Peter looked as though he'd been slapped. After a moment, his jaw tensed and he growled, "Yes, sir," before turning once more and pacing away.

A small noise came from behind John.

@KalamariCakes

John's posture hunched, he lifted a hand to pinch the nose of his bridge and try to rub the throbbing from behind his eyes. He felt dazed. Felt wounded, felt poisonous for saying those things.

"I-I'm sorry. I didn't know you were married," the woman whispered. She sounded younger then she had before. Weaker, even…

A gentle hand touched his arm. "For what it's worth… I do think you're kind and brave," she said softly.

"Your wife is lucky to have you." The words sounded forced, but she really did mean it. The only problem is, I want to have you…

The woman took a step to stand beside him and pressed a light, whispery kiss to the bottom of his cheek. "I know. And I will truly miss you, Monsieur André."

@KalamariCakes

His lips tightened, and he said nothing. "I'll buy a bottle of whiskey, before I go."

( god. Have you ever wanted to throttle someone so badly. Even though they dont actually exist )

(Yes! XD John or the woman?)

She retreated back inside and got a bottle for him. Slowly, she tied a string around the neck of the bottle and wrote her name on the tag. She hurried out and gave it to him. "I'm sorry for the trouble," she said quietly.

The woman turned and rushed back into the tavern without another word. Quiet tears streamed down her cheeks.
(XD Can you have him just glance at the tag?)

@KalamariCakes

Ye– planned on it too! On the same wavelength!)

John stepped outside, his index finger brushed the edge of the note. Peering down, he flicked it open to see.

@blue_topaz

(Won’t Pierre have gone back to camp by now?)

Pierre slipped on his boots and joined her outside, enclosing her hand in his.

Ouf, um, yeah prolLy my b a d )

"I missed this." She murmured.

(Oof it’s fine, lol)

“Mm,” he agreed, squeezing her hand,

She leaned her head against his arm.

“How have you been holding up?” Pierre asked, slipping an arm around her and tugging her close.

He sighed through his nose, pulling off the note. Now… Keep it, or throw it out?
Hold onto this or do the right thing

John kept it.

(Should we keep going to Peter back at camp, or should we skip to Jane/Simcoe/Chadine?)

"Pensive," she spoke. "About everything.. And.. Going back to war…"

(Okay!)

Jane was reading a book in the sitting room, completely entranced by the words.

A knock at the door plucked her from her trance.

Jane sighed reluctantly and slipped a bookmark into her book as she stood and headed to the door. She took a deep breath to compose herself, then opened it.
