Melissa had slipped off the same, into a rather restless sleep. For being so tired, she wasn't really going to sleep well.
(Timeskip until later?)
(Sure lol. To when? Would Melissa's parents wake them?)
(Mmm… Idk. They could possibly be down stairs, having a slight argument about the whole thing, and either one or both of them could wake up because of that?)
(Suuuuure)
Lucas slowly stirred at the sound of arguing, yawning again and rubbing at his tired eyes. He sat up and looked over at Melissa's parents yelling, albeit quietly, at each other.
Mrs. Brennahan had a flushed face out of anger, teeth gritted. "What did you expect Lucia? They've known each other for God knows how long, don't you think it was bound to happen?" Mr. Brennahan pointed out, crossing his arms over his chest. "I expected my daughter to not act out like this. She's got a head, she so often points out. Why not use it?"
Lucas took a few seconds to process what they were arguing about. Do they think we…? Of course we didn't! Why would they think that?? He blushed a bit, not entirely sure what to do in this situation.
"Come on honey, I think you're exaggerating this a little bit. The boy was knocked out most of the night." Mr. Brennahan pointed out once more, giving his wife a look. "I am perfectly capable of knowing that, Henry. I'm not an idiot. If you're so positive this won't turn into something bad, then you deal with it when it does." Getting up from her place at the table, she muttered something under her breath in a foreign language before storming off.
Lucas watched her storm off, his heart racing and his cheeks flushed. He really wasn't sure what to do now. He couldn't just leave, obviously. He wasn't allowed to live alone legally, and no one else lived at his house anymore. However, he still didn't want to anger Melissa's parents by being here. He didn't have any ulterior motives by being here, of course, but he didn't know how to prove that.
"Lu?" Melissa asked softly, having woken up from the short nap. "Everything alright? You look warm." Pushing herself up into a sitting position, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes with a slight yawn.
"Um… y-yeah, I'm fine, Mel." He replied quietly, looking over at her instead of her father. "Your parents were arguing…" He said softly.
Cringing just slightly, she let out a heavy sigh. "What did they say? How much did you hear?" Melissa asked the same as him, reaching out to take his hand in her own.
"They were arguing about me, I think…" Lucas sighed quietly and entwined his fingers with Melissa's. "Your mom seems to think we did… something… and your dad was saying that I was unconscious and couldn't have."
"You mean…" Posture straightening out a lot, her face turned a bright pink color. "I…I guess we need to be a million times more careful about how we interact with each other. The normal, platonic things, aren't going to look that way…"
Lucas nodded and looked away, his face still quite flushed. "Y-Yeah… we're really close, and kinda touchy feely, which probably looks pretty bad…"
"And all I want to do right now is pull you into a hug." She groaned, pulling her hand away from his to bury her face in. "Why is this so hard!? Uhg!"
"I'm sorry…" Lucas said quietly, fidgeting with his hands a bit. He couldn't really make eye contact and seemed nervous.
“You don’t need to be sorry, it’s my parents who are worried about us.” Melissa whispered, pulling back from her hands. “We need to just be cautious. No need to isolate from each other. Just not as touchy-feely as we have been.”
Lucas nodded. "Alright… I… we can do that. Might be hard to break our habits, but I think we can do it, right?"
“Yeah, it shouldn’t be too hard. We can still be ourselves at school. Or while we’re out with friends.” Melissa smiled, sucking in a deep breath. “We can totally do this.”
"Mhmm." Lucas fidgeted nervously. "I-I just… I don't want them to kick me out… I don't have anywhere to go. I don't think I'm allowed to live alone."
"They won't kick you out, I promise you. I can make sure that doesn't happen. So don't worry." Melissa told him softly, resting her hand on top of his. "Just relax. You'll be perfectly fine. You're way too sweet, and helpful for them to kick you out."
(Oh I noticed you got engaged again, congrats lol)
(Thanks lol)
Lucas nodded, still seeming nervous. He flushed again at Melissa's description of him. "I-I'm trying my best… I'm just scared of them getting mad at me for something… like… we haven't done anything wrong, I don't think, but I'm still thinking back, terrified that I've misstepped somewhere…"
Giving him a sigh, she reached over to cup his face. "You haven't, I swear you haven't. If my parents disagree, they put some unknown rule in place, I didn't know about. You'll be perfectly fine." Melissa continued to whisper, pulling back and getting up off the couch.
Lucas hesitated a few seconds before getting up as well, running his fingers through his hair nervously. "I just want them to like me… I don't want to have to walk on eggshells here too…" He sighed.
"They do like you Lucas, sometimes I think more than they like me." Melissa said softly, twisting her hair around her finger. "They like you a lot, they're more worried about me and what I have in mind. I'm assuming at least."
Lucas nodded again, still seeming nervous. "I feel like they're just… stalking us or something. Even though we've been friends for years, they still don't trust us."
"I can't do much about it. I think they're just nervous… I haven't dated anyone before, so the fact we've been friends so long sparks some questions. Questions I don't think need answered." She mumbled, beginning to walk out of the room.
Lucas sighed softly and trailed after her. "I-I mean… it'd be pretty obvious if we were dating, right? We'd probably be holding hands all the time and spending all our time together and… going on dates, and… oh god, we look like we're dating, don't we?"
Glancing over her shoulder, she bit into her lip with a slight nod. "We did all of that, just today." Melissa mumbled, not wanting to admit what she was actually thinking. Honestly… would it be a bad thing if we were?
