"Both sound useful," Rowan responded trying to decide. The book story sounded nice considering that it probably meant a lot to Soren. She had a light smile on as she thought between the two spells. Being able to move objects to her would be nice, but she loved gardening and being able to grow plants faster would be nice, "I guess the small objects one would be nice."
"Yeah, they're both very useful, but the small objects one might be easier to practice right now," He agreed, smiling as he tapped the writing and glanced over at her, "It's not very complicated, but first you have to imagine the object you want to bring to you…try that pencil on the table over there for starters."
Rowan nodded in agreement that this was probably the easier spell to learn at the moment. She looked at the writing and studied it for a moment. She then looked over at the pencil and got the image stuck in her head. After taking a deep breath she looked back at the book and began to copy the movements feeling the start of a glowing warmth inside as, with some effort, she got the pencil to come over to her. Rowan looked back to Soren with a pencil smiling.
"That was really good for a first attempt," Soren said, a bright grin on his face, "Nice job." With Rowan holding onto the pencil, the boy focused on a sheet of paper that had been sitting nearby, copying the same movements as the waves of his magic made pulling the piece of paper over very easy. It looked more like the paper shot towards him than he had pulled it, but once it was in his hand it was clear he had been the one to pull the paper to him that fast.
Rowan watched him summon the paper and noticed how easy it was for him. It was just because he had a lot of practice and Rowan would get better with time too. She smiled at him and nodded along, "You make it look so easy. I want to try it again!"
"Go ahead, tey as many times as you want." He smiled and got up, disappearing into his room before coming out with a handful of pencils and pens. Soren quickly scattered them around the main room, then once he sat back down, motioned for her to start. Now she could try as many times as she wanted or until her magic started paying back with exhaustion again.
Rowan smiled as she watched him carefully. She studied one of the pencils she could see before pulling it towards her. Her magic flared up and she grew warm again. It was a bit smoother than the previous time, but she was smiling as she did it. Before she repeated the process again and again each time her magic growing warmer and warmer until it felt like she was burning up just ever so slightly.
"Another important thing is to not overwork yourself," Soren added after a while, feeling her magic in the air whenever it clashed against his waves of magic. Her's was hot, feeling like fire that turned to steam when it made contact with his ocean-like magic. "You should hit a point eventually where it feels like your power spills over in a sense. When it does this, you'll feel a huge surge of power for several minutes but then you'll be burnt out and powerless for anywhere from a month to years. As someone who's just getting into this, you'll be burnt out for around a week, seeing as your magic isn't that strong. The stronger you get though, the higher the consequences."
Rowan nodded and didn’t try to cast the spell again. She didn’t know that magic could spill over, but it might explain why she was starting to feel hot. She didn’t feel tired though, maybe it was that surge? It didn’t matter that much, except maybe not being able to practice. Though everything she was learning and being told tugged at some deep part of her mind. Lost memories maybe? She signed over to Soren, ”Okay. Does spilling over take a physical sense as well? Just curious.”
"It can," He replied, "But before anything physical is able to be felt or seen, you'll be able to sense that you're power is spilling over. It will feel almost like your magic is slowly fading away before the surge comes." Soren shrugged, bringing one of the remaining pencils over to him easily, "Any more questions?"
"Oh, okay. I didn't feel any fading so I should be fine right?" Rowan signed tilting her head just slightly. She watched him bring a pencil to him so easily. She couldn't wait until she could do that.
Soren nodded, smiling, "You should be fine to keep practicing. More than likely, I'll be able to feel your magic fade the same time you do so I'll be able to stop you before anything disastrous happens." He relaxed back on the couch once the pencil was in his hand, fiddling with it and not bringing any more to himself. Rowan needed the practice more than he did.
Rowan nodded as she let herself cool down for a moment. Once she did she began to practice once more bringing pencils to her. She had a smile on and was being careful not to push herself too hard.
He watched carefully, not interrupting the silence so that she could concentrate enough to make things work. Or at least he didn't interrupt for a few minutes. "You're getting better, a lot better," Soren complimented with a smile, "This is a spell that you can do anytime and it'll help train your magic even if you do it one time each day."
Rowan smiled up at him. She figured she had done enough magic practice for the day, at least at his place. She nodded a little glowing at the compliment Soren had given her, "Thank you! I'll be sure to practice when I can."
"Be sure not to hit your limit, and stick to small objects," He replied, twirling his lone pencil between his fingers, "Right now we just need to get your magic to get used to the strain of preforming spells over and over again, that way eventually you can move onto bigger spells." Soren didn't stop smiling as he talked, glancing over at her.
Rowan was smiling absorbing the information he was telling her. The words tugged in the back of her head once more and she shook it off once more ignoring the sensation. She nodded and signed to him, "I'll try not to hit it. Thank you again for agreeing to teach me."
Soren just smiled and nodded, setting the pencil down as he tried to roughly sign back to her. Of course, due to his limited skills, he also said everything he sighed so she could understand. "It's no problem, helping others learn magic is something I've wanted to do for a long time."
Rowan lit up as she watched Soren sign to her. The message was crude, but she understood the message well enough. Him saying it helped get the message across, "Still, thank you so much for agreeing to help me. Do you know others with magic? Is that why you've wanted to teach for a long time? Sorry, just curious."
"I only know of a few others, and yes, they're the reason I want to teach magic." Once again, he talked as he signed, skipping over the words that he didn't know in sign and just speaking them instead, "I want to help more people learn to control their magic so it doesn't become something that no one knows about."
Rowan smiled as she nodded. She pulled her legs up onto the couch so she sat criss-cross. Her hand held her legs before she signed back to him, "That makes a lot of sense. Why is magic so unknown anyway? If more people knew about it wouldn't they use it all the time."
Soren didn't answer for a minute after her next question and just spoke when he finally answered, "It's so unknown because it's dangerous for people that can do magic. The leaders of the country have a tendency to make people that are known for magic use….disappear without a trace." He had a slightly worried look on his face as he glanced up at her, "I know that I should've told you that sooner, and I understand if you decide to forget about your magic again because of that information."
"Oh," Rowan signed after a moment. She, why would the government do that? It seemed cruel and just, stupid. People didn't have control if the had magic or not, but would Rowan stop using magic? She sighed and shook her head a little, "No I want to keep learning. I, I don't know why but using magic feels familiar to me. So I want to keep going."
"Then I'll keep helping you learn," Soren replied, feeling instantly relieved that she didn't seem to want to quit magic, "The only thing you have to remember is to not do magic in public or around anyone that you don't trust with your life." He smiled gently at her after that, pointing to the few remaining pencils. "Try to bring all of them to you, and once you're done we can decide whether to keep going or to call it good."
Rowan nodded a determined look on her face. She gave a moment of thought focusing on all the pencils choosing one to bring to her. It was less of a struggle to bring them to her now than it was earlier. She had a smile on as she brought each pencil to her easily and semi-quickly before looking to Soren with a smile, "How'd I do?"
He nodded, watching her with a smile, "That was really good, you're already getting better. How is your magic doing? Want to try one more spell or just stick with that one for now?" The book of spells hadn't moved from his lap as he talked, sitting on the same page he had been at before. Soren could easily teach her as many spells as she could handle for the day, but he wouldn't do anything she didn't agree to. She was in control of what they did next.
"I think I can learn another spell," Rowan signed back at him. She thought she could learn at least one more spell before she had to go. After a moment of thought, she added on to her idea, "Maybe that plant spell you talked about earlier?"
"I can show you the movements for that one, but I don't think I'll be able to actually do it in here," Soren said with a tiny smile, "I don't have a pot or anything to let the plant sprout." He was silent for a moment before his smile grew and he laughed softly, "I actually remembered I can grow it on my hand so you can see that it works. It's the same as using the spell on soil, but it does take a little extra magic."
Rowan nodded with a smile. If she could get the movements down, then she could practice at home. Though seeing Soren grow a plant from his hand would be interesting, "If you want to do that go ahead! I have a garden at home so I can practice that way."
He nodded, glancing at the spell once again and holding out one of his hands. It took him a few tries to get the movement of his other hand right, but once he did, instantly a blue flower started to appear right above the center of his palm, only a few centimeters away from his hand. Soren copied the movement over and over as the rest of the flower grew, stopping once he was finished and holding out the finished flower to Rowan with a bright smile. "How was that?"
