Ayla was born the middle child of 3 to dwarven nobility in the city of Orzammar. She never wanted the throne, that was always promised to her eldest brother when the time came, but she was always personable with her people as well knowing that they still looked to her for guidance on some matters where her brother might be too busy to help.
Then, the unthinkable happened; her youngest brother murdered the oldest and framed her for it. Her name was struck from the records and she was to be banished to the Deep Roads to walk, killing Darkspawn and other enemies of the dwarven kingdom until she died. Thankfully there was another option; Grey Wardens had come to the city, seeking answers as to why the Darkspawn were emptying the Deep Roads and flocking on the surface, looking for anything that might indicate a Blight was coming.
So Ayla hooked up with them and left the Deep Roads. From there it was simply one thing after another; the camp in the Wilds overrun with Darkspawn, a battle she barely survived. Heading into the nearby town to try and recover, and warn people to get out of the way of the incoming swarm. Trying to be a Grey Warden when she barely knew how, putting her political leadership skills to the test as she gathered allies from the Circle of Magi, Redcliffe, the Brecilian Forest, and...home, in Orzammar. Where the oldest brother was dead now too, and the youngest claimed as the only blood heir to the throne it was his while a friend of her father's fought against him saying it was too fishy that in under a year she had been exiled, the father died of an illness that popped up after she was gone, and the oldest died in an accident while helping scout the Deep Roads.
Still eventually that too was sorted out, and with allies in tow Ayla marched for Denerim, her biggest challenge. Messy political things from the Queen, her husband now dead and her father widely considered a hero for helping liberate Ferelden from Orlais years ago. She had no children and was not blood heir to the throne and it was all something Ayla had very little time to untangle as the Blight and the Archdemon marched upon the city.
The final battle against the giant, undead, possessed dragon was one the bards would sing of for centuries. And in its aftermath Ayla rebuilt the Grey Wardens in Ferelden with her own two hands...and the elf Zevran at her side. The pair had fallen in love over the course of their travels, he originally sent to kill her and failing that opting to serve her since the assassins guild he came from would kill him for his inability to take out a target. And in servitude he found love, he found freedom, and Ayla found something that had been missing most of her life.
The years wore on after the end of the Blight, and Ayla kept rebuilding because she knew her time was limited. 5 years, maybe 10 at best, and then she would walk the Deep Roads again to truly die this time around. The Taint had festered inside of her, made worse by the Blight, and there was nothing to be done.
Having a child with Zevran, a daughter named Tiamat, was the miracle she could have never hoped for. Dwarves already had lowered fertility rates due to their proximity to lyrium and it was well known that procreating between the different races was nearly impossible. Some half-elves existed, Ayla had met them in her travels, but they were mostly the product of city elves being taken advantage of so for Ayla to find herself pregnant was a cause for celebration...and caution. There was no telling how viable the child was, or if it would come out with the Taint or something worse.
But Tiamat was born, and Ayla was happy until it was time to go. She felt the Calling more and more, and feared that if she turned or lost control of herself while with the Wardens it would be too brutal. Zevran didn't deserve to have to put her down like the rabid animal she would become, and she would never rest easy if she hurt Tiamat or anyone else because of it. So the time came when Ayla returned to Orzammar with her head held high, honored as a Paragon by her people, a procession waiting as she marched towards to the doors to the Deep Roads.
Her last moments were intimate, just Zevran and Tiamat. She kissed him goodbye, held her daughter one last time knowing that the man she loved would look after her, and walked....

- Ayla's hair was originally in a ponytail, but after ARR she realized she couldn't take that anymore. She asked Fufucha to cut her hair and the other lalafell agreed; but left two strands longer, to turn into two braids. Each one has 3 beads and a feather; a bead for everyone Ayla had to leave behind that she cared for, and the feathers for herself and Fufucha.
