to come home…”
"I know, and I feel the same way, but this place is supposedly gonna help me get better." Lucas sighed.
Melissa groaned a bit, dropping her head back down on the table. “It’s so frustrating. I want you to get better, but to be better, you have to deal with this.
"Mhmm. That's just how it is, Mel, and there's not much we can do about it." Lucas watched her quietly.
She kept her face hidden, forehead pressed up against the wood. “It’s not fairrrr… can’t I stay with you..?”
"I don't think you'd like it here very much, Mel. I'm also pretty sure that's not allowed." Lucas weakly ran his fingers through his hair.
“But I’d be with you- and I wouldn’t have to be at school. Or work. Or any of the other stuff that’s stressful.” Melissa mumbled, lifting her head back up.
"I know, Mel, but still… this place isn't some vacation to get away from work or school. This is a mental hospital for fucked up people like me who need to be monitored because they can't be trusted not to kill themselves if they're left alone."
"I know it's not a vacation, Lu. One look at your face tells me that." Melissa snapped a bit, face showing frustration. "But I'd rather be miserable with you, than without you."
"I only say that because the way you're talking about it suggests you feel otherwise. I'm not here because I don't want to go to school or work, Mel." Lucas whispered weakly, his eyes stinging with tears. "I really do want to do those things. I wish I could just live a normal life like everyone else. I don't want to be here, but I need to be because I can't be trusted to live a life where I'm not monitored constantly."
"I know you don't want to be here, Lucas. I know it sucks here, and I know you want to leave. I want you to leave, and come back home. But you can't, and I know that." Melissa retorted, hearing the words that had come out of her mouth a few seconds too late. She cringed, clenching her jaw tightly. "Sorry…" She mumbled, pulling her hand back to hold her face.
Lucas sighed softly and ran his fingers through his hair. "Melissa… please…" He looked up at Melissa weakly. "Just stop talking about it. I can't leave. I really don't have a choice here, and neither do you."
Melissa nodded, keeping quiet. She drew one of her knees up to her chest, resting it on the edge of the chair. She put her chin on her knee, not saying anything else.
"Please don't feel bad, Mel…" Lucas whispered weakly. "I don't want to leave you on an argument. You have to go soon."
Melissa shrugged a little, looking up at him. "I guess so…" She mumbled, picking at the folds in her jeans.
Lucas looked up at Melissa as well, fidgeting nervously. "Are… are you okay…?" He asked in a soft voice.
Melissa shrugged once again, sighing weakly. "I guess so. This whole thing is bugging me, to be honest. But you said to stop talking about it, so we won't talk about it."
"I just… I feel like talking about it is upsetting both of us. We should talk about something happier."
"I know- I'm being kind of ridiculous about this. I'm getting worked up over nothing." Melissa sighed weakly, sliding her hand back across the table. "And if you wanna talk about something happy, I've got nothing right now."
Lucas sighed softly, tapping his foot on the ground again. "Nothing at all? Because I haven't exactly got anything…"
"I- not really…" Melissa sighed softly, holding her hand out to him. "I… your team won the game last night. If you care."
"At least they're getting along without me, yeah? What all did you tell them? And coach?" He asked.
