He shrugged. “It’s no problem.” It came out more like a whisper.
He shrugged. “It’s no problem.” It came out more like a whisper.
Kasey looked over at him, biting her lower lip.
"Are you sure you're okay?" she asked gently.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?” He gave her a smile, but his eyes were shadowed with something unidentifiable. Beginning to clean up, he steadied his breathing.
"You just seem… off or something. Like something's bothering you," Kasey said as she watched him clean up.
“Nah.” Barry shrugged, finally pulling up a fake but convincing smile. Just that you look so pretty and you’re so amazing but you probably don’t like me., he thought to himself, not saying any of it out loud. “What time is it? It’s dark out already.”
"Um…" Kasey grabbed her phone from the nightstand beside her and glanced at the screen. "Like nine o'clock."
(achoo)
(Do you have a cold?)
Barry rubbed his eyes, nodding. “What time are you going to sleep at?” His fingers were still tingling, but the heart tattoo has reverted back to black.
(Not anymore! I did last week… That wasn't fun…)
"Probably soon. I have to work in the morning, so I'll be up pretty early," Kasey said with a loose shrug.
(Eek)
“I’ll just sleep whenever you do.” Barry flopped back into his blanket, staring at the ceiling with a small smile.
"Okay," Kasey said, flopping into her side – the good one, not where she had been tattooed. That would have been painful; more so than getting it done, she was sure. She had told Barry that it hadn't hurt too badly, but it had been pretty rough when he first started. The needles digging into her skin in a seemingly endless but rythmic pattern, placing dots of color under her skin, drawing a bit of blood every now and then.
"Do you want to play a game?" she asked suddenly, snapping out of her thoughts.
Barry furrowed his brow, confused. “Game?” He pushed himself into a sitting position. “Like what?”
Kasey shrugged a shoulder. "We could do a board game or a card game or something. I have Monopoly and Life, and I also have multiple decks of cards."
Barry grinned. “Sure. I could probably destroy you at pretty much any card game though, so careful what you choose..” His tone was light, teasing, not at all like the strained voice he’d been using a minute ago.
"You wish," Kaseu chuckled as she sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed.
She stood and crossed to a bookshelf filled with books of every size, length, color, and genre, as well as a few games and the cards. After grabbing a deck from a shelf, she made her way back to Barry and sat down cross-legged in front of him.
"You ever play Trash or Garbage?" she asked, pulling out the cards and shuffling them effortlessly.
"Like…. three years ago. I vaguely remember the rules, though." Barry shifted into a cross-legged position to match hers, glancing back at the bookshelf. "That is a lot of books."
"What can I say? I love to read," Kaswy chuckled as she dealt out ten cards each. "So you basically just have to get rid of all your cards by finding one that matches its place. Like an ace for one, a two for two, et cetera. Jacks are wilds and can be used wherever you see fit."
"Gotcha. Could you go first?" Barry eye's were flickering back and forth between her lips and her eyes, fixing themselves on his cards whenever she looked his way.
(Skip?)
"Sure," Kasey said as she picked up a card from the draw pile. She placed it in its correct place and continued on with the game.
(sure, to when?)
(Maybe when they're done?)
(so before they go to bed or in the morning?)
(Before they go to bed.)
(kk)
(want me to go or do you want to go?)
(I was thinking you would go.)
(sure, sorry!)
"Fine, I give up! You win!" Barry threw his hands up with a laugh. It was almost 11.
(sorry my writing is really crappy today, I'm not in the happiest mood oof it's sorta weird)
(Aw, I'm sorry. I hope it gets better…)
Kasey laughed and stuck her fist in the air. "Yes! And you thought you were so great."
(thanks)
Barry blew a petulant raspberry at her. "I'll get you next time."
(Anytime. If you need anything, just let me know.)
"Sure you will," Kasey chuckled, reaching across the cards to flick his forehead.
