It was a little bit longer before Melissa showed up, changed into her uniform for work. She was adjusting her hair as she turned to corner, smiling when she caught sight of Lucas.
Lucas breathed a quiet sigh of relief when Melissa showed up. "Oh, thank God… I was so worried when I couldn't find you." He kissed her softly and hugged her.
Melissa laughed softly, kissing him in return. "Why? You didn't think they were bugging me again, did you?" She asked softly, pursing her lips a little.
"Well, kinda… and I thought maybe you'd gone to the nurse, but you weren't there…" Lucas hugged Melissa more tightly.
"I didn't mean to worry you, love. I was just getting changed for work." Melissa told him softly, not bothering to try and pull back. In all honesty, the hug was much appreciated and needed.
"Right, right… sorry for being so paranoid, love." Lucas reluctantly released Melissa and stepped out of her way.
"You don't need to apologize." Melissa insisted with a smile, kissing him softly. "There was a good chance it could have happened."
Lucas gently returned the kiss and stuck close to Melissa. "R-Right… I love you a lot, Melissa. You know that?"
"Of course I do." Melissa smiled, taking his hand and wrapping it around her waist. "And you know I love you?"
Lucas nodded, holding Melissa close to himself. "Sorry for being so clingy today, darling…" He murmured.
"It's really alright. I don't mind it at all— it's honestly nice." Melissa hummed, resting her head on his shoulder.
Lucas nodded a bit. "I should probably head to practice soon… but I'm really glad that you're okay."
Melissa sighed weakly, leaning into him. "Mm, probably. But can it wait, for just a minute?" She asked softly, keeping close. "I'd feel better if we just hugged for a minute."
"Yeah, it can wait…" Lucas hugged Melissa again and held her close, resting his head on her shoulder.
Melissa sighed softly, burying her face into his shoulder. “I love you… so much.” She mumbled a little, starting to pull back.
"I love you too…" Lucas kissed Melissa softly when she pulled away. "I should get going now. Be safe, darling." He waved and walked down the hallway.
Melissa waved in return, giving him a soft smile. "You be safe at practice! Don't push yourself too much!" She called out after him, before turning back to her locker.
"I won't!" Lucas called back before heading out the doors to the locker rooms. He changed into his uniform and went out to practice.
(Skip to when everybody gets home?)
(Mm, probably lol)
It was getting dangerously close to ten o'clock when Melissa finally got home, trying to be quiet. She assumed Lucas would have crashed after a long day, and she herself planned to do the same. After a shower… and homework.
Lucas was already asleep by the time Melissa returned, Cody curled up against him. The puppy was out cold and didn't even stir when Melissa came in. After about an hour, Lucas started stirring and whining, and eventually woke with a start. He couldn't focus at all, his mind spinning and spiraling down until he was practically gone. "It's all my fault…" He whispered weakly, tears rolling down his pale cheeks. "Everything's my own fucking fault, I c-can't… do this… all I ever do is make everyone else suffer…" He got to his feet and ran to the kitchen, rifling through the drawers in a panic.
(Trigger Warning for any stalkers who might be here)
Mr. Brennahan was up on his feet in a panic, his head still foggy. And with the noise, Melissa was up as well in a matter of seconds. The two looked between each other, and the puppy before letting things click. "Lucas!" Melissa cried out in a panic, rushing past her father and down the stairs in ten seconds flat. Mr. Brennahan was quick to follow, Cody trailing along after the two.
Melissa was frozen in the kitchen, her face completely pale. She had practically stopped breathing, before letting a scream of pure horror out. Mr. Brennahan felt his own heart stop in his chest, before swallowing down his rising sickness. The sight had Melissa in a sobbing panic her heart pounding hard in his chest. "W-what do we do!?" She cried out, getting the attention of her mother. The woman was down stairs not long after the two, seeming incredibly annoyed to be up. "Lucia, go call an ambulance. Now." Mr. Brennahan told her sternly, slightly pushing Melissa out of the room. "Honey, please, go back to your room." He told her, trying to have one less thing to deal with.
When given the instructions, she hesitated before catch a glimpse of Lucas on the floor. As soon as she had, she nodded and quickly went to do as she was told. But Melissa didn't. She tried to relax, not wanting to leave Lucas. "Dad, please."
"Melissa, I mean it. Go back to bed." Mr. Brennahan told her sternly, before turning back to Lucas.
With the ambulance's arrival, they got Lucas to the hospital in a matter of minutes, Melissa having been left behind. Mr. Brennahan had gone with Lucas, being the closest thing to a legal guardian as the boy had.
Lucas was still completely unconscious the next day. His arm had been stitched up and heavily bandaged, and the doctors informed Mr. Brennahan that he would likely need a lot of physical therapy in order for it to be able to function well again. Cody hadn't left his side at all, frequently whimpering worriedly at him in hopes that he would wake up. The doctors said that he could be unconscious for a couple of days at most, but that they planned on having him officially admitted into a mental hospital as soon as he woke up. As Lucas didn't have a legal guardian, he had no choice but to be there for three days at least. After that, he would have to accept further treatment of his own volition.
With the news given to him, he felt even worse. There was nothing he could do about it— and even if he was given the choice, he'd feel just as bad. He would have to make him go. There was no getting around it anymore.
Mr. Brennahan had stayed home all night, never calling home considering it was getting so late. He hadn't gotten any news until almost 2am, and doubted the girls at home would still be up. So with the delivery of the news the next morning, Melissa didn't take it very well.
She had gone to the hospital, refusing to leave Lucas's side after she saw his face.
(Do we want to skip until he's conscious once more?)
(Probably yeah lol)
Lucas didn't wake up until two days later, and he seemed exhausted when he did. His face was pale and his eyes were dull and empty. He could hardly remember what he'd done just a couple of nights ago until he looked down at his arm. God dammit… they're going to lock me up now… I can't go there… He panicked and tore out his IV before trying to run, but he couldn't get very far before he collapsed again, still conscious, but dazed and scared.
Melissa was curled up in a chair next to him, half asleep. When he dropped onto the ground she jolted fully awake, looking just as confused as he was. Slowly she realized where he was, pushing out of the chair. She dropped down on her knees next to him— not just because her leg had gone numb— seeming to be in a panicked state. "Oh my god, are you okay!?" She asked him weakly, holding his face in both of her hands.
Lucas whimpered quietly and pressed himself up against the cot, shaking violently. "I-I don't wanna go to the mental hospital, p-please…" He whispered, tears stinging his wide eyes. "I'm s-sorry, please… I d…. I d-didn't mean to… I c-couldn't think and the meds were making the thoughts worse and I just woke up from the nightmares and I just can't!" He slipped under the cot again to hide.
Melissa watched him, feeling awful. "L-Lu…" She whispered, attempting to go under with him. Carefully she held a hand to him, tears stinging at her eyes. "Please, I don't want you to go either, but… but you're hurting yourself. Really, really bad. I-I can't keep letting this happen to you…" She whispered weakly, trying her best not to cry for his sake. He didn't need that right now.
Lucas shied away more so Melissa couldn't reach him, sobbing quietly into his arms. "I-I don't wanna go… I c-can't, Mel, please…" He whispered weakly, tightening his grip on himself with his good arm. "W-What if they can't stop me either? I… I dunno if they'll let me keep Cody with me… if it weren't for him, I would have died last night…" He whispered, his voice faltering and breaking.
“Lu…” Melissa whispered weakly. She didn’t even bother to mention the fact that it had been a couple of days he had been asleep. “Darling, I know you don’t. I know you want to stay, and I know you’re worried. But one of these days, something worse is going to happen. We’re not going to be able to help you- they can. They’ll help you, Lu…”
Lucas hiccuped weakly and pressed himself up against the wall, staying well out of Melissa's reach. "P-Please… don't… d-don't do this, Mel…" He whispered, shaking violently. "I'll be stuck there for so long… I might not even get to see you every day. There's only certain hours that you're allowed to visit…"
