When Mr. Brennahan had walked off back into the kitchen, it was pretty quiet for a little bit. Melissa leaned in to her father's embrace, trying to relax while he held her close. "You feeling any better?" Mr. Brennahan asked her softly, rubbing circles into her back. She only nodded in response, starting to rub at her eyes. "Do you want to go sit in the living room with Lucas?" Melissa nodded when asked, pulling back.
"I… I love you." She mumbled a little pulling up a small smile. Mr. Brennahan smiled in return, kissing her forehead. "I love you too, Melissa." With that said, he let her go so she could go join Lucas in the other room.
"Melissa! Are you okay? Is there anything I can do to help?" Lucas asked worriedly when Melissa came into the living room. He stood up and hugged her tightly, holding her close to himself so she would feel secure.
Melissa was taken by a bit of surprise, but a light smile pulled up. "I'm alright, Lucas. I just hit my breaking point, that's all." She told him in a light tone, loosely wrapping her arms around him. "Mm… but if you keep holding me, I don't think I'd mind."
Lucas nodded and gently brought Melissa down to the couch, still hugging her. Cody came up and flopped down into Melissa's lap, whining happily when he saw her.
Melissa smiled weakly, leaning up against Lucas and gently petting Cody. She was still sniffling a bit, but wasn't noticeably crying at the moment. "How was your smoothie?"
"Good, thank you… did you have one? Are you feeling alright?" Lucas still seemed worried, but was a little reassured by how Melissa seemed to be doing better.
"Not yet… but honestly, I needed a minute." Melissa told him softly, curling up closer to him. "It's even sitting on the counter, I just forgot to grab it. I should probably get up to grab it."
"Not if you need a minute… you can stay here as long as you need. Just make sure you drink it at some point, yeah?" Lucas gently kissed the top of Melissa's head.
Melissa nodded softly, tipping her head back to look up at him. She had a little smile up still, curling up a little closer to him. "You're the best… I honestly don't deserve you."
"I don't deserve you, Mel…" Lucas held Melissa close to himself and sighed, closing his eyes. He really just wanted her to feel better at this point.
"Mm, I guess we both got lucky then." Melissa hummed softly, still softly petting Cody in her lap. "I really do love you, a lot, Lucas."
"I love you too, Mel…" Lucas kissed Melissa's forehead softly before resting his head on hers. "You're feeling a bit better?"
"Mhmm… thanks for being here, when I need you." Melissa whispered, settling down even more into her place. She really was feeling better by now, just happy he was here.
"Of course, Mel. I'll try to always be here if you need me, and you're always welcome to text or call if we're not in the same area."
Melissa nodded a little, keeping up a fond smile. "And the same goes for you… I'm always willing to help you, if you need me."
Lucas nodded as well and sighed. "Do you want to go sit outside, or are you happy here?" He asked softly.
"Right now, I'm content here. It's also probably not a good idea for you to go outside for a little while, anyways." Melissa pointed out in a soft tone, lifting her head up just a bit.
"True…" Lucas kept his eyes closed as he stuck close to Melissa. "Sorry about that, by the way. That probably didn't help your stress levels."
"No, not really. But I don't blame you in the slightest." Melissa smiled softly, and kissed his cheek. "So you shouldn't either."
Lucas nodded a bit. "It's really hot out… I don't think I'd have collapsed if it were cooler outside, honestly."
"Probably not… I hope it doesn't rain. You've got your game on Friday, and I don't think you want to play on a muddy field." Melissa hummed, starting to play with his hair.
"Yeah… and it would be humid, too." Lucas sighed and leaned into Melissa's touch. "I don't do well when it's super humid and hot."
"Clearly," Melissa laughed softly, taking his hand and kissing the back of it. "I'll make sure to bring you extra water and snacks if it does rain. I don't want you passing out on the field."
Lucas smiled weakly as he looked up at Melissa. "Thanks, Mel. Usually we take more breaks when it's really hot anyway."
"Mm, then you'll actually be able to take a minute to cool down." Melissa smiled lightly in return, kissing his cheek again. "I know you're suppose to be playing a game, but you need to take care of yourself."
"I know, I know… hopefully this will become a less frequent occurrence soon now that I'm regularly eating and stuff."
“Mhmm, it shouldn’t be too long. Hopefully at least.” Melissa hummed in a light tone, stretching her legs out. “I’m gonna grab my smoothie real quick. You need anything while I’m up?”
"No, I'm alright…" Lucas pulled Cody into his lap so that Melissa could stand, petting the puppy gently.
"Alright," Melissa told him softly, leaning over to kiss his forehead. "I want the puppy back, after I finish my smoothie though."
"Alright, alright." Lucas returned the kiss and smiled softly, pulling Cody up against his chest and holding him close.
