Michelle's parents were refugees from the war in Newporte. She grew up in Amberfell, but eventually got fed up with the racism due to her Newportian background. She moved to the small town of Lake Pelouse to stay with her brother, who was campaigning with a candidate for governor. His name was Alfonse Gerard. They went for dinner a few times, then fell in love. They married three months after Alfonse took office. She had her first child, Estelle, a year after they married. When Estelle was nine, the Lakeshore province seceded from Askeria following the assassination of Askerian president Alessandra Livia. Alfonse was inducted as king of the Lakeshore, so Michelle became queen. They were happy like this for two years, until Seraphine Des-Marais was given the job of chief adviser to the king. Seraphine fabricated a scandal that involved her and Alfonse having an affair, which he forced her into. While these accusations were entirely false, Michelle believed them. She ended up divorcing Alfonse and taking custody of their children. The scandal broke her heart. While Michelle was able to raise her children in middle-class conditions, she never did take another lover.
