“ The incompetence of some people…embarrassing.” Ali tossed aside the shamelessly forgotten lock with its latch left open. A stupid, but convenient situation that allowed Ali to just…stroll right inside. Without even breaking a sweat he’s already overcome the hardest part of his mission.

Ali shakes his head, hand unconsciously gripped around his blaster hanging on his hip. “ It’s a wonder this place is still standing.”

Apart from the lock being left unlatched, the place was in a ruin of scattered papers and strange plants. Left to grow, unmanaged through the cracks in the floor. Replacing old screws and bolts that were once there to now hold the floors together with their roots.

It was strange seeing the building in such disarray, but Ali had figured an organization so obsessed with human mutations would forge chores to instead create a specific gene that urged someone to clean for them. Though, seeing as some of the papers Ali passes over date back nearly two years ago- it’s safe to say they might have not perfected that yet.

“ It would be genius though.” Ali hums, spreading out the pile of papers beneath his feet. Studying each piece of paper with furrowed brows before stepping over them and moving on to the next pile.

He was able to peacefully pocket a note catering to the enhancement of home lighting- some funny explanation about wiring the rooms to turn off automatically once you leave or fall asleep- before being interrupted by the sound of approaching footsteps.

“ Shit.” Ali analyzed the messy hallway around him for some sort of cover but was only able to sigh angrily at the idea of hiding in a pile of papers. Especially since some of them had been soaking in a strange blue, lemony liquid. The source of its pollution was secondary…but Ali wouldn’t doubt it if this place replaced water in their sprinkler systems with acid.

The footsteps were coming closer. Echoing from within the building to exit the same place Ali had just entered.
He wasn’t quite sure of it, but Ali found the footsteps strangely agile. Being as paper can become a slippery death trap on smooth surfaces, it should be worrying to run at top speed within an enclosed hallway covered in it. Though, the intruder seemed not to mind.

Ali, in a moment of quick thinking, hid behind the corner the stranger was theorized to turn at and clutched at his blaster. Agile feet could always give away the presence of a small opponent, and Ali was sure of himself- even while being slightly…underweight- that he could take them down weapon-free.
But, with that said, elephants are known to have the softest footsteps for their size…

There wasn’t much time left to think before a person rounded the corner and was instantly tripped by Ali’s fast feet.

“ Fuck!” The man, short for how old he might be, caught himself inches before the ground. His chest skimmed the papers so that they gathered in a crumpled heap beneath him. Unfortunately, for him, he also doused his front in a heavy splash of that blue liquid.
“ Shit, shit. What the fuck?”

While the man gathered himself, Ali took his time checking around the corner for potential guests. He was did not take being ambushed very well and would rather deal with one thing at a time- thank you very much.
Luckily the hallways seemed to only bare paper and plants.

Ali sighed. He turned back to watch as the man struggled to stand up before a smirk crawled onto his face.

Raising his foot, Ali pushed at the stranger's back. Sending them tumbling into the next puddle of blue liquid and paper.

“ God- goddamn!”

In a surprise turn of events, Ali was not fast enough to dodge the unexpected kick towards his shin. The position of the man left Ali to think he was vulnerable, but he was sorely mistaken when the stranger reared back his leg like a donkey.

“ Holy shit!” Ali stumbled backward, hands waving by his sides in a fight to stay upright but also refrain from bending down to soothe his foot. However, he did not find himself on the floor and was heavily relieved of that fact as the stranger jumped up from the ground to kick at his chest.

Ali easily caught the stranger's foot and held it high above his shoulder. Smiling contently as the stranger struggled to remain upright, Ali took assess of the their outfit.
It was…questionable to say the least.

A simple long-sleeved black shirt, the out like of a bulletproof vest beneath, hugged their chest. Biker gloves, the same color black, covered their hands. The long pants were a light grey, but they reminded Ali more of sweat pants than anything…worth fighting in.

“ Let go of my fucking foot, you asshole!” Distracted, Ali’s grip on the stranger's foot was lost.

The next second happened in a blur. As Ali was too focused on trying to snatch back the stranger's foot- he entirely forgot about the other one. Bending down closer to the ground put Ali in the perfect position for the stranger to perform a backward kick to the head.
A powerful one, at that, that rattled his teeth.

Ali’s vision was instantly plagued with spots of shrinking and growing black dots. It felt as if a heavy weight had been left in his head. Threatening to pull him towards the ground for a unknown amount of sleep.

Ali stumbled to the side. Hands placed out in front of him to avoid crashing face-first into the wall. Trying his best to stay up, Ali quickly fumbled for the blaster at his hip- but was rudely interrupted as the stranger kicked at the back of his knee.

This indefinitely sent him down to the floor.

Fortunately, for him, he was met with a pile of dry paper.

Ha.

That moment of relief didn’t last for long though, as the stranger began to attack every part of Ali that wasn’t blocked by his arms. One after another- Ali tensed as the man apprehended him with a continuous stream of punches.
A warm liquid dripped from his hairline, and every time the stranger pulled back the sound of something wet splattering against the wall echoed in the hallway.

“ God damn! Mother fucker!” The stranger grunted. Huffing as he began to tire from his attack.

Ali let himself endure the onslaught of two more punches before using his stomach to shake the attacker off. He immediately shuffled back and released his blaster from its holster. Pointing it at the stranger, he was willing to give them a speech about just walking away but was stunned to silence as the stranger charged him in an attempt to wrestle the weapon from his hands.

They struggled in an awkward tug of war. Both gritting their teeth and slipping on the papers beneath them.

“ Let, let go! You fucking idiot!” Ali tugged the weapon towards him but was almost instantly pulled to the ground as the stranger pulled back twice as hard.

“ Nnn…No! You- you let go! Bitch!”

Ali let out a strangled huff at the retort.

“ You goddamn-“

Absently, and blinded by the moment, Ali shifted his grip at the same time the stranger gave another tug.

It was instantly, and without time to recover, that the blaster sent a scolding shot of raw energy straight through the stranger's shoulder. Leaving in its wake a splatter of blood and scarred skin.

This, fortunately….and unfortunately, is where the fighting stopped. While Ali stepped back to catch his breath, the weapon closely clutched to his chest, the stranger fell back onto his ass.

Their face twisted into a mesh of pain and anger.

“ What the fuck! Oh my god. You, you shot my fucking arm off!” They accused. Gripping at their shoulder with their opposite hand.

Ali, while still trying to take deep breaths, angrily waved his weapon at the accusation. “ No, I didn’t, asshole! You did!”

That made the stranger sputter. “ Why, why the fuck would I shoot my arm off?! Are you fucking dumb??”

Ali wiped a hand down his face. Cringing at the mess of blood and sweat that coated his palm. “ Motherfuck- you grabbed for my gun!”

The stranger looked at Ali as if he was speaking another language. “ Because you were pointing it at me! What the fuck was I supposed to do?? Let you shoot me in the fucking face??”

“ If you didn’t want to get shot in the first place you should have stayed out of my way!” Ali knew he wasn’t being fair- considering the stranger was there before him and was unaware of his presence- but that didn’t disregard the fact that his nose was possibly 100% broken.

He pointed down at them. Consciously making sure to refrain from using the hand clutching his blaster. “ You fucking psychopath! Who tackles a guy pointing a gun at them??”

The stranger threw his head back, hissing through his teeth, and kicked at the ground. “ Shut the fuck up! You were in my way! I was minding my own business, fucking dick!”

Ali, realizing that the fight was officially over, pocketed the gun. “ Oh god damn it- this, this isn’t a fucking Dr.Seuss book! We’re not the Zax!”

“…What?” The stranger squinted up at Ali in a state of hysteric pain. “ What the fuck does a children’s book author have to do with anything?”

Ali pinched at the bridge of his nose. Sighing loudly. “ Just- goddamn, your arm will be fine-“

“ Speak for yourself-“

“ Shut the fuck up! Just, Just…ice it.”

The stranger, even while preoccupied with immense pain, was aware enough to raise a sarcastic brow at Ali. “ Ice…Ice it?”

Ali shrugged. “ The cold will tighten up the skin, maybe keep your mind off the pain.”

“ My arms hanging on by a fucking thread!” The stranger nodded his head at the mess of blood and skin at his shoulder. “ And you’re telling me ice is gonna help me??”

Ali shook his head in irritation. “ I don’t, I don’t care but- but can’t someone around here sew you up?”

The stranger's face flushed red and a vein popped up on his neck. “ No!”

“ What do you mean no?? Just, Just go get your commanding officer or something- but if you speak a word to anyone that I was-“

The stranger stopped his squirming to slowly turn towards Ali. Their mouth parted open slightly. “ Oh my fucking god…you don’t work here?” He asked breathlessly.

Ali gave the man a ludicrous look. “What? Of fucking course not! Why-“ It was within his state of anger that Ali came to a…an unfortunate conclusion.

He looked down at the stranger. Scratching at his head nervously.

“ Um…Do, do you?”

The stranger threw his head back and gritted his teeth before throwing his head forward again. “ What the fuck is my day- No! I don’t fucking work here!”

Ali let his mouth drop. He gazed around the hallway with his arms outstretched before snapping back to the stranger.

“ Goddamn it! Are you kidding me?? If you don’t work here why the fuck are you here??”

“ I was trying to get their serum!” The stranger yelled back.

Ali shook his head furiously. “ No, I was trying to get their shit! And you, fucked that up.”

The stranger slowly shook his head. “ You’ve got to be kidding me…this, this is so stupid.”

Ali sighed. He squat down so that he was at eye level with the person. Hand still scratching at the back of his neck. “ You’re telling me.”

“ Yeah, yeah I am telling you! Because you shot my fucking arm!” The stranger yelled, before instantly howling in pain as his sudden moment of anger jostled his injury.
“ Mother fucker.”

Ali pouted with no real offense. “ I said I was sorry.”

The stranger squinted. “ No, you didn’t!”

“ Fine!… I’m sorry.”

The stranger rolled their eyes. “ I don’t want a damn apology, I want to know who you’re here for!”

“ The serum.”

“…I said who.”

“ Oh…I’m not telling you that.” Ali stood back up. Groaning a bit as the movement agitated his Injuries. “ That’s classified.”

The stranger seemed to stare off into space as his pain scattered brain tried its best to think.

“ Then…Then, can I get your name? At least?”

Ali pondered that for a moment and clicked his tongue. While the off chance that this person could track him down through his name was possible…it was also entirely difficult. Enough so, that Ali doubted anyone, especially this stranger, would waste their time looking for him.

He shrugged.

“ Ali’sen.”

The stranger blinked and then nodded.

“ Ali…Ali’sen…” He repeated back with a slur to his speech. “ Nice…”

Ali smiled at the stranger's loopy speech.

“ Thanks…now, what are you called?”

The stranger, again, took a long time to process the question as his shoulder continued to bleed out.

“ Um…My names, Cal…short for…for Cal…”

Ali frowned. “ Oh…okay? Cal, short for…Cal.”

Cal, staring off into space, smiled at nothing.

“ Yeah…Um, Ali’sen?”

“ You can call me Ali…considering…I fucked your shoulder.”

Cal laughed at that, but the vibration of his giggling forced him to hold back a grimace.

“ Okay, um…Ali…Can you carry me?”

Ali furrowed his brows.

“ What, what? Carry you? Man, I can’t even-“

It was in the next moment that Cal slumped over to the side and let his uninjured arm fall into his lap.

Ali stayed silent for a beat. Watching and waiting in anticipation for Cal to wake up.

When they didn’t show signs of waking up for the longest time- Ali shook his head and hid his face within his blood smelling hands.

“ This…This was not at all what I could have hoped for today…”
