"Yeah, but most of them know you well enough to understand." Melissa offered with a shrug. "It's your choice."
"Yeah, but most of them know you well enough to understand." Melissa offered with a shrug. "It's your choice."
"I-I dunno… I don't wanna make anyone uncomfortable or anything…" Lucas sighed softly.
Melissa nodded a little, pushing the back door open for him. "You're part of anyone. If I just offer cake, I don't think anyone will think twice about it."
"Alright… we'll try that, then…" Lucas sighed, walking into the house after Melissa. "It's probably for the best."
"Then it's settled. Once we get in the kitchen, I'll announce it to anyone who's in the living room. I don't think most anybody is in the there." Melissa mumbled mostly to herself, giving him a soft smile.
Lucas nodded a bit in understanding. "Alright, love. Thank you." He headed into the kitchen with Melissa.
"Of course, Lu." Melissa hummed before pecking his cheek. Leaning up against the frame into the living room, she noted the few people sitting there and talking. "We're about to get cake, if you guys want to head on back."
Lucas stayed in the kitchen, fidgeting a bit as he looked around. Soon, the few people in the living room trailed into the kitchen as well.
One or two waved, and told him happy birthday as they made their way to the back door. "You wanna grab paper plates, from off the counter?" Melissa asked lightly, pulling the fridge open.
Lucas thanked them and nodded, doing as he was told and soon returning with paper plates.
Pulling the plate with cake on it out of the fridge, Melissa glanced over to Lucas with a bright smile. "Would you also mind grabbing a knife?"
"Um… sure. What size?" Lucas asked, heading over to the knife drawer and looking through it.
"Medium sized, I guess. There should be one with a black handle and a red band near the bottom, that's the perfect size. If you can't find it, it's no big deal." Melissa instructed, watching him when he started to look for the knife.
"Alright." Lucas found the knife Melissa had described and handed it over to her. "Here you are, love."
Melissa adjusted how she was holding the cake so she could take the knife. "Thank you." She smiled back, leaning over to peck his cheek.
"No problem, Mel." Lucas stuck close to her and watched as she cut the cake, humming softly to himself.
"You want the first piece?" Melissa asked, glancing up from the cake.
"Um… sure?" Lucas grabbed a plate for himself and got a slice of cake. "Thanks, Mel."
"No problem, love." Melissa hummed, pausing what she was doing so she could think. "Forks. I need to grab forks." She mumbled to herself.
Lucas grabbed some plastic forks from a box on the counter and brought them over next to the cake. "There."
"Oh- thank you." Melissa hummed, huffing a little. "I think I just need to carry this stuff outside… can you get the door for me?"
"Yeah, of course, Mel." Lucas opened the door and held it open for Melissa.
After gathering everything, she headed out the back door. "Thanks, Lucas." She whispered, setting everything down on one of the tables on the back deck.
"No problem." Lucas sat down under a tree in the backyard and started quietly eating his slice of cake.
Melissa glanced up, sighing softly as he sat by himself. Quietly she plated slices of cake for people to grab, before starting off the deck. "Cake is up there, for anyone who wants it." She called out before coming up to Lucas, leaning against the tree. "You alright?"
"Mhmm. I'm fine. Just wanted a little bit of quiet in the crowd is all…" Lucas took a bite of his cake and sighed. "The cake is nice."
"Happy to hear that…" She replied in a soft tone, hugging herself. "You want me to leave you be? I can let you have some alone time."
"No, no, you can stay if you want to." Lucas took another bite of his cake, toying with his fork a bit.
“You sure? I really don’t want to bug you, if you want a couple minutes alone.” Melissa insisted, not sitting down yet.
"I'm sure, Mel. I like hanging out with you." Lucas smiled softly as he looked up at Melissa.
