Onyx Revenant

Onyx Revenants were first encountered by agents of The Ocean's Embrace after detailed reports came in speaking of a four legged creature the size of a wolf bearing scales all along its body. While the creatures did not appear to be hostile several farmers in the area did not like the idea of such a large thing as a potential danger to their flocks so they banded together and set out to kill it.

According to the official reports the farmers instead located a pack of them, and attempts to slay the creatures only angered them and caused the death of all but two who managed to escape; both say it felt as if they were 'allowed' to leave after witnessing their friends torn to shreds, as if to bear word of the creatures and warn others away from doing the same thing.

When asked why they were so difficult to kill, both men said that where their weapons struck it was as if the flesh of the bodies moved away and reformed around the blades, sucking them in as if the creatures themselves were some kind of ooze. This prompted investigators to seek out the pack to observe them and see if there was truth to the matter.

The results of the investigation were conclusive; the now named Onyx Revenants are not hostile. As long as they are left alone they do not have any desire to quarrel with humanoids or any other species, but when attacked they are quick to use their claws and fangs to rip potential enemies apart. They are fast, ferocious, and do not stop until whatever they deemed a threat is nothing but a pile of blood and viscera.

Their diet oddly seems to consist mostly of grasses, leaves, and tree barks. This lends to the theory of them being closer to oozes and slimes than mammals, as does their breeding process which appears to be that when an adult grows large enough a piece breaks off and forms into a baby that then grows over time as it consumes food.

As for what the farmers described, it does appear as if the Onyx Revenants as a whole can morph their bodies into any shape they please. Tests conducted on a captured subject (apparently near the end of its life as it was left behind by the pack and put up next to no struggle when captured) show that when attacked if they can see it coming and cannot dodge they will simply open or split their bodies to allow the attack to miss before reforming and attacking.

While they are capable of adjusting their body into any shape it appears as if for some reason they prefer a wolf-like appearance. Tests are ongoing to see if a cause can be determined, as the singular captured subject 'birthed' two more before it passed, and those two have since also multiplied. Much like their wild counterparts the Onyx Revenants born in captivity are non-hostile so long as they are not attacked, and handling from birth ensures that they are amenable to the tests that their handlers run.

This has led to the creatures being seen frequently in the desert around The Oceans Embrace as the group of the same name have now bred a small army of them. These Onyx Revenants might roam free, but they always return to the monks at the end of the day.
