"Not at all." John whispered.
"Not at all." John whispered.
"Are you upset with me?" she asked softly.
He shook his head again, "No.. not at all.."
"Then won't you tell me what's wrong?"
"Not yet," he croaked. "Not yet, I can't.."
She couldn't lie and say she wasn't affected by his words. "Oh… alright."
He rested his head down in his arms.
"Do you want to see the gift for Chadine?" she asked, hoping it would cheer him up a bit.
"Sure." He replied quietly.
"Let me go and get it," she said quickly, hurrying from the room.
John cast a look towards the shreds of paper in the bin. It felt unreal, all of this..
Jane reappeared with the basket and a hopeful smile. "What do you think?"
"It's… Cute.." he attempted halfheartedly.
Her shoulders dropped a little bit. "You don't like it."
"No, I'm just.. I'm just beside myself, don't.. I didn't mean to offend you,"
She nodded slowly. "If I've done anything…"
He looked down again. "You've done nothing wrong.."
"Do you want me to stay, or go?" she asked quietly.
"Stay…?" He mumbled.
"Alright," she said softly. "I'll stay." She set the basket on a chair and walked over behind him to massage his shoulders and back again.
He leaned his head back against her stomach and shut his eyes.
Pierre tensed and raised his gun, fear tearing through him.
The first enemy gunshot fired from the opposite side of the camp, and then chaos burst like a bubble.
Bullets flew, shouts reverberated through the field. Pierre fired and dodged, already stepping over slumped bodies. His heart pounded.
"No! No!" Pierre heard the last bloody screams of a full grown man. A man who loved his own Edonine somewhere, who had fallen in love as quickly, and died quicker.
He leaned his head back against her stomach and shut his eyes.
She smiled and moved one of her hands to smooth his hair gently.
Oh.. Jane always knew how to get to him. It made John feel better, a little, it was easier to forget when she was right there. It was easier to focus on her touch than his own thoughts.
"Are you feeling better?" she asked softly.
"A little…" He replied softly.
"Would you like me to pour you more wine?" Her hands moved back down to his shoulders.
"Yes.. yes, please," he tilted his head back and peered up at her.
She kissed his forehead. "Alright, hold on a second." She walked around and refilled his glass.
