She handed it to him and smiled. "Here you are."
He lifted it to his mouth to take a generous swallow.
"When should we give Chadine her gift?" Jane asked softly.
"Later," John insisted.
"Alright," she murmured, going back behind him and massaging his shoulder again.
(2019 Jane: "I read on Pinterest that this is supposed to relax you!")
His head fell back again, his eyes slipped shut. "Mm.."
She smiled sweetly and did it in a way that she knew he liked.
"Where'd you learn shoulder massaging?" John laughed quietly.
"Just picked it up, I guess," Jane replied lightheartedly.
"You're amazing," he laughed gently.
She blushed. "Thank you. But don't discredit yourself, John. I am the luckiest woman to have a brave husband like you."
He shook his head, "Please, enough about me.." John insisted.
"No, I mean it. I want to know how you've been. I've hardly heard anything about when you were away," she said, her words truly innocent and oblivious to what she was asking of him.
"It's war," he replied shortly. "There isn't much of anything joyful to say,"
"There have to be some joyful part… How is Peter?" she inquired.
His voice dropped to a whisper, "He's okay."
She noticed his change in volume and became worried. "Has something happened to him?"
"No, he's…" John shook his head tautly. "He's growing, distant. I suppose."
"That's too bad," she remarked sadly. "Why is that?"
"I don't know." He lied.
"Maybe we should have him and Elizabeth over for dinner sometime," she suggested.
"I don't know." John mumbled. "There is friction between us,"
"Whatever could have caused it?" she asked. It was an innocent question at heart.
"I don't know," John murmured.
"Would it have anything to do with your new positions?" she asked gently.
"Jane," he spoke, "Let's talk about something else, please."
"I'm sorry," she said quickly. "Why don't you suggest something to talk about?"
"Talk to me about Roo," he spoke softly.
