"Mmhm. Let me change my clothes quickly, though," Amber yawned, covering her mouth to do so.
"Mmhm. Let me change my clothes quickly, though," Amber yawned, covering her mouth to do so.
“All right,” William nodded in agreement before he made way to his room to change into comfortable clothing. When he was done, he waited for Amber.
Amber changed into basically the same thing she had worn the night before. The only thing that was different was the tank top she wore underneath William’s hoodie. When she finished, she knocked on his door before stepping into the room.
William looked up from his position on the bed when Amber entered, smiling when he noticed the hoodie she was wearing. He opened his arms, beckoning her to come to him, cocking his head to the side as he did so.
Amber smiled at William and made her way over. She sat down on the bed, curling up into his side. “You’re the best, you know that, right?”
William wrapped his arms around Amber, closing his eyes briefly. “Well, I should be for you,” he murmured. “God, you make me so cheesy. What are you doing to me, Blue?”
“Making you adorable,” Amber teased with a chuckle, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Do you have a problem with that?”
“Maybe,” William responded, tightening his grip on her. “But perhaps I can bear it if it makes you happy. Just don’t expect me to wear cat ears.”
Amber hummed, amused, and nuzzled his cheek. “I never thought of that… What if I asked very nicely?” she joked.
"My answer's still no," William grunted, pinching her cheek. "Even if you ask me nicely."
“Hey,” Amber laughed, burying her face in his shoulder so he couldn’t get to it. “All right, all right… No cat ears.”
William laughed, kissing the top of her head in affection. “Good girl. Now go to sleep.”
Amber chuckled softly, shifting so that she was more comfortable. “Goodnight, Will…”
“Goodnight, Blue,” William ran his fingers through her silk hair before he stilled, his girlfriend’s scent washing through him as he fell asleep.
[Saturday, January 19 — After practice]
Amber sat down on the edge of the bleachers as she waited for William to get out of the shower. Looking down at her phone, she didn’t notice the two pairs of feet tentatively making their way toward her until they were close enough to be in her line of sight. When she looked up, she sighed heavily and looked away, masking her true expression with a faked calm one.
“Amber? Can we talk to you? Please?” The tall blonde she used to call one of her best friends asked.
“You can do whatever you like. I won’t stop you,’ Amber muttered, looking back down at her phone.
Jace swallowed thickly, running a hand through his hair. He felt nervous—and for good reason.
“Amber… we won’t take much of your time,” Jace finally spoke up. “We just want to talk.”
Amber sighed again and tore her eyes up to meet his, keeping them empty of emotion. “What is it, Jace?”
Jace winced both at her voice and the look in her eyes. He deserved that, he knew it.
“I’m sorry,” he started hesitantly. “And I know apologies won’t fix what I broke—what Savannah and I broke, but we still wanted to apologize for going behind your back. I promise you, we were going to tell you. We just didn’t know how to, and you found out on your own… we’re so sorry, Amber.”
“Do you really think that telling me that you were cheating on my with one of my best friends would have been any better than this? Not gonna lie, you probably would have gotten punched in the face. Hard,” Amber said, putting her phone in the jacket pocket and sitting on her trembling hands.
“We’re still so sorry, Amber… Really. When you saw us, I had actually been going to tell him that we had to stop,” Savannah explained softly, her hands gripping each other tightly. “But then… You know…”
“There’s nothing we can say to make it hurt less, but I want you to know that waking up that day and finding out what I had done, it tore me apart,” Jace said quietly. “I regret doing that to you, for not being able to control myself. As Savannah said, we were going to stop. We planned on never seeing each other again after that, but… the rest, you know.”
The whole time, Jace couldn’t bring himself to look at Amber, the guilt eating him alive. It would be a blessing if Amber forgave him.
Savannah look over at Jace, her gaze taking him in softly. Her hand found his, and she gave him a gentle squeeze.
Amber sighed and looked down again. She shook her head slowly before murmuring. “Okay… I forgive you guys… But I don’t know if I’ll be able to be your friend again. Not for a while, at least.”
Jace squeezed her hand back, grateful for her presence. He breathed out in relief.
“Thank you, Amber,” he said with a shuddering breath. “For forgiving us. That’s all we wanted.”
Amber nodded once, slowly getting to her feet. “I’ll see you guys, later, I guess,” she muttered, starting to walk away toward the exit.
When William walked into the gym, he expected Amber to be waiting for him. He found her to be absent, and it increased his worry. What could have compelled her to leave without informing him?
“Drew,” he addressed his teammate. “Did Blue tell you where she was going?”
Drew furrowed his eyebrows.
“Sorry, William, she was gone by the time I got here,” he offered an apologetic look. “I thought you had left?”
William just shook his head. Maybe she had gone back to the dorm.
Amber sat down at the piano in the empty music room. She took a deep breath and ran her fingers over the keys lightly, though her hands and shoulders were tense. Letting out her breath shakily, she began to play one of her favorite songs…
“I remember tears streaming down your face when I said, ‘I’ll never let you go’…” she sang when she got to the lyrics.
William pulled out his phone (he started keeping it with him after what happened previously) and dialed Amber’s number, wanting to know if she was okay. Aftef all, she hadn’t even left a text. He was worried. He told himself she could take care of herself, but to leave without saying anything… that wasn’t like his Blue.
Amber felt her phone vibrating in her pocket and finished the line she was singing before stopping. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and glanced at the screen.
“Hey, Will…” she answered softly.
She answered. Relief coursed through him, but was quickly replaced by the same worry when he noticed the tire in her voice.
“Hey, Blue,” he said just as softly. “Where are you right now?”
“I’m… in the music room,” Amber admitted, chewing on her lip. “Sorry… I should have let you know.”
“It’s all right,” William answered with a soft smile, though he knew Amber couldn’t hear him. “I’ll be right there, okay? Just wait for me.”
