info Overview
Name - What is Pestilence 's name?

Pestilence

Description - Describe Pestilence .

A virus spread by the Pestilence Enigma, it can be contracted in any way but most commonly through the inhalation of the enigma's smog.

Type of condition - What kind of condition is Pestilence ?

Neurological

Alternate names - What other names is Pestilence known by?

N/A

bubble_chart Causes
Genetic factors - What genetic factors affect how contractable or effective Pestilence is?

If one is suffering from a neurological disability or is genetically predicted to develop dementia or alzheimer's later on it life, they are more susceptible. Same goes for people who have viruses that effect their immune systems like HIV. However Enigmatics, even with these issues, have a stronger natural resistance to it, Enigmatics with neurological based Enigmas are super resistant or otherwise immune.

Environmental factors - What environmental factors affect how contractable or effective Pestilence is?

Distance from the Enigma can affect how long it takes for the virus to progress. However, once exposed, one will instantly have neurological damage inflicted that cannot be reversed. How close they are and exposure time effect the severity of this.

Lifestyle factors - What lifestyle factors affect how contractable or effective Pestilence is?

While not completely a lifestyle factor, people with backgrounds in psychology have shown slightly more resistance to it. It is believed this is due to their knowledge on psychology rather than any biological factors, though this is unconfirmed. However, the virus due to its hosts interest in individuals with medical backgrounds, it is often that psychologists are ones to get infected. As well as pediatricians, due to the Enigma's interest in children, and other doctors that practice medicine or similar fields of study. Doctors of any other field aren't sought after but of course still can get infected.

Transmission - How does Pestilence spread?

Infected individuals typically spread it through contact.
While rare, if the Enigma's host comes in contact with a body of water, there is a chance if its fresh water, not salt water, that the body of water will become infected. When ingested this water will spread the virus.
As stated before the most common version, and most effective, of transmission is through the Enigma's smog which is produced by unknown means by its host. One theory suggests its released by breathing but the amount produced does not line up with this, the most popular theory is that it somehow comes out of the host's pores. Only the Enigma's host can create this smog.

Epidemiology - How is Pestilence controlled or quarantined? How does it first occur?

The Enigmatic must be killed and burned and any infected items or biological matter dead or alive must be incinerated to prevent further spread.

local_hospital Effects
Visual effects - How does Pestilence manifest visually?

In late stages there are signs of rot in biological material. It is untested how far this will go and if it causes, or is a sign of, death.

Mental effects - How does Pestilence affect the mind?

The virus causes a decrease in cognitive abilities, motor abilities, and memory loss. The infected also doesn't seem to process pain in later stages or is unable to express it.

Symptoms - What are the symptoms of Pestilence ?

Loss in cognitive and motor abilities
Cough
Fever
Cold Sweats
Decrease in motor abilities
Biological rot

Duration - How long does Pestilence last?

Unknown

Prognosis - How deadly is Pestilence ? What is the most likely outcome for those who contract it?

It is unknown how deadly this condition is as no one has physically died from it, however, it causes any who are infected to become aggressive in later stages. Other cases victims enter a vegetative state, never to recover, and are considered brain dead.

Variations - What other forms of Pestilence are out there?

N/A

Prevention - How do people keep from contracting Pestilence ?

If exposure cannot be prevented by normal means, water filtration should remove it from any water. Hazmat suits, gas masks, and face masks (surgical or not) have shown various degrees of prevention when faced with the smog. The best form of prevention is no contact and quarantine. Hazmat suits are able to prevent the virus 99.99% of the time. Gas masks 60.89% of the time. Face masks only 50.01% of the time.
Gloves and washing hands with soap and then sanitizer have also shown slight signs of prevention.
Burning infected objects and individuals, alive or dead, have shown to eliminate any environmental factors.

Diagnostic method - How do doctors determine whether someone has Pestilence ?

Usually the smell of sulfur can indicate if the smog is nearby. If it is not, the person showing signs of brain damage, motor damage, skin rot, or memory loss could be signs of the virus. It is recommended to quarantine these individuals and provide them medication as well as a psychological evaluation to determine if infection is present. However if it too risky, immediate termination is recommended.

Treatment - What is the treatment for Pestilence ?

There is no known treatment. Some medication has shown to slow down infection, but eventually the victim will succumb. Treatment should only be applied in cases of study where it would be beneficial to keep the victim alive for a bit longer to preform tests or observations.

Medication - What medicines help treat Pestilence ?

Cold medication, antibiotics, and fish oil have been shown to slow infection.

Immunization - What immunizations are available for Pestilence ?

While not a preventative, a flu shot has been shown to slow infection. The reason why is unknown.

bar_chart Analysis
Specialty - What specialty/field is most relevant to understanding Pestilence ?

A mixture of biology and psychology.

Rarity - How rare is Pestilence ?

It depends on where the host is located. However, generally it is uncommon.

Symbolism - What does Pestilence represent in your world?

This represents the horseman of pestilence and illness as well as the embodiment of sickness both mentally and physically.

date_range History
Origin - Where did Pestilence originate?

This is believed to have been the cause of the first pandemic, according to ancient records. However this is unverified.

Evolution - How has Pestilence changed over time?

N/A
