(Oh yeah, totally! Why would they not?)
"I-I don't have to deal with you…" Melissa insisted, feeling tears stinging at her eyes. "I don't see it like that. I care about you, I do this because I love you."
(Oh yeah, totally! Why would they not?)
"I-I don't have to deal with you…" Melissa insisted, feeling tears stinging at her eyes. "I don't see it like that. I care about you, I do this because I love you."
"P-Please don't cry, Mel, I… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…" Lucas's eyes stung with tears as well at the sight of Melissa's.
With a clenched jaw, she swallowed them back. She didn't want him to start crying, so she couldn't. "You don't have to be sorry… I just… need you relax."
Lucas nodded and rubbed at his own tears, sighing shakily. "I'm trying, but… it's… not really working…"
Glancing over to where her dad had been standing, she noted that he had walked away. "Well, we can't go back to the clearing… but is there anything else that calms you down?"
"Um… I dunno… y-you know the hair thing, and… uh… sometimes drawing helps?" Lucas shrugged and sighed again.
"Do you want me to get you some paper?" Melissa asked, scooting closer and resting her head on his shoulder. "Or just sit here?"
"U-Um… anything is fine Mel…" Lucas rested his head on Melissa's.
Nodding a bit, she kept quiet. Holding on to his hand tightly in her own, she tried to string an explanation for her dad when she got the chance to talk to him. Of course, she didn't want to lie straight to his face.
Lucas just sat silently with Melissa, trying to calm down by relaxing in the quiet. He laced his fingers with Melissa's and clung tightly to her.
"I love you… and I'm sorry." Melissa whispered, sighing weakly. "I shouldn't have kissed you."
"It's okay, I just… it makes me nervous when we're in the house just because of the risk of being seen, you know?"
“Yeah… and… and having my dad see. I just- he wasn’t there. I checked. And then he was.” Melissa huffed a bit, lifting her head up. “Now I have to go talk to him. Eventually at least.”
Lucas nodded and sighed softly. "Uh… if you wanna go talk to him, I can probably manage alone…"
“I don’t really want to. I’ll just wait until later, when you’re more relaxed. It gives me more time to think this through.” She mumbled, yawning a bit. “Or maybe I’ll have to tell him in the morning… I have a feeling it’ll take a while.”
"Yeah… sorry." Lucas sighed weakly and started fidgeting again. "I'm doing the bad thoughts thing again…"
Her mind spaced, and she didn’t know what to do. “I- how bad is it?” Melissa asked him, gently taking his other hand so he could do anything without pulling back.
Lucas sighed and buried his face in Melissa's shoulder. "…Pretty bad… I really don't wanna inconvenience you, though…"
"You won't, I promise. How can I help?" Melissa asked him softly, still holding on to both of his hands. "I don't want you hurting yourself."
"I-I dunno, I just… keep thinking that I should've… let my dad take it too far… and I deserve it, everything he's done to me… it's my fault they died and he's got every right to… to…" Lucas sighed shakily.
Letting go of his hands, she wrapped her arms around his torso with a weak hold. "You don't. You really, really don't. It's not your fault that your mom died. It's not your fault that Claus killed himself. It's not your fault that you're dad is completely mental, and tries to make you think that you deserve this. You don't."
Lucas drew in a shaky breath. "I know, I know, but I can't get it out of my mind… makes me kinda wanna… um… finish the job, I guess…"
"I'm not going to let you… I can't let you." Melissa whispered, holding on to him a little tighter. "I can't lose you. I just… I just can't."
Lucas nodded, tears stinging his eyes again. "I'm sorry, Mel… I'm just such a mess… I'm sorry…"
Melissa sighed softly, rubbing circles into his back. "If you want the truth, yeah, you are a mess. But that's because of your dad putting things into your head. I don't want to admit it, but your life is awful. I can't fix it, and I wish so badly that I could."
"But other people have experienced worse… I should've been able to handle it, but I'm just so weak and I'm always such a burden to you and I'm sorry, Mel…"
Taking in a deep breath, she pulled back so she could see his face when she spoke. "You're anything but weak. If you were weak, you would have been dead by now. Yes, it's true others have experienced worse, but that doesn't matter. Everyone has their weaknesses. Sometimes I think my life sucks. You're allowed to not be okay. You're allowed to be suffering, and in pain. Don't think just because someone has it worse, that you don't have a terrible situation. You do, and it sucks. But we're going to fix it. I promise you, we will."
Lucas looked up at Melissa weakly, the tears rolling down his pale cheeks. He drew in a shaky breath and hugged Melissa tightly. "I love you so much…" He whispered. "And I'm sorry you have to deal with me…"
Burying her face into his shoulder, she held on to him tightly. "I love you… I want to be there for you. I want to help you get better." Melissa whispered, tracing circles into his back.
Lucas nodded a bit. "Thank you, Mel… thank you so much… I really don't deserve you…"
