When Melissa's mother stormed off upstairs, Melissa whipped around giving him a tight hug. "I'm sorry, so sorry. Are you going to be alright?" She asked softly, holding onto him tightly.
Lucas exhaled shakily and clung to Melissa for dear life. "Y-Yeah, I'm… yeah…" He stammered weakly. "…She was angry…"
"Incredibly." She whispered back, rubbing circles into his back. "You shouldn't have had to see that, I'm sorry." Doing her best to soothe him, she pressed her lips to his cheek gently. "We just gotta be careful what we say."
Lucas flushed a bit and hugged Melissa tighter to hide it. "Mhmm… I-I mean, we weren't doing anything wrong. We aren't doing anything wrong. She can't punish you for helping your friend, right?"
"I have no idea. Somehow she always finds some form of loop-hole." Sighing she pulled back from him, cupping his cheek in her hand. "Listen, she isn't going to touch you. You aren't her kid. But me, that's a different story. As long as you're careful, nothing is going to happen to you. You'll be able to stay here if you don't speak out of line later on."
Lucas nodded. "I don't want her to hurt you either, Mel…" He said softly. "I wouldn't wish that upon anyone, especially not you."
"I'll just need some comforting afterwards if she does." Melissa sighed in response, giving him a quick hug before pulling back. "Let me go help my dad, you can come with me if you'd like." Beginning to make her way out the door, she glanced up to him.
Lucas trailed after her, still clearly uneasy and tense. He knew that facing Melissa's father, who he presumed was also likely to be angry, wouldn't be great for him, but he wanted to help.
Glancing over her shoulder to see him, she reached back to take his hand in her own. Lacing their fingers together, she glanced around the car to see her father unpacking things and setting them on the driveway. "Hi papi…" She offered weakly, picking up two smaller bags and slid them over her arm. Only receiving a nod in return, she sighed glancing up to Lucas.
Lucas took the bags from Melissa and brought them inside, setting them on the counter in the kitchen and pausing for a few seconds to calm himself down. He did a couple rounds of his breathing techniques and relaxed a bit, though he couldn't stay here long for fear of it being suspicious.
"Lu?" She asked, cautiously following him along into the room he was in. "Everything alright?" She asked softly, setting the bag down at her feet.
"Y-Yeah, I'm fine… just giving myself a couple seconds to relax so I don't go off." Lucas sighed softly and ran his fingers through his hair.
"You wanna go lie down, or just relax on my bed?" She asked softly, cupping his cheek in her hand. "I got this, you don't have to worry."
"I really don't think I should be hanging around in your room with your parents here, Mel… they're already suspicious. I'll just… I'll go sit in the backyard for a few minutes, okay?"
Giving him a soft look, she nodded gently before pulling back. "Yeah, that makes sense. Just be careful, alright? For my sake." She whispered, glancing over her shoulder before walking off.
"I will." Lucas sighed softly and left to go get some fresh air in the backyard. He sat down on the steps and drew in a few more controlled breaths.
Melissa finished carrying the luggage inside, and found herself alone in the kitchen. 'I… should go check on Lucas.' She directed herself, pausing in her tracks. Opening the fridge, she pulled out a pitcher of lemonade, and two glasses out of the cabinet. Setting it on a small tray, she carried it outside with her, and set it on the table next to him. "You thirsty?"
"A bit. Thanks, Mel." Lucas smiled softly and accepted a glass of lemonade. "By all means, feel free to join me. I think I'm alright now."
Sitting on the edge of the porch chair, she took her own glass sipping from it. "Thank you." She said softly, looking out into the unfenced yard.
"No worries. It's your yard anyways, not mine. You can sit where you want." Lucas shrugged and took another sip of lemonade.
"Not that Lucas," She whispered setting the glass aside. "Just everything you've done, in the past twenty four hours. You've done more than I could ever ask for. So thank you."
"Oh! Um… No problem, Mel. Really I'm the one who should be thanking you." He smiled gently as he looked over at her.
"Come on, don't be like that. You deserve all the thanks in the world." She continued to whisper, with a soft sigh.
"For what?" Lucas asked curiously, seeming genuinely confused. "I really don't think I've done anything special."
"Do you want me to go down the list?" Melissa asked him, clicking her tongue at the end for emphasis. "Because we'll be here for a while if I do."
Lucas sighed. "No, we don't have time for that… just like, in summary, why do you think I actually deserve thanks?"
"Everything that just happened, not even twenty minutes ago. You just being around, you've got no idea what that means to me." Melissa whispered, biting onto her lip.
Lucas fidgeted with his hands a bit. "B-But… you've had to do so much more. And… I'm sorry."
Pressing a finger to his lips, shushing him. "We're not talking about me right now Lucas, we're talking about you. And how thankful I am to have you." She argued with him, pulling her hand back.
Lucas nodded hesitantly. "I… alright, then, I… you're welcome, I guess?" He replied awkwardly.
