"It was four or five," Rey said, turning his stack so she could see the spines, "Ridiculous, if you ask me."
Melissa watched the people with admiration. How could they be so… talkative? No, talkative was a stupid word. Her mind whirled to come up with something better. Gregarious. That's good, she thought. She'd only obtained one thing on her school list – her wand. It was hidden in her hand and she clutched it tightly.
"My goodness, why do we need so many?" Cassandra said, looking at how thick they were. I hope Umbridge changes her mind about these books.
Luna looked at the list of books she needed. As she walked through the shelves she saw one of the books she needed. "Great, Leo's already wandered off." She mumbled under her breath.
Melissa knew she should get up and go find her things, but she was deathly afraid of getting lost and not being able to find someone she knew. Her mother had dropped her off here and went running some errands to a few Muggle shops, and her father was at work.
"Who knows?" Rey sighed. "Well, I have to finish buying my supplies. Hopefully we see each other at Hogwarts. It would be nice to get to know you better."
He flashed Cassandra a smile and started to walk away, first up to the counter to purchase the books, then out the door back into the alley.
Rey walked down the street and caught a glimpse of a little girl. He almost passed her by, but he didn't see any parents around, and she looked a little lost. He approached her cautiously.
"You going to Hogwarts this year? You look about the age," he said, "How's the shopping going?"
“Goodbye,” Cassandra’s reply was lost as he hurried out of the shop. Sighing to herself, she picked up the other books she needed for this year before checking out and heading to Ollivander’s. Each year she paid him a visit, even though she bought her wand years ago.

Melissa retreated a little into the sketchy shadows, her dark hair falling over half of her face. Too timid to speak, she nodded at his first question, but she didn't respond to his question about shopping. She did know where everything was. She just didn't want to go out there into the huge crowd of wizards. Small, tight places scared her. There's no way you're going to be in Gryffindor, wimp.
"Alright, that's great! I'm going into my sixth year. Slytherin, if you were curious," Rey replied. He didn't want to bother her too much. She seemed quiet, but he figured she should at least go into school knowing someone there, so he didn't leave. He was also a little concerned by the fact her parents weren't around, but he said nothing.
She just nodded again. Her wand was clutched in a tight grip, but she didn't know any good spells yet, so it might as well have been a stick. She figured she might as well say something now, so she cleared her throat quietly and whispered shyly, "My name is Melissa."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Rey," he said. His eyes wandered to the wand in her hand. "I see you've already got your wand. What kind is it?"
"Vine-wood," she replied softly. "Unicorn hair core. 10 ¾ inches." Her tense fingers relaxed slightly.
Rey nodded, looking at the wand a bit more closely. "Yeah, it's a pretty one. Then again, Ollivander wouldn't sell a bad wand. He sold me mine before my first year: a 13-inch Alder with a dragon heartstring core. It's wonderful at performing little hexes and curses here and there. So, um… did you have a particular house in mind, or are you going to let the Sorting Hat figure everything out for you?"
"I'm not very brave, so I don't think I'll be in Gryffindor," she answered. "And I'm not very smart either." Her eyes flitted up to his, finally observing his facial features. He looked nice.
"What do you want to be?" Rey asked, "If you want to be brave, you could be a Gryffindor. I think it has more to do with desire and goals than it does with who you already are. Don't knock yourself down this early. You haven't even started."
He kind of laughed. "My first year, I got made fun of for being a 'Hufflepuff in Slytherin's clothing.' Honestly, how pathetic is that on their part?"
"My parents," she began, then stopped suddenly. For a moment, she didn't speak, just looked intently at him and thought about what she wanted to say. Eventually, her lips opened again and words poured out like a small stream and turning into a rushing wave. "My parents are both purebloods, and they want me to be in Slytherin. My father especially. I don't know what he would do if I were to end up in Gryffindor. And besides, even if I wanted to be brave, I couldn't be. I'm not brave at all…" She hadn't meant to say all that, and once she was finished, she curled up a little. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"Don't be sorry," Rey said soothingly, "And hey, even if you do end up in Slytherin, you've got me. We aren't all bad apples. But yeah… sometimes people don't end up in the house you'd expect. There's nothing wrong with you making a choice like that. And if your parents are outraged that you're not in Slytherin, tell them the Sorting Hat did it. Simple enough."
"I guess," she replied, back to her short, quiet sentences. Her eyes darted around nervously like she expected someone to jump out and grab her.
"What's wrong?" Rey asked, "I'm not bothering you, am I? Oh, who am I kidding? I'm interrupting your shopping. You've got supplies to find, don't you?"
"I've only got my wand," she answered.
Cassandra slipped out of Flourish and Blotts and into Ollivander’s, poking her head inside. He’s got a customer. Better to come back later. She then headed to Madame Malkin’s, since her robes were in need of an upgrade.
"I've only got my wand," she answered.
"You need a pewter cauldron and some other things for potions, right?" Rey asked, trying to remember what all was on the first year list of supplies. "Why don't you go that way first, so you can have something to haul around your books in? I can come with you if you want."
(Sorry… I fell asleep…)
(It's totally fine! ;D)
She nodded quickly. "Can you please?"
Rey nodded. "I have to get a few supplies for potions too anyway."
He started walking in the direction of the potions shop, checking over his shoulder to make sure the girl was following him.
(What's the potions shop called again?)
(Potage's Cauldron Shop?)
Melissa stood up and followed him warily. Her steps got shorter as they approached the crowd and her breathing became clipped.
As Rey walked, the crowd parted around him pretty easily. That was one of the perks of being tall. He looked back every few seconds to make sure Melissa was still close.
Melissa stayed close to him, trying not to bump into anyone. Her eyes darted around anxiously the whole time.
