Following his lead, she chained the two bikes to the post in a matter of seconds. "Ready to head off?" She asked him softly, stretching when she stood back up.
"Mhmm." Lucas took her hand and started leading her through the forest, eventually landing them back at his clearing.
"I still think it's stunning here." Melissa sighed in content, biting on her lip as they did. "And I still don't know how you were so lucky to find it. It's picture perfect here."
"Mhmm. I'm very lucky." Lucas sighed softly, just taking in the area for a few seconds before bringing Melissa up to the weeping willow tree again.
Running a hand through her hair, she held it out of her face when the dipped into the willow tree's shade. "I guess the people with the worst luck, get the good streak every once in awhile."
"Yeah…" Lucas laughed softly. "The world's way of apologizing for how fucked up everything else is." He briefly let go of Melissa to climb up into the tree and then held out his hand to help her up.
Sighing, Melissa nodded at his statement. "I'm sorry I couldn't have helped sooner. I'm sorry I'm still not doing much to help." She whispered, pulling herself up with his hand.
"It's not your fault, Mel. I'm the one who didn't tell you." Lucas led Melissa over to the branch they'd been sitting on the first time they came.
"Yeah, but I always knew something wasn't right. One day I actually decided to look into it." Melissa admitted, feeling worse than she had before. "And I found out what I always wondered about."
Lucas shrugged. "Melissa, it's fine. I don't blame you at all. He's probably locked up by now and I'll… probably never see him again." He sighed and sat down.
"Don't talk like that." She said softly, sitting across from him and leaning forward. "You can visit him, I'm pretty sure at least. They may think you're a little strange, but they shouldn't turn you down."
He glanced over at Melissa, smiling weakly. "I'm really sick, aren't I? Mentally, anyways… I-I mean, he's been abusing me for years, and I almost miss him. Not what he did, of course, but I just… I've lost another person." He sighed.
"Oh come on, I don't think that. I completely understand." She hummed, taking his hand back in her own. "But you didn't lose him, he's still alive. And if you're lucky, he'll be much better if he gets out of prison."
Lucas entwined his fingers with Melissa's and held tight to her. "Y-Yeah… hopefully. I'd like to see him get better."
"I'm positive he will, with a little time off of alcohol, and some correction of alignment." Melissa smiled, taking in the feel of his hand. It was a firm hold, that she absolutely loved.
Lucas nodded. "I just hope he won't become self destructive without that coping mechanism. Claus and I both did, and look where it's landed us…"
"I'm sure that it isn't possible, where he's at right now." Melissa whispered, running her thumb over his hand. 'Unless…' "What do you consider self destruction, exactly?"
"Um… harming himself in any way, I guess? Like, how I hurt myself… or Claus. He did a bit as well before he… well… you know…" Lucas looked down at the ground, fidgeting a bit. Claus's suicide wasn't a memory he liked to look back on.
Leaning back into the tree, she nodded weakly before looking out at the sky. "Well, I'm sure he'll be alright. They'll keep him safe." Melissa whispered, swallowing the lump in her throat.
"B-But they're not watching all the time, and they might not be able to stop him before it happens… he… he could just throw himself into a wall repeatedly or something and hurt himself…"
Snapping her gaze back onto him, she let out a heavy sigh. "Lu," Melissa spoke softly, scooting up to him. "I promise you, he will be OK. Right now, I'm more concerned about you. Can I help you relax, at all?"
Lucas looked over at Melissa, his gaze a bit distant. "Can… can you just distract me or something? Or talk about something different? S-Sorry…"
"Of course, don't be sorry." She whispered, sucking in a deep breath to think. "How about baseball? Do you have a favorite major league team?"
"Um… the Houston Astros are good. Maybe not my personal favorite, but they're at the top right now…" Lucas started rambling about something baseball related, trying to distract himself from his intrusive thoughts.
“Didn’t they win the World Series recently?” Melissa hummed, bringing her one leg up to rest I the branch. “Or am I mixing up teams?”
"No, the Washington Nationals won the most recent one… the Astros won in 2017, though." Lucas hummed softly to himself, looking out at the swaying willow leaves.
"Oh, alright. So decently recent." Melissa nodded, yawning and rubbing her face. "Man, it's so peaceful, I could just fall asleep." Melissa sighed, mindlessly playing with her hair.
"Mhmm…" Lucas yawned a bit as well and moved a little closer to Melissa. "It's just so quiet here. I don't think there's anywhere else like this, at least not near here."
"The mountains are pretty peaceful, but around here… I haven't seen anything like this." She sighed softly, beginning to sway while sitting on the tree branch. Her balance wasn't the best, but she was pretty sure she wasn't going to fall.
"Yeah… careful, Mel." Lucas wrapped one arm around Melissa's shoulders and yawned again. "Wouldn't want to fall."
