History

The currency used to be whole gemstones and designed with popular gem cuts.
But when king Cronus Kingsley took the throne he redesigned the currency and made flat versions, but kept the name facets as a nod to history (note: most kingsleys are history majors in some way) he also made new designs for them which stayed the same into Wildflower Kingsley ’s rule

Each coin is made from metal with a type of gemstone embedded into it

The first design had the number of the coins worth on the front with the gemstones in the upper right corner and the significant designs on the back

The second design has the number each coin is worth on the front and the gemstone and gem cut etching into it on the back

This is the currency for my world loosely based on Australian currency, they’re called fasets (fas-ets, like facets on a gemstone). It’s not complete yet so I’m open to constructive criticism.
The symbols in the top group are how much they are worth in Motherin , my planets language.

In the bottom group each coin has a type of gem in the top right corner, this is what gives them their worth which also pays homage to when the race used entire cut gemstones as currency.

The cracked diamond represents the planets unity, so i think it works well as the planets universal currency.

Each coin is made from metal
(have yet to figure out what kind
not too fussed on being realistic for this part
want them to be blue)
in the shape of a different 2d gem cut for each one, I figured this would work well for visually impaired people as well as variety.

I made the edges thicker, so they’re sort of raised and the light blue dips in a little. The patterns inside are the different gem cuts that were used for the old gemstone currency, they are made with little grooves and filled with silver.

How do the gems stay in place?

A thing that came to mind was that the coins have a tiny locking mechanism inside that activates when the gems are put in place with an opposite pattern that locks them in. Like those satisfying videos where they put stuff together and it locks without any lines seen

They seem like they’d be uncomfortable to carry around?

In my world everyone has a special pouch made specifically for the coins, so it wouldn’t be any problem

Why is the cracked gem a symbol of unity?

you see the diamond was a green gem that The First King wore in his crown, he was the one who created the planet. When he left the planet to be ruled over by his four children, they fought over the crown and the gem broke into four pieces, over thousands of generations the four pieces of the gem was the only thing to survive everything the planet went though and became symbols of the four areas of the planet, each area having a different piece, being used in flags and such. The four original prices would be put into the crowns of each areas newest ruler. it represents unity because you can’t make up the whole diamond without all four pieces and if even one of the areas becomes divided, then it the gem stays broken.

the 0.05, 0.10 and 0.50 coins are fractions of a faset called shons, a shortened name for fractions or frakshons as my world spells it.

1 faset is 100 shons

5 shons is called 1 kwinfa (quinten/5th of a faset)
10 shons is called 1 desfa (decimal/10th of a faset)
50 shons is called 1 halfa (half of a faset)

5 shons = rose quartz
10 shons = amethyst
50 shons = opal
1 fasets = tourmaline
2 fasets = sapphire
5 fasets = ruby
10 fasets = emerald
50 fasets = alexandrite
100 fasets = diamond

Gold is worth $56 so Golium and Cleitium is $70

coins are made new because old ones get worn down after a long time and there has to be a certain number of coins circulating the economy
