Thankies! Yeah!
Thankies! Yeah!
Alright let me grab the starter.
He woke up that morning, gazing idly up at the ceiling. He sat up slowly, his tall, skinny body aching all over. Like the aches he got literally all the time. He sighed at his legs, which were hanging over the bed. No wonder I’m aching, He thought for the umpteenth time, I’m growing out of my bed.
A little bell rang, signaling for breakfast. He rose, stretched out his shoulders, then skulked out of his room. Next to his nameplate, was a little stickynote, Good luck in Vistor’s Hour, Met! I know you’ll do very well!
Met sighed and grabbed the note off of the nameplate, then shoved it into his sweatpant’s pocket. He doubted he’d do well. Who needed a sixteen year old orphan?
Maybe she was a bit overexcited, but Olive didn't care much. She slurped on her third frappe, her foot tapping with a nervous rhythm as they sat in the parking lot of a McDonalds not to far from the orphanage. She'd finally convinced Micah to agree, they'd get a child today.
"You okay over there, Oli? You look ready to burst." He chuckled, his voice deep and raspy, just how she liked it. She looked to him and smiled, leaning over to kiss her cheek. He was more silent the usual, playing with the cuffs of his crisp white button up. He was nervous and she could tell. Her heart softened towards him and she took his hand.
"You look ready to burst too." She teased. "We'll find the one, love." She told him
He sighed. "That's what scares me…"
Met chewed on his lip, the morning irritability melting away as the day looked over him. He squished the carpet under his toes nervously and started to shuffle into the other rooms, more specifically the one the parents and kids would be grouping up in. There were already a few kids there, but they were waiting for food. Met sat in his usual armchair, sighing softly as he relaxed slowly.
A little girl approached him, squeaking loudly up at him in Spanish. He smiled and mumbled back softly, lifting her up easily into a hug.
Olive checked her watch. "It's time!" She smiled, even as Micah sighed. He started the engine and went down the rode. He parked before the orphanage, watched a few other adults head inside. When Olive got ready to move, grabbing her purse and opening the door, Micah didn't move.
"What if we're not go at this…?" He blurted. His blue eyes trailed up to Olive. She could see his doubt and worry there. And she cooed. "Aw, Micah…" She took his hand again and squeezed it. "Babe, we won't know until we try. Besides, we can't do that bad." She laughed softly. Her laugh always brought him peace, even when she laughed just to protect his heart. She held him in her hands so securely. How in the world did he live without her?
He got out of the car, still battling his nerves, but he would be strong, for her. She deserved that in the least.
Olive's eyes were wide as they entered the Visiting Room. She had to agree with Micah when she realized a nervousness had truly set in. There were few others already there, speaking with children and teens, looking for the one. The one that they would share their lives with, welcome in their home, the one they 'd love. She took a deep breath and gave Micah's hand another squeeze before walking about the room.
The little girl squeaked and wiggled happily, giggling as she hugged back the teenager. Met smiled a little and set the girl down once he noticed adults coming in. He shrunk into his chair, prepared to move and flee into the kitchen if needed. The tiny little Spanish-speaking girl humbled about the room, looking up at a few adults and squeaking random words in English, like “Pen” “dog” or “candy”. This got a few pieces of candy from kinder, older adults who carried whole grocery stores in their bags. The girl shrieked when she got a lollipop and ran over to Met, showing it to him. He nodded with a tiny, sad smile. The girl was so sweet, but she was new to the orphanage. She had a heart and a loving little squeak. She’d be adopted fast, yet Met couldn’t help the protective relationship he set over with her.
Olive eyes were glued to the little girl, a faint smile on her lips as she watched her smile and speak and shriek with pieces of candy. But her eyes soon went to the one the girl returned to constantly, brandishing her new finds for him to see.
It was a teenager, lanky and pale, he couldn't have been any more than 16. He still looked like a mere child, despite his height. He didn't socialize like the others, in fact, he seemed to be trying to hide, shying away from the crowd. Olive tapped Micah to get his attention, but he'd been thinking the same thing.
"We can try to talk to him…" He offered, which Olive agreed. The crossed the room to the boy, Olive waving to the little girl once they approached the table. They sat down in the spare chairs and put on nervous smiles.
"Hello." Olive said softly.
The girl set down her lollipop in the teenager’s hands and she bumbled off again to get more as the pair approached. Met glanced up past his sheet of hair, paling slightly as they sat around him. His eyes flitted back and forth between the pair and he shifted into his chair, pressing himself into it as if trying to disappear.
“Um… hello,” He murmured softly, bowing his head slightly in respect.
"Hey." Micah waved his hand. The boy looked like he was ready to dip out of there and hide in his room. When Olive didn't say anything else, Micah picked up the conversation. "Uh- My name is Micah. And this is Olive." He gestured to his love, who waved as well. But her eyes were searching the boy. She obviously saw something with her eyes that Micah couldn't at the time. "What's your name?" He asked.
Met cleared his throat softly before talking again, “Hello. It’s nice to meet ypu. I’m Met.” He shifted so his legs were curled up closer to his face, hiding his lips and nose, as well as the rest of his handsome face. Surely this pair would like a young child. They seemed fit and happy, not to mention young.
((I'm home now!))
"It's nice to meet you, Met." Micah replied. He glanced at Olive and she took up the reins from there.
"How old are you, Met?" She asked, she set her purse on her lap, trying to catch his eye.
(Oh yay!)
Met rubbed a couple scars hidden underneath the high collar of his shirt. “I-I’m sixteen.” He didn’t let the woman grab his gaze like she wanted, just kept his glued down on his lap and the candy.
"Wow…" Olive remarked. "Well, how long have you been here?" Olive took the conversation one question at a time, he didn't look like a kid who liked be bombarded or pushed. So she simple asked, he wasn't required to answer.
She knew Micah was confused, they had come to see if they could pick out a toddler, or maybe even go and get a baby from the nursery. Not a 16 year old who was pretty much done with childhood. But there was something about this one, a timidness that pulled on her heartstring so furiously. She didn't want to leave him here.
“I-I’ve been here for eight years,” Met mumbled, the answer barely audible over the happy screeches of his fellow orphans. Eight years was a really long time. He really wished he could’ve spent them not in an orphanage, and in a loving household.
Micah whistled in astonishment. Olive sighed. "That's a very long time, Met." She said. "Well um, I was wondering… You don't have to, you know that, but…. Micah and I are in the market for a plus one for our home. We have kitten name Kiwi and he gets kinda lonely when we're not home. Do you like kittens?"
Met blushed and stared more down at his lap, unwilling to look up at the adults. “I-I know it is.” He twiddled his thumbs, rubbing at a wrapper for a package of Smarties. “I like kittens. They’re nice and fluffy.” His response was rather vague. He didn’t wan to live too much in the moment, in case he woke up. Which surprisingly didn’t happen all that often with him…
"They are." Olive smiled, nodding. "And Kiwi's a baby, he likes to cuddle." Micah added. He held his phone out to Met, showing a picture of their all black kitten. "He'll love your hair." He chuckled.
A cuddly kitten sounded nice. Kittens were warm and soft and they purred when they were pet.
“He’s very cute-looking,” Met observed softly. Would he go with these pair of adults for the kitten? Yes. But not just because of that. He wanted a home and family too.
"Thank you." They said in unison, laughing at each other afterwards. "What we're trying to say is we wanna take you, kid. My girl sees something in you that she likes. I feel like we could be the family we all want." Micah told Met, his blue eyes one Met. "You don't have to call us 'mom and dad' or anything like that– If you do, we don't mind either. It's…however you'd like." Olive waved a hand as her words became rushed in a nervous mess. What if the boy said no? What if he didn't like them?
Met swallowed a little, inhaling softly. “I-I… I guess I could come home with you. I’d like that a lot. You seem like very nice people and… I don’t know.” His voice died down quietly, realizing he was talking too much.
"Really?" Micah asked. "You want to go home with us?" Olive questioned, their eyes wide. If the kid really wanted to, then…. they were parents now. Olive looked to Micah who looked to her, and smiled. They were really parents! She looked at Met once more and suddenly grew serious. "Are you sure?"
“I-I… yeah,” Met said softly, glancing up. Why not? They seem like very nice people. He smiled a weak, tiny smile. “It’ll be great to go home with you two.”
The couple smiled at the boy. Olive even bounced a little in her seat. Sure, this wasn't the kid they had expected to pick up when they got here, but he was still quite the pick. The shy boy had commanded Olive's attention as soon as she got there.
"Well then… I guess we should start filling out the paperwork then, yeah?" Micah asked her. She nodded standing, Micah by her side.
Met watched them stand, blinking a couple times. This was… happening quite fast. He stuttered softly in gentle protest, grabbing the candy brancingly before standing a little out of the chair.
“R-right now? Now?”
"Yeah… are you okay with that?" She asked, looking at Met. He was a tall sixteen year old. He was almost as tall as Micah.
Met slowly rose up to his full height, hunching slightly. He felt too tall compared to the tiny woman and the man.
“Yes. It’s fine.”
"I feel small…." She muttered, tucking her purse under her arm. "Come along, you two." She said, heading to the front office.
Met blushed and hunched a bit more so that his shoulders strained and back hurt. “I’m sorry,” He murmured, having heard the woman as he followed the pair.
Olive laughed. "You have nothing to be sorry about, Met." She glanced back at him. "Do you have anything you'd like to take with you?"
